Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:
The primary cannabinoids,
Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta(9)-THC) and
Delta(8)-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta(8)-THC) are known to
disturb the mitochondrial function and possess antitumor
activities. These observations prompted us to investigate
their effects on the mitochondrial O(2) consumption in
human oral cancer cells (Tu183). This epithelial cell line
overexpresses bcl-2 and is highly resistant to anticancer
drugs.
EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH:
A phosphorescence analyzer that measures
the time-dependence of O(2) concentration in cellular or
mitochondrial suspensions was used for this purpose.
KEY RESULTS:
A rapid decline in the rate of respiration
was observed when Delta(9)-THC or Delta(8)-THC was added
to the cells. The inhibition was concentration-dependent,
and Delta(9)-THC was the more potent of the two compounds.
Anandamide (an endocannabinoid) was ineffective;
suggesting the effects of Delta(9)-THC and Delta(8)-THC
were not mediated by the cannabinoidreceptors. Inhibition
of O(2) consumption by cyanide confirmed the oxidations
occurred in the mitochondrial respiratory chain.
Delta(9)-THC inhibited the respiration of isolated
mitochondria from beef heart.
CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS:
These results show the cannabinoids are
potent inhibitors of Tu183 cellular respiration and are
toxic to this highly malignant tumor.

Abstract
Plant-derived cannabinoids, including
Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), induce apoptosis in
leukemic cells, although the precise mechanism remains
unclear. In the current study, we investigated the effect
of THC on the upstream and downstream events that modulate
the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) module of
mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways primarily in
human Jurkat leukemia T cells. The data showed that THC
down-regulated Raf-1/mitogen-activated protein kinase/ERK
kinase (MEK)/ERK/RSK pathway leading to translocation of
Bad to mitochondria. THC also decreased the
phosphorylation of Akt. However, no significant
association of Bad translocation with phosphatidylinositol
3-kinase/Akt and protein kinase A signaling pathways was
noted when treated cells were examined in relation to
phosphorylation status of Bad by Western blot and
localization of Bad to mitochondria by confocal analysis.
Furthermore, THC treatment decreased the Bad
phosphorylation at Ser(112) but failed to alter the level
of phospho-Bad on site Ser(136) that has been reported to
be associated with phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt
signal pathway. Jurkat cells expressing a constitutively
active MEK construct were found to be resistant to
THC-mediated apoptosis and failed to exhibit decreased
phospho-Bad on Ser(112) as well as Bad translocation to
mitochondria. Finally, use of Bad small interfering RNA
reduced the expression of Bad in Jurkat cells leading to
increased resistance to THC-mediated apoptosis. Together,
these data suggested that Raf-1/MEK/ERK/RSK-mediated Bad
translocation played a critical role in THC-induced
apoptosis in Jurkat cells.

Abstract
Excitotoxicity is a paradigm used to
explain the biochemical events in both acute neuronal
damage and in slowly progressive, neurodegenerative
diseases. Here, we show in a longitudinal magnetic
resonance imaging study that Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol
(Δ9-THC), the main active compound in marijuana, reduces
neuronal injury in neonatal rats injected intracerebrally
with the Na+/K+-ATPase inhibitor ouabain to elicit
excitotoxicity. In the acute phase Δ9-THC reduced the
volume of cytotoxic edema by 22%. After 7 d, 36% less
neuronal damage was observed in treated rats compared with
control animals. Coadministration of the CB1 cannabinoid
receptor antagonist SR141716 prevented the neuroprotective
actions of Δ9-THC, indicating that Δ9-THC afforded
protection to neurons via the CB1 receptor. In
Δ9-THC-treated rats the volume of astrogliotic tissue was
36% smaller. The CB1 receptor antagonist did not block
this effect. These results provide evidence that the
cannabinoid system can serve to protect the brain against
neurodegeneration.

Sound-shaping super-material invented
A super-material that bends, shapes and focuses sound
waves that pass through it has been invented by
scientists.
The creation pushes the boundaries of metamaterials – a
new class of finely-engineered surfaces that perform
nature-defying tasks.
These materials have already shown remarkable results with
light manipulation, allowing scientists to create a
real-life version of Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak,
for example.
But a research team from the Universities of Sussex and
Bristol have now shown that they also work with sound
waves, which could transform medical imaging and personal
audio.
Finely shaped sound fields are used in medical imaging and
therapy as well as in a wide range of consumer products
such as audio spotlights and ultrasonic haptics. The
research published today (Monday 27 February 2017) in
Nature Communications shows a simple and cheap way of
creating these shaped sound waves using acoustic
metamaterials.
The collaborative research team assembled a metamaterial
layer out of lots of small bricks that each coil up
space. The space coiling bricks act to slow down the
sound meaning that incoming sound waves can be transformed
into any required sound field.
The new metamaterial layers could be used in many
applications. Large versions could be used to direct or
focus sound to a particular location and form an audio
hotspot. Much smaller versions could be used to focus high
intensity ultrasound to destroy tumours deep within the
body. Here, a metamaterial layer could be tailor-made to
fit the body of a patient and tuned to focus the
ultrasound waves where they are needed most. In both cases
the layer could be fitted to existing loudspeaker
technology and be made rapidly and cheaply.
Dr Gianluca Memoli, from the Interact Lab at the
University of Sussex who led the study, said: “Our
metamaterial bricks can be 3D printed and then assembled
together to form any sound field you can imagine. We also
showed how this can be achieved with only a small number
of different bricks. You can think of a box of our
metamaterial bricks as a do-it-yourself acoustics kit.
Professor Sriram Subramanian, Head of the Interact Lab at
the University of Sussex, added: “We want to create
acoustic devices that manipulate sound with the same ease
and flexibility with which LCDs and projectors do to
light. Our research opens the door to new acoustic devices
combining diffraction, scattering and refraction, and
enables the future development of fully digital spatial
sound modulators, which can be controlled in real time
with minimal resources.”
Bruce Drinkwater, Professor of Ultrasonics at the
University of Bristol, explained: “In the future I think
there will be many exciting applications of this
technology. We are now working on making the metamaterial
layers dynamically reconfigurable. This will mean we can
make cheap imaging systems which could be used either for
medical diagnostics or crack detection.”

small set of pre-manufactured 3D unit cells, termed
metamaterial bricks, which can be assembled into 2D
structures on-demand. The bricks become, in isolation, the
building blocks of an assembly, encoding prerequisite
phase delays. The desired acoustic pressure field is
sampled at a certain distance from a meta-surface and used
as input for acoustic holography, leading to a phase
distribution that gets quantized in the spatial and phase
domains whose values are then mapped into a series of
pre-manufactured metamaterial bricks. We show that single
meta-surfaces can be stacked into layers to perform more
complex transformations, thus creating the acoustic
equivalent of optical components. This simple, yet

Abstract
Lasers rely on stimulated electronic transition, a quantum
phenomenon in the form of population inversion. In
contrast, phonon masers1,2,3 depend on stimulated Raman
scattering and are entirely classical. Here we extend
Raman lasers1,2,3 to rely on capillary waves, which are
unique to the liquid phase of matter and relate to the
attraction between intimate fluid particles. We fabricate
resonators that co-host capillary4 and optical modes5,
control them to operate at their non-resolved sideband and
observe stimulated capillary scattering and the coherent
excitation of capillary resonances at kilohertz rates
(which can be heard in audio files recorded by us). By
exchanging energy between electromagnetic and capillary
waves, we bridge the interfacial tension phenomena at the
liquid phase boundary to optics. This approach may impact
optofluidics by allowing optical control, interrogation
and cooling of water waves.

The beam's mathematical pattern yields wavelengths that
momentarily collapse in on themselves, briefly forming a
precise and powerful beam of sound or light waves.
"All the energy fits together in time and space so it
comes together -- BAM! -- like a crescendo," Kevin Parker,
a professor of engineering at Rochester, said in a news
release. "It can be done with an optical light wave, with
ultrasound, radar, sonar -- it will work for all of them."
Researchers say the pattern could also be used to make
precise incision and holes in nanoscale structures or etch
fine patterns into the surface of materials.
Unlike other beam patterns, which often dissipate some
energy laterally in the form of "side lobes," the new beam
patterns is extremely efficient.
"Side lobes are the enemy," said Miguel Alonso, a
professor of optics. "You want to direct all of your
ultrasound wave to the one thing you want to image, so
then, whatever is reflected back will tell you about that
one thing. If you're also getting a diffusion of waves
elsewhere, it blurs the image."
The work of Parker and Alonso -- detailed in the journal
Optics Express -- continues Rochester's tradition of
breakthrough beam discoveries. In 1986, a time of
Rochester physicists discovered a now widely used pattern
known as the Bessel beam.
"It had been decades since anyone formulated a new type of
beam," Parker said. "Then, as soon as the Bessel beam was
announced, people were thinking there may be other new
beams out there. The race was on. Finding a new beam
pattern is a like finding a new element. It doesn't happen

We study the properties of pulsed solutions to the
scalar and vector wave equations composed of plane-waves
with equal longitudinal spatial frequency. This condition
guarantees that, at all times, the field profile is
invariant in the longitudinal direction. Particular
emphasis is placed on solutions with rotational symmetry.
For these solutions, the wave concentrates strongly near
the axis at a given time. We provide closed-form
expressions for some of these fields, and show that their

this maze of obstacles created by the labyrinth structure, and
comes out on the other side.
'The labyrinth is designed carefully to create a set of bricks
that all introduce different delays.
'Then by assembling this mosaic of bricks we can shape the
sound field as desired.'
Professor Subramanian told the MailOnline that the bricks can
be made of any rigid material.
'In our case it was a polymer that is used in our 3D printer,'
he said.
'But the key is the shape of the piece.'
Large versions of the new metamaterial layers could be used to
direct or focus sound to a particular location and form an
audio hotspot, according to the experts.
Much smaller versions could be used to focus high intensity
ultrasound to destroy tumours deep within the body.
If this is realised, a metamaterial layer could be tailor-made
to fit the body of a patient and tuned to focus the ultrasound
waves where they are needed most.
In both cases the layer could be fitted to existing
loudspeaker technology and be made rapidly and cheaply.
Currently, finely shaped sound fields are used in medical
imaging and therapy as well as in a wide range of consumer
products such as audio spotlights and ultrasonic haptics.

Dr Gianluca Memoli, from the Interact Lab at the University of
Sussex led the study published in the journal Nature
Communications.
‘Our metamaterial bricks can be 3D printed and then assembled
together to form any sound field you can imagine,’ he said.
‘We also showed how this can be achieved with only a small
number of different bricks.
'You can think of a box of our metamaterial bricks as a
do-it-yourself acoustics kit.’
Professor Subramanian added: ‘We want to create acoustic
devices that manipulate sound with the same ease and
flexibility with which LCDs and projectors do to light.’

Abstract
Heating consumes large amount of energy and is a primary
source of greenhouse gas emission. Although energy-efficient
buildings are developing quickly based on improving insulation
and design, a large portion of energy continues to be wasted
on heating empty space and nonhuman objects. Here, we
demonstrate a system of personal thermal management using
metallic nanowire-embedded cloth that can reduce this waste.
The metallic nanowires form a conductive network that not only
is highly thermal insulating because it reflects human body
infrared radiation but also allows Joule heating to complement
the passive insulation. The breathability and durability of
the original cloth is not sacrificed because of the nanowires’
porous structure. This nanowire cloth can efficiently warm
human bodies and save hundreds of watts per person as compared
to traditional indoor heaters.

The invention of a Birjand University professor and researcher
was registered under the title "Polymer Nanocomposites with
Absorption Property and Simultaneous Reflection of
Electromagnetic Waves".
Omolfajr Naakhaei, who reportedly invented the nanocomposite,
told IRNA that it can absorb microwaves dangerous to humans.
The researcher suggested turning the nanocomposite into
“granules” and then using them with the polyester yarn to
produce a garment.
He said that it took him a year to produce the nanocomposite.
The inventor suggested that if the nanocomposite can be
mass-produced, it could be used in the construction industry
for additional protection.
The PhD of Solid State Physics pointed to the existence of a
few domestic products capable of shielding against
electromagnetic waves and said that most of these products use
metals such as copper or metal nanoparticles for this purpose.
However, he added, these metals have limited use due to their
high weight, high cost, low plasticity, corrosion and
reflection of the waves. His invention, on the other hand, is
low weight, has a long shelf life and can be effectively
applied against electromagnetic waves, he claims.

decontamination following the Fukushima nuclear accident:
a review

Abstract
The Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP)
accident in March 2011 resulted in the contamination of
Japanese landscapes with radioactive fallout. Accordingly, the
Japanese authorities decided to conduct extensive remediation
activities in the impacted region to allow for the relatively
rapid return of the local population. The objective of this
review is to provide an overview of the decontamination
strategies and their potential effectiveness in Japan,
focussing on particle-bound radiocesium. In the Fukushima
Prefecture, the decision was taken to decontaminate the
fallout-impacted landscapes in November 2011 for the 11
municipalities evacuated after the accident (Special
Decontamination Zone – SDZ – 1117 km2) and for the 40
non-evacuated municipalities affected by lower, although still
significant, levels of radioactivity (Intensive Contamination
Survey Areas, 7836 km2). Decontamination activities
predominantly targeted agricultural landscapes and residential
areas. No decontamination activities are currently planned for
the majority of forested areas, which cover ∼75 % of the main
fallout-impacted region. Research investigating the
effectiveness of decontamination activities underlined the
need to undertake concerted actions at the catchment scale to
avoid renewed contamination from the catchment headwaters
after the completion of remediation activities. Although the
impact of decontamination on the radioactive dose rates for
the local population remains a subject of debate in the
literature and in the local communities, outdoor workers in
the SDZ represent a group of the local population that may
exceed the long-term dosimetric target of 1 mSv yr−1.
Decontamination activities generated ∼20 million m3 of soil
waste by early 2019. The volume of waste generated by
decontamination may be decreased through incineration of
combustible material and recycling of the less contaminated
soil for civil engineering structures. However, most of this
material will have to be stored for ∼30 years at interim
facilities opened in 2017 in the vicinity of the FDNPP before
being potentially transported to final disposal sites outside
of the Fukushima Prefecture. Further research is required to
investigate the perennial contribution of radiocesium from
forest sources. In addition, the re-cultivation of farmland
after decontamination raises additional questions associated
with the fertility of remediated soils and the potential
transfer of residual radiocesium to the plants. Overall, we
believe it is important to synthesise the remediation lessons
learnt following the FDNPP nuclear accident, which could be
fundamental if a similar catastrophe occurs somewhere on Earth
in the future.

Plants emit informative airborne sounds
under stress

Abstract
Stressed plants show altered phenotypes, including changes
in color, smell, and shape. Yet, the possibility that plants
emit airborne sounds when stressed – similarly to many animals
– has not been investigated. Here we show, to our knowledge
for the first time, that stressed plants emit airborne sounds
that can be recorded remotely, both in acoustic chambers and
in greenhouses. We recorded ∼65 dBSPL ultrasonic sounds 10 cm
from tomato and tobacco plants, implying that these sounds
could be detected by some organisms from up to several meters
away. We developed machine learning models that were capable
of distinguishing between plant sounds and general noises, and
identifying the condition of the plants – dry, cut, or intact
– based solely on the emitted sounds. Our results suggest that
animals, humans, and possibly even other plants, could use
sounds emitted by a plant to gain information about the
plant’s condition. More investigation on plant bioacoustics in
general and on sound emission in plants in particular may open
new avenues for understanding plants and their interactions
with the environment, and it may also have a significant
impact on agriculture.

for about 6 months, and a series of 4 treatments was effective
for approximately 3 years. The treatments consisted of the
oral administration of ibogaine or its salts in dosage ranges
of 6 mg/kg to 19 mg/kg. The minimum effective dose was 400 mgs
and dosage increases above 1000 mgs were found to be
unnecessary. Treatments were effective in 71% of the cases.

Mosquitoes flap their wings not just to stay aloft but for
two other critical purposes: to generate sound and to point
that buzz in the direction of a potential mate, researchers at
Johns Hopkins University have discovered.
Their findings about the aerodynamics of mosquito wings could
have implications for building quieter drones and for devising
nontoxic methods to trap and exterminate the pests.
In a research paper published in Bioinspiration and
Biomimetics, a team from the university's Whiting School of
Engineering, Rajat Mittal, a mechanical engineering professor,
and Jung-Hee Seo, an associate research professor, explain the
aerodynamics and acoustics of the mosquito mating ritual
through computer modeling.
"The same wings that are producing sound are also essential
for them to fly," said Mittal, an expert in computational
fluid dynamics. "They somehow have to do both at the same
time. And they're effective at it. That's why we have so much
malaria and other mosquito borne diseases."
His team's research shows that "everything about mosquitoes
seems perfectly adapted for accomplishing this sound-based
communication."
"Thus," the paper states, "understanding the strategies and
adaptations employed by insects such as mosquitoes to control
their aeroacoustic noise could eventually provide insights
into the development of quiet drones and other bioinspired
micro-aerial vehicles."
In addition to devising quieter rotors for drones, Mittal said
the findings will likely inform research into how sound can be
used to interrupt the mating ritual. That could result in
non-toxic methods to disrupt breeding and diminish mosquito
populations.
"We continue to pursue that side of the research," he said.
"At the right frequency the mosquitoes have a hard time flying
and can't complete their mating ritual."
With a high-frequency buzzing sound, the male mosquito
attempts to connect with the low-frequency hum of a female. To
do so, the team found the mosquito must flap its long, slender
wings at high frequencies while also rotating them rapidly at
the end of each stroke.
Yes, that annoying drill-like shrill that precedes a female's
bite is also a vibrating serenade to a male mosquito's
antennae.
Unlike other flying insects their size, Mittal said mosquitoes
have adapted their anatomy and flight physiology to solve the
"complex multifactorial problem" of trying to fly and flirt at
the same time.
"The wing tones as well as the aerodynamic forces for flight
are highly directional and mosquitoes need to simultaneously
control both for the successful completion of a mate-chase,"
the paper reports.
The quick rotation of the wings "generate additional lift
force" to keep them aloft, according to the research. But this
same rotation also aids in directing the "wing tone" in a
forward direction, which is important for chasing potential
mates.

Abstract
The generation of sound from flapping (i.e. wing tones) of
mosquito (Culex) wings is investigated using computational
modeling. The flow field around the wing is simulated by
solving the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations using a
sharp-interface immersed boundary method, and the aeroacoustic
sound is predicted by the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings
equation using data from the aerodynamic simulations. In
addition to the aerodynamics, the characteristics of
mosquito's wing tone, spectral directivity patterns, and
generation mechanisms are investigated. The effects of
wing-beat frequency and stroke amplitude are also studied, and
scaling analysis for the mean lift, mechanical power, and
overall wing tone sound power are performed to understand the
effects of the wing shape and kinematics parameters. The
analysis shows that the high wing aspect-ratio, high wing beat
frequency, and small stroke amplitude adopted by mosquitoes
enable efficient generation of high-intensity wing-tones for
acoustic communications. The present findings may also apply
to the optimized noise control in the flapping-wing micro air
vehicles (FWMAV).

A cephalopod-inspired combustion

Abstract
Combustion in soft and compliant materials may enable new
methods for underwater locomotion. Inspired by the motion of
the soft bodied cephalopods, we developed a combustion-powered
hydro-jet engine (CPHJE) using an expandable silicone bladder.
The CPHJE used high energy density methane combustion to
expand a silicone bladder and accelerate water into a
hydro-jet that propelled the CPHJE. Cephalopods demonstrate
the epitome of underwater soft robot capabilities. Their use
of hydrojetting as a mode of high-speed underwater motion
resembles high-power combustion events. This paper describes a
soft combustion engine that propels a 0.7 kg body, with
hydrodynamic surfaces in the likeness of an ellipsoid shaped
squid, at instantaneous velocities of at least 0.8 m s−1 and
single-pulse average velocities of 0.1 m s−1. High-speed
videography informs a model for the CPHJE’s motion in time;
the imaging also reveals that the hydrojetting generates a
ring vortex. Tracking of this vortex results in an estimate
that the working fluid is ejected in excess of 6.7 m s−1. We
demonstrate the CPHJE motion is both repeatable and able to
produce multiple actuations with the same bladder. These
results demonstrate a new method of underwater propulsion
using combustion in soft and compliant bladders.

graduate student Chris Anderson, a co-first author on the
paper. "This is a near-universal problem for quantum
technologies."
But, by using one of the basic elements of electronics—the
diode, a one-way switch for electrons—the team discovered
another unexpected result: The quantum signal suddenly became
free of noise and was almost perfectly stable... "we found
that applying electric fields removes the electrons from the

Consumption of artificial sweetener-

Abstract
BACKGROUND:
Despite safety reports of the artificial sweetener
aspartame, health-related concerns remain.
OBJECTIVE:
We prospectively evaluated whether the consumption of
aspartame- and sugar-containing soda is associated with risk
of hematopoetic cancers.
DESIGN:
We repeatedly assessed diet in the Nurses' Health Study
(NHS) and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (HPFS). Over 22
y, we identified 1324 non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs), 285
multiple myelomas, and 339 leukemias. We calculated incidence
RRs and 95% CIs by using Cox proportional hazards models.
RESULTS:
When the 2 cohorts were combined, there was no significant
association between soda intake and risks of NHL and multiple
myeloma. However, in men, ≥1 daily serving of diet soda
increased risks of NHL (RR: 1.31; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.72) and
multiple myeloma (RR: 2.02; 95% CI: 1.20, 3.40) in comparison
with men who did not consume diet soda. We observed no
increased risks of NHL and multiple myeloma in women. We also
observed an unexpected elevated risk of NHL (RR: 1.66; 95% CI:
1.10, 2.51) with a higher consumption of regular,
sugar-sweetened soda in men but not in women. In contrast,
when sexes were analyzed separately with limited power,
neither regular nor diet soda increased risk of leukemia but
were associated with increased leukemia risk when data for men
and women were combined (RR for consumption of ≥1 serving of
diet soda/d when the 2 cohorts were pooled: 1.42; 95% CI:
1.00, 2.02).
CONCLUSION:
Although our findings preserve the possibility of a
detrimental effect of a constituent of diet soda, such as
aspartame, on select cancers, the inconsistent sex effects and
occurrence of an apparent cancer risk in individuals who
consume regular soda do not permit the ruling out of chance as
an explanation.

multipotential carcinogenic effects of aspartame

Abstract
The Cesare Maltoni Cancer Research Center of the European
Ramazzini Foundation has conducted a long-term bioassay on
aspartame (APM), a widely used artificial sweetener. APM was
administered with feed to 8-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats
(100-150/sex/group), at concentrations of 100,000, 50,000,
10,000, 2,000, 400, 80, or 0 ppm. The treatment lasted until
natural death, at which time all deceased animals underwent
complete necropsy. Histopathologic evaluation of all
pathologic lesions and of all organs and tissues collected was
routinely performed on each animal of all experimental groups.
The results of the study show for the first time that APM, in
our experimental conditions, causes a) an increased incidence
of malignant-tumor-bearing animals with a positive significant
trend in males (p < or = 0.05) and in females (p < or =
0.01), in particular those females treated at 50,000 ppm (p
< or = 0.01); b) an increase in lymphomas and leukemias
with a positive significant trend in both males (p < or =
0.05) and females (p < or = 0.01), in particular in females
treated at doses of 100,000 (p < or = 0.01), 50,000 (p <
or = 0.01), 10,000 (p < or = 0.05), 2,000 (p < or =
0.05), or 400 ppm (p < or = 0.01); c) a statistically
significant increased incidence, with a positive significant
trend (p < or = 0.01), of transitional cell carcinomas of
the renal pelvis and ureter and their precursors (dysplasias)
in females treated at 100,000 (p < or = 0.01), 50,000 (p
< or = 0.01), 10,000 (p < or = 0.01), 2,000 (p < or =
0.05), or 400 ppm (p < or = 0.05); and d) an increased
incidence of malignant schwannomas of peripheral nerves with a
positive trend (p < or = 0.05) in males. The results of
this mega-experiment indicate that APM is a multipotential
carcinogenic agent, even at a daily dose of 20 mg/kg body
weight, much less than the current acceptable daily intake. On
the basis of these results, a reevaluation of the present
guidelines on the use and consumption of APM is urgent and
cannot be delayed.

Switch To Rigid Plastic
A new material that stiffens 1,800-fold when exposed to heat
could protect motorcyclists and racecar drivers during
accidents.
The gel quickly becomes rigid and opaque when heated to 60°C,
becoming strong enough to support the 10kg weight.
Hokkaido University researchers have developed a hydrogel that
does the opposite of what polymer-based materials, like
plastic bottles, normally do: their material hardens when
heated and softens when cooled. Their findings, published in
the journal Advanced Materials, could lead to the fabrication
of protective clothing items for traffic and sportsrelated
accidents.
Takayuki Nonoyama and Jian Ping Gong of Hokkaido University
and their colleagues were inspired by how proteins remain
stable inside organisms that survive within extreme-heat
environments, like hot springs and deep sea thermal vents.
Normally, heat “denatures” proteins, altering their structure
and breaking their bonds. But the proteins within thermophiles
remain stable with heat thanks to enhanced electrostatic
interactions such as ionic bonds.
The team developed an inexpensive, non-toxic polyacrylic gel
based on this concept. A polyelectrolyte poly (acrylic acid)
(PAAc) was immersed in a calcium acetate aqueous solution.
PAAc on its own acts like any other polymer-based material and
softens when heated. But when calcium acetate is added, PAAc’s
side residues interact with the calcium acetate molecules, in
a way similar to what happens inside thermophile proteins,
causing PAAc to act very differently.
The team found that their originally uniform gel separates
into a polymer dense “phase” and a polymer sparse one as the
temperature rises. When it reaches to a critical temperature,
in this case around 60°C, the dense phase undergoes
significant dehydration which strengthens ionic bonds and
hydrophobic interactions between polymer molecules. This
causes the material to rapidly transform from a soft,
transparent hydrogel to a rigid, opaque plastic.
The heated material was 1,800 times stiffer, 80 times
stronger, and 20 times tougher than the original hydrogel. The
soft-to-rigid switching was completely reversible by
alternatively heating and cooling the material. Moreover, the
scientists could fine-tune the switching temperature by
adjusting the concentration of the ingredients.
They then demonstrated a possible application of the material
by combining it with a woven glass fabric. This new fabric was
soft at room temperature, but when it was pulled against an
asphalt surface for five seconds at a speed of 80 km/hour, the
heat generated by the friction hardened the material with only
minor abrasions forming on the contact surface.
Takayuki Nonoyama says “Clothing made from similar fabric
could be used to protect people during traffic or
sports-related accidents, for example. Our material could also
be used as a heat-absorbent window coating to keep indoor
environments cooler.”
“This polymer gel can be easily made from versatile,
inexpensive and non-toxic raw materials that are commonly
found in daily life. Specifically, the polyacrylic acids are
used in disposable diapers and calcium acetates are used in
food additives,” Jian Ping Gong added. “Our study contributes
to basic research on new temperature-responsive polymers, and
to applied research on temperature-responsive smart
materials.”

TEMPERATURE-RESPONSIVE GEL HAVING LCST WITH NO VOLUME
PHASE TRANSITION, AND PRODUCTION METHOD THEREFOR
The present invention relates to a temperature-responsive
hydrogel which contains a carboxylated polymer and a
divalent-metal salt of an organic acid. The carboxylated
polymer is, for example, a homopolymer of a carboxylated
monomer or a copolymer of a plurality of monomers including
said monomer. The present invention further relates to a
method for producing the temperature-responsive hydrogel, the
method including immersing a carboxylated polymer in an
aqueous solution of a divalent-metal salt of an organic acid.
The concentration of the divalent-metal salt of an organic
acid in the aqueous solution is, for example, from 50 mM to
the saturation concentration. According to the present
invention, it is possible to provide: a temperature-responsive
gel having an LCST with no volume phase transition; and a
method for producing the temperature-responsive gel.

Polyelectrolytes induce water-water
correlations that result in dramatic viscosity changes and
nuclear quantum effects

Abstract
Ions interact with water via short-ranged ion-dipole
interactions. Recently, an additional unexpected long-ranged
interaction was found: The total electric field of ions
influences water-water correlations over tens of hydration
shells, leading to the Jones Ray effect, a 0.3% surface
tension depression. Here, we report such long-range
interactions contributing substantially to both molecular and
macroscopic properties. Femtosecond elastic second harmonic
scattering (fs-ESHS) shows that long-range electrostatic
interactions are remarkably strong in aqueous polyelectrolyte
solutions, leading to an increase in water-water correlations.
This increase plays a role in the reduced viscosity, which
changes more than two orders of magnitude with polyelectrolyte
concentration. Using D2O instead of H2O shifts both the
fs-ESHS and the viscosity curve by a factor of ~10 and reduces
the maximum viscosity value by 20 to 300%, depending on the
polyelectrolyte. These phenomena cannot be explained using a
mean-field approximation of the solvent and point to nuclear
quantum effects.

Abstract
No effective, reliable treatment for stomatitis associated
with cancer therapy has been established. This study focused
on the its effectiveness of ozone nano-bubble water (ONBW) for
the treatment of chemotherapy-induced stomatitis. Oral
mucositis was induced in 14-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats
(N = 21). The animals were randomly divided into 3 groups: 7
without treatment (control); 7 treated with physiological salt
solution (saline); and 7 treated with ONBW. Animals were
weighed on Days 7, 9, 11, and 16. Stomatitis grade evaluation
and bacterial count measurements were performed before rinsing
in all animals 3, 5, and 10 days after acetic acid irritation
(Days 9, 11, and 17 respectively). Weight loss after
stomatitis creation was observed in all groups, with
significant differences between the control and ONBW groups
and between the saline and ONBW groups on Day 16. The
stomatitis grade did not worsen during the experimental period
in any group, with the lowest grades in the ONBW group on Days
11 and 16. Significant differences were identified between the
control and ONBW groups and between the saline and ONBW groups
on Days 11 and 16. Oral bacterial counts tended to decrease
over time in all three groups, with the greatest decrease in
the ONBW group, followed by the saline group. The decrease in
the bacterial count was steepest in the ONBW group. Rinsing
out the oral cavity with ONBW decreased bacterial counts and
encouraged the healing of oral chemotherapy-induced
stomatitis. ONBW may be an effective treatment for
chemotherapy-induced stomatitis...
5. Conclusions
The efficacy of ONBW for treating chemotherapy-induced
stomatitis was investigated in a rat model. ONBW caused no
biological harm and showed a strong antibacterial effect.
Rinsing out the oral cavity with ONBW decreased bacterial
counts and encouraged the healing of oral chemotherapy-induced
stomatitis.
The present results suggest that ONBW may be an effective
treatment for chemotherapy-induced stomatitis in the future.

The first-ever, peer-review study has been published comparing
total-health in vaccinated and unvaccinated children. Dr.
Anthony Mawson led a research team that investigated the
relationship between vaccination exposures and acute or
chronic illnesses in home-schooled children. The vaccinated
children had a much higher rate of autism and ADHD, at a rate
of 470% higher than those who received no shots.
Vaccinated children were also more vulnerable to allergies and
eczema. Unvaccinated children contract mild childhood diseases
more frequently, but their vaccinated counterparts suffer
pneumonia and ear infections more frequently. The finding that
vaccination introduces a significant risk for autism is

Aging is a predominant risk factor for several chronic
diseases that limit healthspan1. Mechanisms of aging are thus
increasingly recognized as potential therapeutic targets.
Blood from young mice reverses aspects of aging and disease
across multiple tissues2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, which supports a
hypothesis that age-related molecular changes in blood could
provide new insights into age-related disease biology. We
measured 2,925 plasma proteins from 4,263 young adults to
nonagenarians (18–95 years old) and developed a new
bioinformatics approach that uncovered marked non-linear
alterations in the human plasma proteome with age. Waves of
changes in the proteome in the fourth, seventh and eighth
decades of life reflected distinct biological pathways and
revealed differential associations with the genome and
proteome of age-related diseases and phenotypic traits. This
new approach to the study of aging led to the identification
of unexpected signatures and pathways that might offer
potential targets for age-related diseases.

A specialized silk covering could protect seeds from salinity
while also providing fertilizer-generating microbes.
Providing seeds with a protective coating that also supplies
essential nutrients to the germinating plant could make it
possible to grow crops in otherwise unproductive soils,
according to new research at MIT.
Researchers have used silk derived from ordinary silkworm
cocoons, like those seen here, mixed with bacteria and
nutrients, to make a coating for seeds that can help them
germinate and grow even in salty soil.
A team of engineers has coated seeds with silk that has been
treated with a kind of bacteria that naturally produce a
nitrogen fertilizer, to help the germinating plants develop.
Tests have shown that these seeds can grow successfully in
soils that are too salty to allow untreated seeds to develop
normally. The researchers hope this process, which can be
applied inexpensively and without the need for specialized
equipment, could open up areas of land to farming that are now
considered unsuitable for agriculture.
The findings are being published this week in the journal
PNAS, in a paper by graduate students Augustine
Zvinavashe and Hui Sun, postdoc Eugen Lim, and professor
of civil and environmental engineering Benedetto Marelli.
The work grew out of Marelli’s previous research on using silk
coatings as a way to extend the shelf life of seeds used as
food crops. “When I was doing some research on that, I
stumbled on biofertilizers that can be used to increase the
amount of nutrients in the soil,” he says. These fertilizers
use microbes that live symbiotically with certain plants and
convert nitrogen from the air into a form that can be readily
taken up by the plants.
Not only does this provide a natural fertilizer to the plant
crops, but it avoids problems associated with other
fertilizing approaches, he says: “One of the big problems with
nitrogen fertilizers is they have a big environmental impact,
because they are very energetically demanding to produce.”
These artificial fertilizers may also have a negative impact
on soil quality, according to Marelli.
Although these nitrogen-fixing bacteria occur naturally in
soils around the world, with different local varieties found
in different regions, they are very hard to preserve outside
of their natural soil environment. But silk can preserve
biological material, so Marelli and his team decided to try it
out on these nitrogen-fixing bacteria, known as rhizobacteria.
“We came up with the idea to use them in our seed coating, and
once the seed was in the soil, they would resuscitate,” he
says. Preliminary tests did not turn out well, however; the
bacteria weren’t preserved as well as expected.
That’s when Zvinavashe came up with the idea of adding a
particular nutrient to the mix, a kind of sugar known as
trehalose, which some organisms use to survive under low-water
conditions. The silk, bacteria, and trehalose were all
suspended in water, and the researchers simply soaked the
seeds in the solution for a few seconds to produce an even
coating. Then the seeds were tested at both MIT and a research
facility operated by the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in
Ben Guerir, Morocco. “It showed the technique works very
well,” Zvinavashe says.
The resulting plants, helped by ongoing fertilizer production
by the bacteria, developed in better health than those from
untreated seeds and grew successfully in soil from fields that
are presently not productive for agriculture, Marelli says.
In practice, such coatings could be applied to the seeds by
either dipping or spray coating, the researchers say. Either
process can be done at ordinary ambient temperature and
pressure. “The process is fast, easy, and it might be
scalable” to allow for larger farms and unskilled growers to
make use of it, Zvinavashe says. “The seeds can be simply
dip-coated for a few seconds,” producing a coating that is
just a few micrometers thick.
The ordinary silk they use “is water soluble, so as soon as
it’s exposed to the soil, the bacteria are released,” Marelli
says. But the coating nevertheless provides enough protection
and nutrients to allow the seeds to germinate in soil with a
salinity level that would ordinarily prevent their normal
growth. “We do see plants that grow in soil where otherwise
nothing grows,” he says.
These rhizobacteria normally provide fertilizer to legume
crops such as common beans and chickpeas, and those have been
the focus of the research so far, but it may be possible to
adapt them to work with other kinds of crops as well, and that
is part of the team’s ongoing research. “There is a big push
to extend the use of rhizobacteria to nonlegume crops,” he
says. One way to accomplish that might be to modify the DNA of
the bacteria, plants, or both, he says, but that may not be
necessary.
“Our approach is almost agnostic to the kind of plant and
bacteria,” he says, and it may be feasible “to stabilize,
encapsulate and deliver [the bacteria] to the soil, so it
becomes more benign for germination” of other kinds of plants
as well.
Even if limited to legume crops, the method could still make a
significant difference to regions with large areas of saline
soil. “Based on the excitement we saw with our collaboration
in Morocco,” Marelli says, “this could be very impactful.”
As a next step, the researchers are working on developing new
coatings that could not only protect seeds from saline soil,
but also make them more resistant to drought, using coatings
that absorb water from the soil. Meanwhile, next year they
will begin test plantings out in open experimental fields in
Morocco; their previous plantings have been done indoors under
more controlled conditions.

Significance
In a world that strives to accommodate population growth
and climate pattern changes, there is a compelling need to
develop new technologies to enhance agricultural output while
minimizing inputs and mitigating their effects on the
environment. In this study, we describe a biomaterial-based
approach to engineer the microenvironment of seeds through the
preservation and delivery of plant growth promoting
rhizobacteria (PGPRs) that are able to fix nitrogen and
mitigate soil salinity. PGPRs are encapsulated in
silk–trehalose (ST) coatings that achieve bacterial
preservation and delivery upon sowing. The biomaterial choice
is inspired by a recent finding that a combination of proteins
and disaccharides is key for anhydrobiosis. This simple

Abstract
Human population growth, soil degradation, and
agrochemical misuse are significant challenges that
agriculture must face in the upcoming decades as it pertains
to global food production. Seed enhancement technologies will
play a pivotal role in supporting food security by enabling
germination of seeds in degraded environments, reducing seed
germination time, and boosting crop yields. So far, a great
effort has been pursued in designing plants that can adapt to
different environments and germinate in the presence of
abiotic stressors, such as soil salinity, heat, and drought.
The technology proposed here seeks a different goal: To
engineer the microenvironment of seeds by encapsulation,
preservation, and precise delivery of biofertilizers that can
boost seed germination and mitigate abiotic stressors. In
particular, we developed a biomaterial based on silk fibroin
(S) and trehalose that can be mixed with rhizobacteria and
applied on the surface of seeds, retrofitting currently used
techniques for seed coating, i.e., dip coating or spray
drying. A micrometer thick transparent robust coating is
formed by material assembly. The combination of a polymorphic
protein as S and of a disaccharide used by living systems to
tolerate abiotic stressors provides a beneficial environment
for the survival of nonspore forming rhizobacteria outside the
soil and in anhydrous conditions. Using Rhizobium tropici CIAT
899 and Phaseolus vulgaris as working models, we demonstrated
that rhizobacteria delivered in the soil after coating
dissolution infect seedlings’ roots, form root nodules,
enhance yield, boost germination, and mitigate soil
salinity...
Conclusion
To summarize, we developed a biomaterial formulation
capable of precisely coating seeds with biofertilizers and
releasing them in the soil to boost seed germination and
mitigate soil salinity. The bioinspired approach that we
describe combines a disaccharide well known for its key role
in anhydrobiosis with a structural protein that imparts
mechanical robustness, ease of fabrication, adhesiveness,
conformability, and controlled biodegradation. The rhizobium
strain used in this paper survived encapsulation in the
biomaterial coating, was preserved over time, and was
successfully released in the soil to form symbiotic nodules
with the host roots. ST-coated seeds yielded plants that grew
faster and stronger in the presence of saline soil. More
broadly, our study opens the door to the application of
advanced materials to precision agriculture, introducing
concepts that are germane to drug delivery and biomaterials
design to a field that needs to implement innovative
technologies to enhance food production while minimizing
inputs and mitigating environmental impacts. Using this
approach, it is now possible to define applications where
biomaterials can be used to engineer the seed microenvironment
to precisely deliver nutrients, hormones, and beneficial
biomolecules to seedlings, paving the way for a more
sustainable and effective delivery of fertilizers and

'gender bending' chemicals than first thought
Humans are exposed to far more hormone-disrupting chemicals
than previously thought, according to a new study.
Patricia Hunt, the researcher at Washington State University
who first discovered that BPA, a dangerous toxin in plastics,
can cause cancer and other diseases and disorders, has now
developed a more accurate method of measuring it.
In a study published today, Dr Hunt reveals the new tool shows
the 'safe' limit of BPA stipulated by the US Food and Drug
Administration is flawed.
In fact, it is 44 times higher than what Dr Hunt considers
safe.
This study raises serious concerns about whether we've been
careful enough about the safety of this chemical,' Dr Hunt, a
corresponding author on the paper, said.
'What it comes down to is that the conclusions federal
agencies have come to about how to regulate BPA may have been
based on inaccurate measurements.'
The amount of BPA the FDA considers acceptable varies based on
the product.
Broadly, it claims that the chemicals are 'safe' and that
people are exposed to such low doses of them that they're not
considered toxic.
However, in 2012, it amended its regulations and banned the
use of BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups.
Methodology used by the FDA to establish what is or isn't
'safe' has been subject to scrutiny from a number of
scientists. Dr Hunt has led that charge.
She discovered the way that the BPAs - sometimes referred to
as 'gender-bending chemicals - interfered with the production
of sperm, eggs, and male and female chromosomes.
Dr Hunt has long acknowledged that measuring humans' exposure
to BPAs is difficult - but argues that that is all the more
reason to air on the side of caution.
So, in her latest work, she developed a new way to test just
how much BPA people are exposed to and internalizing.
According to Dr Hunt and her colleagues, most studies
attempting to measure the amount of BPA in human urine have
done so by putting BPA metabolites - compounds generated as
the chemicals pass through the body - into a snail-based
enzyme solution that is supposed to turn the compounds back to
BPA itself.
This is an 'indirect' measure, according to the study,
published in the journal, The Lancet Diabetes and
Endocrinology.
Instead, she and her team devised a way to assess the
metabolites themselves - directly.
What they found was alarming.
Not only was the disparity between the indirect measure and
their 'direct' on as wide as 44-fold, the higher the level of
BPA, the greater the gulf between their measure and the one
used by the FDA was.
'I hope this study will bring attention to the methodology
used to measure BPA, and that other experts and labs will take
a closer look at and assess independently what is happening,'
said the study's first author, Roy Gerona.

examination of influenza vaccine policies shows that although

underlying the policy are often of low quality, and do not

of influenza appears overstated.

...Rudolf Breuss was a healer from Austria, an educated man
who had an incredible understanding of, and love for, his
fellow human beings. Born in 1899, he turned his attention to
finding an alternative and more gentle treatment for cancer
and other diseases than that offered by conventional medicine.
It was a simple German book written over 300 years previously
that expounded the value and use of fruit and vegetable juices
which was to capture his attention and direct his work for the
rest of his life.
Cancer Theory of Rudolf Breuss
Breuss maintained that cancer, whenever it occurs in the
body, feeds and grows from protein. He therefore deduced that
if one fasted for what has now been confirmed as an ideal
period of 42 days, during which various herbal teas and juices
are taken to detoxify, cleanse and eliminate, the cancer would
starve, be absorbed and subsequently pass out of the body one
way or another. Radical thinking that flew in the face of the
accepted medical wisdom, but is now used all over the world
and known as the Breuss Total Cancer Treatment.
Raw fruit and vegetable juices have always been used and
recommended in natural medicine as part of the healing system
for many ailments and chronic complaints. Raw juices contain
antioxidants and living enzymes that science has identified as
an imperative part of everyone’s diet if they wish to stay
healthy and maintain a defense against all the toxins of
today’s environment.
It is against this backdrop that Rudolf Breuss developed his
Total Cancer Treatment, utilising the therapeutic properties
of vegetable juices and herbal teas that have been implicated
in the cure of many types of cancer.
The Breuss Tea mix and a specific mixture of organically grown
carrot, beetroot, celery, Chinese radish and potato worked
wonders on his patients. His mixture provided, in liquid form,
all of the minerals and vitamins required by the body during
the 42 day fast, whilst the body’s own resources are used in
dealing with the diseased tissue. Testimonial after

The same blend of the Breuss Vegetable Juice is used in all

acquitted when his defense lawyer, a cancer sufferer cured by
Breuss, presented an entourage of cured patients who all
attested to the success of his Total Cancer Treatment. The
Austrian President, Rudolf Kirchschlaeger, even intervened on
his behalf!
It is easy to see why Hilde Hemmes was so inspired when she
heard his story. “Rudolf Breuss was a shining example of what
a natural healer should be and he has been an inspiration to
me. I have tried his six day vegetable and herbal tea
cleansing diet and recommend that everyone should give their
bodies a rest every six months. I felt absolutely fantastic
and re-energised” said Hilde, who often works 14 hours a day.

Breuss allotted three teas for all types of cancers: sage tea,
kidney tea and cranesbill tea. Sage tea includes sage (Salvia
officinalis), St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum),
peppermint (Mentha piperata) and balm (Melissa officinalis) in
a special ratio. It could be taken when desired. Kidney tea
includes horsetail (Equisetum arvense), stinging nettle
(Urtica dioica), knotgrass (Polygonum aviculare) and St.
John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum), in a special ratio and
must be taken only for the first three weeks. Cranesbill tea
includes red cranesbill (Geranium robertianum) and only one
half cup of cold tea should be ingested per day. For special
types of cancer, additional teas are recommended. All teas
have to be taken without sugar.
For leukemia, Breuss stated that the patient had to drink the
teas and juices but could eat everything except for meat soup,
beef, pork and reheated food (ref 1-3) (the English
translation mentions beef soup, pork, chemical food additives,
burnt food and fats (ref 2)).
Breuss further stipulated that patients can not start the
Breuss Cancer Cure immediately after surgery, but have to wait
at least two to five months. No concurrent treatments are
allowed during the treatment. He recommended fresh air and
exercise and that smoking should be stopped. Furthermore, the
patient must not sleep above so-called “water veins” (sources
of ground radiation) and should avoid moth powder,
insecticides, sprays or air fresheners in the house. Breuss
claimed that patients who had completed the Breuss Cancer Cure
should never again eat reheated food but should be allowed to
gradually start eating salt-reduced, light food and to drink
approximately 60 ml of the vegetable juice per day for a
further two to four weeks.
Additional instructions were added in 1987 (ref 1, 2):
patients should take one or two bowls of onion broth a day
(only the liquid). To support the heart, patients should take
20 to 40 drops of hawthorn tincture (Crataegus oxyacantha).
People with diabetes should continue insulin treatment.
Additional instructions were added in 1990 (ref 1): for
substitution of calcium and potassium, patients should drink a
tea made from plantain lance (Plantago lanceolata),
broad-leaved plantain (Plantago major), Iceland moss (Cetraria
islandica), lungwort (Pulmonaria officinalis), ground ivy
(Glechoma hederacea), mullein (Verbascum thapsus) and Meum
mutellina herb (Ligusticum mutellina). Patients with liver or
gall bladder problems should drink a broth of bean pods
instead of onion broth.
Breuss Cancer Cure Claims of Efficacy
Breuss claimed, that since 1950 he has treated more than
2,000 patients successfully. He estimates that since 1986, a
further 40,000 patients with cancer and other “incurably sick
persons” have been healed through his methods. As proof he
cited testimonials and letters of thanks from the years 1971
to 1985 (ref 1-3) . Breuss claimed that treatment failures
could only occur if his instructions were not followed
strictly (ref 1-3) . He believed that about one million people
could be healed, “if the so-called cancer research and the
orthodox medicine would be with me instead against me” (ref

One of my readers, ‘Aniscadore’, has asked me about the
pertinence of a treatment based on vegetable juices, along the
lines of the "Breuss Cure". Breuss was an Austrian healer,
born at the end of the 19th century. This is an opportunity to
return to the subject of the possible benefits and certain
dangers of restrictive diets, which should be managed with
great care.
In rodents, severe caloric restriction has been shown to slow
the progression of some cancers. In France, researchers at the
University of Rennes have demonstrated that the elimination of
some amino-acids (precursors of molecules called polyamines)
slows the progression of certain cancers in humans, and
contributes to reducing cancer-related pain.
However, BE CAREFUL. This kind of super-restrictive diet is
not for everyone. Although it may have some beneficial effect,
it can also be dangerous. The “Breuss Cancer Cure” has not
been evaluated in any kind of systematic way in human beings,
and personally I feel that it should only be followed under
the supervision of a specialized nutritionist who is working
closely with the patient’s cancer specialist. I recommend that
if they want to try this diet, patients should restrict it to
a period of two to four weeks, during which they can consume
prepared fluids that contain carefully measured amounts of the
essential nutritional elements while eliminating polyamine
precursors. Then they can embark on a diet that reduces these
same precursors as much as possible.
In Germany, a clinic on Lake Constance is specialized in
therapeutic diet restriction and in this type of nutritional
and medical treatment of cancer: the Klinik Buchinger am
Bodensee. (The therapists there speak English and French as
well as German). There may well be other establishments of
this kind in the United States and the UK, but I am not aware
of them. Perhaps someone could help identify clinics of this

"Europe can only be saved if it 'returns to the source of its
real values: its Christian identity', Prime Minister Viktor
Orban said on Tuesday at the opening of an international
conference on persecuted Christians," The Hungary Journal
reports.

"Those we are helping now can give us the
greatest help in saving Europe," the prime minister said in
his speech. "We are giving persecuted Christians what they
need: homes, hospitals, and schools, and we receive in return
what Europe needs most: a Christian faith, love and
perseverance."
"The Hungarian people and their government
believe that Christian virtues provide peace and happiness to
those who practise them," Orban said, noting that protecting
Hungary's constitutional identity and Christian culture was an
obligation for each state agency under Hungary's fundamental
law. "This legacy obliges us to protect Christian communities
persecuted across the world as far as we are able," he said.
Orban noted that the first Hungarian tribes
arrived in the Carpathian Basin 1,100 years ago but many other
groups had come and gone before them. "To this day Hungarians
are curious as to why we were the ones to survive," the prime
minister said. "According to the most widely accepted answer,
our military capabilities and vigour would not have been
enough, so the key to our survival was our conversion to
Christianity."
"There are some who see this as primarily a
diplomatic feat or one of state organisation, and it was
exactly those things, but first and foremost it was a
spiritual rebirth and a real conversion," Orban said.
"The Hungarian people and their government
believe that Christianity can help peoples and nations
survive, just as it had happened with us," he added. "Our
first Christian king was more than just a remarkable ruler,"
Orban said, adding that King St. Stephen had been a visionary
who had given Hungarians guidance and a "spiritual and
political compass".
The prime minister said Hungary was right
to stand up for Christianity, arguing that "goodness inspires
goodness" and Hungarians' commitment to helping persecuted
Christians "breeds courage". "Our example can have a far
reach," he said. "Actions can free those who are crippled and
restore faith in personal action."
Orban said the question may arise whether
there was already enough to be done about anti-Christian
sentiment in Europe and if there was even a need to provide
help to other continents. "The troubles of Christianity in
Europe and the persecution of Christians in other places
cannot be separated from one another," he argued.
"Europe is quiet," Orban said. "A
mysterious force shuts the mouths of European politicians and
cripples their arms." He said the issue of Christian
persecution could only be considered a human rights issue in
Europe, insisting that "Christians are not allowed to be
mentioned on their own, only together with other groups that
are being persecuted for their faiths." The persecution of
Christians "is therefore folded into the diverse family of
persecuted religious groups", he added.
The prime minister said that while
religious persecution should not be underestimated, those who
treated the persecution of Christians solely as a humanitarian
problem failed to mention the most important thing. "It's not
just the people and the communities but also the culture as a
whole that is being subjected to an organised and
comprehensive attack," he said. "Even in the land of our
culture, our civilisation, the most successful Christian
civilisation to date: Europe." He said this attack was being
carried out through "the replacement of the population,
immigration, stigmatisation, insults and the muzzle of
political correctness".
Orban said there were many "good and true
Christian politicians" in Europe today but they were stymied
from openly stating their views due to a mix of constant
coalition negotiations and succumbing to the power relations
of Europe's media. Hungary, he said, was blessed with
political stability, a public against migration, and a
majority that demanded the protection of Christian culture. He
said Hungarian politics started from the position that "we
Christians have the right to protect our culture and way of
life".
Orban said that unlike many politicians
elsewhere in Europe, "we believe people should be encouraged
to live and thrive where their ancestors have lived for
centuries. So the Hungary Helps scheme is about rebuilding
schools, hospitals and dwellings in troubled parts of the
world and providing young people with an education at
Hungarian universities", he said.
He said Europeans were wrong to think that
the persecution of Christians could never take place in their
own country. He said that even though Europe had suffered at
the hands of terrorists several times, "many Islamic State
soldiers" had come from western European countries while
"Islamic masses" had migrated to Europe illegally and
unchecked. Demographic forecasts indicate that the religious
and cultural proportions in some European countries will
change rapidly, he said, adding that Europe could only be
"saved" by re-establishing its Christian identity.

The Hungarian Prime Minister argued that
Christian persecution is not only an attack on people but on

persecution is sometimes violent but sometimes more subtle,
including "population exchange through mass migration,
stigmatization, mockery, and the muzzle of political
correctness."
Orbán said also that Western Europe's
indiscriminate acceptance of mass migration is a "time bomb"
for the future.
"Western Europe has already provided dozens
of militants to the Islamic State, and uncontrolled
immigration has produced a radical change in the demographics
of the population," he said.
The Prime Minister said that the only
solution is for Europe to discover its Christian roots and
reaffirm its Christian identity.
President Donald Trump of the United States
sent a letter to the Conference saying that he is "gratified"
that Hungary shares his country's dedication to religious
liberty. The cordial message was read aloud by his domestic
policy advisor Joe Grogan.
"The United States has always vehemently
defended the unalienable right to live and worship freely
according to one's conscience and beliefs," Trump wrote.
"I am gratified that Hungary's State
Secretariat for the Aid of Persecuted Christians and the
Hungary Helps Program share America's conviction in defending
and advancing religious liberty, and I thank them for
convening this gathering," he continued.
"This conference is an important reminder
that we all have a responsibility to safeguard this sacred
fundamental right."
Christians are the most persecuted group in the world.

Abstract
Aging is a major risk factor for the majority of human
diseases, and the development of interventions to reduce the
intrinsic rate of aging is expected to reduce the risk for
age-related diseases including cardiovascular disease, cancer,
and dementia. In the skin, aging manifests itself in
photodamage and dermal atrophy, with underlying tissue
reduction and impaired barrier function. To determine whether
rapamycin, an FDA-approved drug targeting the mechanistic
target of rapamycin (mTOR) complex, can reduce senescence and
markers of aging in human skin, an exploratory,
placebo-controlled, interventional trial was conducted in a
clinical dermatology setting. Participants were greater than
40 years of age with evidence of age-related photoaging and
dermal volume loss and no major morbidities. Thirty-six
participants were enrolled in the study, and nineteen
discontinued or were lost to follow-up. A significant (P =
0.008) reduction in p16INK4A protein levels and an increase in
collagen VII protein levels (P = 0.0077) were observed among
participants at the end of the study. Clinical improvement in
skin appearance was noted in multiple participants, and
immunohistochemical analysis revealed improvement in
histological appearance of skin tissue. Topical rapamycin
reduced the expression of the p16INK4A protein consistent with
a reduction in cellular senescence. This change was
accompanied by relative improvement in clinical appearance of
the skin and histological markers of aging and by an increase
in collagen VII, which is critical to the integrity of the
basement membrane. These results indicate that rapamycin
treatment is a potential anti-aging therapy with efficacy in
humans.

A large fraction of the world’s population still lacks
access to electricity, particularly at night when photovoltaic
systems no longer operate. The ability to generate electricity
at night could be a fundamentally enabling capability for a
wide range of applications, including lighting and low-power
sensors. Here, we demonstrate a low-cost strategy to harness
the cold of space through radiative cooling to generate
electricity with an off-the-shelf thermoelectric generator.
Unlike traditional thermoelectric generators, our device
couples the cold side of the thermoelectric module to a
sky-facing surface that radiates heat to the cold of space and
has its warm side heated by the surrounding air, enabling
electricity generation at night. We experimentally demonstrate
25 mW/m 2 of power generation and validate a model that
accurately captures the device’s performance. Further, we show

Fraunhofer researchers develop
technique to produce aluminum windings for motors
Researchers at Fraunhofer IFAM have developed a casting
technique that can be used to produce lightweight aluminum
windings with a higher groove fill factor to replace copper
windings in electric motors. In one study, they found that the
aluminum coils increase the continuous output of the
electrical machines compared to the copper windings, reduce
the operating temperature and at the same time save weight and
raw material costs.
After having already successfully made aluminum coils in
precision casting in recent years, it was an obvious goal for
the department Foundry Technology and Lightweight Construction
at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and
Applied Materials IFAM also to produce the coils for series
production in die casting.
Cast coils are characterized by a flat conductor arrangement,
which leads to a higher slot fill factor and thus to a better
utilization of the available installation space.
Although the cast aluminum coils have a higher electrical
resistance relative to the wound copper coils, the larger
cross-section results in less resistance with respect to the
entire coil.
Due to the better connection to the laminated core and more
favorable utilization of the installation space results in a
much better thermal and electromagnetic behavior. For this
reason, it is possible to replace wound copper coils with cast
aluminum coils for improved performance and lower material
costs.
To show this in a direct comparison, the Fraunhofer team used
250W commercial pedelec motors. Rebuilt engines with different
laminated cores and coil combinations were tested on a bench.
Among the results with the aluminum windings:
The groove fill factor could be increased
from 32 to 60%.
At the same time, there was a weight saving
of 10%.
Torque increased by 30%.
Due to the better thermal behavior of the
coils, the continuous power at operating temperature increased
by almost 20%.
The aluminum coil can deliver the resulting heat better to the
laminated core and thus to the environment. This results in an
improved continuous performance, since the coils only reach
the permissible continuous operating temperature at higher
currents.
Even more advantageous were the measurement results for a
laminated core optimized on the cast coils in another modified
pedelec motor. At lower weight, the torque increased by almost
80% and the continuous power by 25% compared to the original
engine. Design changes can further increase the performance of
aluminum coil motors.

For this study, researchers prospectively analyzed data from
the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals
Follow-Up Study for a 22-year period. A total of 77,218 women
and 47,810 men were included in the analysis, for a total of
2,278,396 person-years of data. Apart from sheer size, what
makes this study superior to other past studies is the
thoroughness with which aspartame intake was assessed.
Every two years, participants were given a detailed dietary
questionnaire, and their diets were reassessed every four
years. Previous studies which found no link to cancer only
ever assessed participants’ aspartame intake at one point in
time, which could be a major weakness affecting their
accuracy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND:
Despite safety reports of the artificial sweetener aspartame,
health-related concerns remain.
OBJECTIVE:
We prospectively evaluated whether the consumption of
aspartame- and sugar-containing soda is associated with risk
of hematopoetic cancers.
DESIGN:
We repeatedly assessed diet in the Nurses' Health Study (NHS)
and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (HPFS). Over 22 y, we
identified 1324 non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs), 285 multiple
myelomas, and 339 leukemias. We calculated incidence RRs and
95% CIs by using Cox proportional hazards models.
RESULTS:
When the 2 cohorts were combined, there was no significant
association between soda intake and risks of NHL and multiple
myeloma. However, in men, ≥1 daily serving of diet soda
increased risks of NHL (RR: 1.31; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.72) and
multiple myeloma (RR: 2.02; 95% CI: 1.20, 3.40) in comparison
with men who did not consume diet soda. We observed no
increased risks of NHL and multiple myeloma in women. We also
observed an unexpected elevated risk of NHL (RR: 1.66; 95% CI:
1.10, 2.51) with a higher consumption of regular,
sugar-sweetened soda in men but not in women. In contrast,
when sexes were analyzed separately with limited power,
neither regular nor diet soda increased risk of leukemia but
were associated with increased leukemia risk when data for men
and women were combined (RR for consumption of ≥1 serving of
diet soda/d when the 2 cohorts were pooled: 1.42; 95% CI:
1.00, 2.02).
CONCLUSION:
Although our findings preserve the possibility of a
detrimental effect of a constituent of diet soda, such as
aspartame, on select cancers, the inconsistent sex effects and
occurrence of an apparent cancer risk in individuals who
consume regular soda do not permit the ruling out of chance as
an explanation.

The Cesare Maltoni Cancer Research Center of the European
Ramazzini Foundation has conducted a long-term bioassay on
aspartame (APM), a widely used artificial sweetener. APM was
administered with feed to 8-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats
(100-150/sex/group), at concentrations of 100,000, 50,000,
10,000, 2,000, 400, 80, or 0 ppm. The treatment lasted until
natural death, at which time all deceased animals underwent
complete necropsy. Histopathologic evaluation of all
pathologic lesions and of all organs and tissues collected was
routinely performed on each animal of all experimental groups.
The results of the study show for the first time that APM, in
our experimental conditions, causes a) an increased incidence
of malignant-tumor-bearing animals with a positive significant
trend in males (p < or = 0.05) and in females (p < or =
0.01), in particular those females treated at 50,000 ppm (p
< or = 0.01); b) an increase in lymphomas and leukemias
with a positive significant trend in both males (p < or =
0.05) and females (p < or = 0.01), in particular in females
treated at doses of 100,000 (p < or = 0.01), 50,000 (p <
or = 0.01), 10,000 (p < or = 0.05), 2,000 (p < or =
0.05), or 400 ppm (p < or = 0.01); c) a statistically
significant increased incidence, with a positive significant
trend (p < or = 0.01), of transitional cell carcinomas of
the renal pelvis and ureter and their precursors (dysplasias)
in females treated at 100,000 (p < or = 0.01), 50,000 (p
< or = 0.01), 10,000 (p < or = 0.01), 2,000 (p < or =
0.05), or 400 ppm (p < or = 0.05); and d) an increased
incidence of malignant schwannomas of peripheral nerves with a
positive trend (p < or = 0.05) in males. The results of
this mega-experiment indicate that APM is a multipotential
carcinogenic agent, even at a daily dose of 20 mg/kg body
weight, much less than the current acceptable daily intake. On
the basis of these results, a reevaluation of the present
guidelines on the use and consumption of APM is urgent and
cannot be delayed.

ability to digest food, metabolize hormones, regulate blood
sugar, It is most likely cause by GMO High Fructose Corn Syrup
(HFCS). It delivers a high dose of sugar in one dose unlike
fruit which takes awhile to metabolize and is therefore
delivered more slowly. It also is delivering the pesticide
associated with the GMO corn plant.
Those American teenagers are also being severely harmed
because the corn they eat in chips and drink in HFCS sodas and
drinks are GMO. Russian biologist Alexey V. Surov fed GMO soy
to hamsters. He had four groups. One was fed real food. The
second was fed real food that had been sprayed with the same
pesticide associated with the GMO soy. The third group was fed
GMO soy. And the fourth was fed a diet high in GMO soy. The
GMO soy diet after three generations produced offspring nearly
incapable of reproducing themselves. In the fourth group’s
third generation only one female was capable of giving birth
and 25% of her offspring died prematurely, Hair started
growing in the mouths of her pups, They were stunted and
sterile. Their internal organs including the testes, spleen
and uterus were smaller than those of the other hamsters. In
another study of GMO food on rats their testes changed color
from pink to blue. One study of GMO corn found that rats had
fewer babies and that those babies weighed less than those fed
real food. Scientists who appeared on TV were flooded with
calls from ranchers who had sterile animals which they
attributed to GMO feed. An English scientist who reproduced
the GMO rat experiments using potatoes was fired within days
of announcing his results.
But it gets worse for Americans just entering childbearing
years.
In 2001 Mitch Hein was President of Epicyte, a San Diego
bio-tech firm that made a protein that sterilized men and
women who ate the corn his company had genetically engineered.
Epicyte had gone to Mexico and found a rare protein in women
that was known as causing immune infertility. The
protein attacked sperm and prevented impregnation. When this
Epicyte protein was spliced by them into corn and fed to
men, it attacked their sperm and made them infertile. In women
this protein attacks sperm making normal conception
impossible. This protein has spread by normal plant
pollination. It would now be a herculean task to remove from
our food supply. And that is by design.
NAFTA bankrupted non GMO corn farmers in Mexico and allowed
GMO to poison the Mexican people as well as Americans. That
protein Epicyte developed was originated due to a request made
by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The Epicyte firm and its sterilizing protein was sold to
Monsanto and DuPont. Michael Taylor, a Monsanto lawyer and
executive, worked alternately between the USDA and and
Monsanto setting policies which deemed GMO food safe and not
needing regulation including labeling to warn consumers in
stores. He is now Food Safety Czar at the USDA despite having
served as a Monsanto VP. GMO foods have also been linked
to immune system failures and holes in the gastro-intestinal

However, zeolite powders normally release very high levels of
aluminum, and somewhat high levels of lead. The other
ingredients in the present invention are designed to bind with
and capture the excess aluminum and lead that is introduced by
the zeolites, allowing zeolites to be safely used to bind
cesium.
Zeolites are, in general, microporous, aluminosilicate
minerals of type Clinoptilolite. All zeolite materials contain
a high concentration of aluminum in its structure. All
zeolites also contain lead. Typically, zeolites which are
digested in gastric acid release significant concentrations of
aluminum, and much lower concentrations of lead. This
invention makes use of chemistry discoveries and methods which
minimize these releases of aluminum and lead, resulting in
them being measured at near-zero levels.
It is believed that CE-137 works on a combination of physical
adsorption as well as ion exchange. Without being bound by
theory, it is thought that the zeolite physically adsorbs
cesium atoms due to its unique physical structure. This
adsorption process works in the same way that carbon
(charcoal) adsorbs mercury. That is, it is a physical binding
process, not necessarily a chemical ion exchange.
The aluminum and lead given off by zeolites are bound and
captured by the other ingredients in the formula. It is
thought that the Al and Pb are bound using ion exchange
processes...
Radiation Defense Ingredients Preparation
The following section describes the harvesting and preparation
of each ingredient in the formula:
Zeolite powder (Clinoptilolite powder) is obtained by mining
zeolite material from zeolite-rich mines which are located in
North America and other nations such as Turkey. Raw zeolite
material is scooped out of the ground using excavation
equipment such as a Caterpillar 20-ton excavator. The material
is loaded into large trucks which transport it to a washing
station to remove dust and soil debris. Once washed, the
material is dried and then milled to the desired mesh size.
Dehydrated seaweed: Seaweed specimens are collected by
swimmers from shallow coastal waters and stacked in a large
washing container. They are washed to remove debris and salt
water. After washing they are dried using a large commercial
air dryer with a slow mixing/agitation wheel in order to allow
the seaweed sufficient exposure to air. Once fully dried, the
seaweed specimens are ground to a power of approximately a
#100 mesh size, producing a gray-white powder. This powder is
packaged for use in manufacturing.
Seawater extract: A saturated salt (brine) area of seawater is
identified, usually at very low depth. The water is extracted
by means of a long pump, then mixed with dolomitic limestone
(CaMg(Co3)2) to precipitate solids. The mixture is heated to
high temperature, driving off the carbon dioxide and leaving
“calcined dolime,” a seawater extract. This solid material is
ground to approximately #100 mesh particle size.
Chlorella: Strains of the single-celled algae known as
Chlorella vulgaris are grown in large vats of water and fed
sufficient nutrients to support their growth to maturity. Once
fully grown, chlorella is harvested out of the water by means
of large filters which separate the chlorella alga from the
water in which they were grown. This green mass is rinsed with
fresh water, flash dried on a conveyor belt, then agitated by
powerful sonic blasts in order to disrupt their cell walls and
provide improved bioavailability. Finally, this green mass is
powdered to a relatively large mesh size of around #40 mesh.
Spirulina: Spirulina pacifica is a strain of edible blue-green
algae which can be grown in large outdoor pools which combine
fresh water with deep ocean water that enriches the spirulina
with minerals. Once fully grown, the spirulina is harvested
from the water by means of large filters giving a green mass
which is rinsed with fresh water, flash dried on a conveyor
belt, then ground to a relatively large mesh size of around
#40 mesh.
Particle sizes of the above ingredient are specifically chosen
to avoid passing through intestinal walls (99% of particles
are >5 microns in diameter)...

A very Jewish coup
There are times when something hidden in plain sight
suddenly hits you right between the eyes. Nothing in my
experience has matched the realisation that the current
impeachment process against Trump is in effect a Jewish coup
against a sitting President. Sure, I did have the vague idea
that it was pretty Jewy but only when I started to dig deeper
did I realise that it's a Tribal project from start to finish,
top to bottom. Mad-eyed demon-possessed Adam Schiff, Jerry
Nadler, Elliot Engel, Nita Lowey and that Congresswoman who
held up the Talmud as she announced she was supporting the
impeachment are running the project in the House. Same with
the prosecution staff who are lead by one Daniel Sachs
Goldman, a name that sounds like a caricature from Der
Sturmer. There's hardly a goy on the whole Project Team. Same
with the witnesses for the prosecution. Ambassadors Sondberg
and Yovanovitch, so-called whistleblower Vindman, that guy
from the National Security Council, the Ukraine's President
and several of that country's oligarchs...all Jewish.
Meanwhile they all seem to know one another! And of course the
(((MSM))) has been fully on board with the Project from day
one. Speaking of which don't forget that Project Impeachment
has been on the go almost from the day Trump was elected. And
again it was Jews running the show. Rep. Steve Cohen started
the ball rolling in 2017 while Rep. Brad Sherman introduced
the initial impeachment articles based on the bogus Russiagate
conspiracy. Billionaire Tom Steyer donated $50 million to the
project a few years ago.
This is nothing less than a Jewish coup against the
Constitutionally elected President of the United States. And
it's going on in plain sight. Even the Jewish media openly
admits it. Celebrates it would be more accurate. Just check
out the Jerusalem Post, Times Of Israel, The Forward, Haaretz,
the JTA and others.
And who's leading the fight against impeachment on Trump's
behalf? Chabad-Lubavitcher Jared Kushner. Seriously, you
couldn't make this stuff up! Look, I've barely scratched
the surface here. Please check out this great video for a
comprehensive insight into the jaw-dropping scale of this
treachery.
Now that I've recovered my composure let me make a few points
and ask a few questions. First, why are 'the Jews' doing
everything in their power to take down Trump given that his
support for Israel has been almost embarrassingly servile? And
why does he keep appointing people who hate him to top
positions in his Administration? People who stabbed him in the
back at the first suitable opportunity? And now Kushner - 'one
of them' - is leading his defence?
I just don't get it.
Next question: Have Jews any idea of this plot's
ramifications? I ask because it plays right into the
stereotype of the scheming and subversive Jew and thus has the
potential to expose the ZOG in a way previously unimaginable.
Yet they seem blind to the risks. Does this again
illustrate their legendary habit of pushing too far, of never
knowing when to stop? Surely, despite the controlled media,
the identity of who's behind the coup will become apparent? If
so there will be millions of angry White Trump supporters out
there, thirsting for revenge. But today the country is split
down the middle, between Traditional America on one side and a
rancid stew of leftist Whites and ethnic minorities on the
other. How could this play out?
Well I leave you with this thought: The parallels between 1917
Russia and the USA today are chilling. Having fomented
conditions of severe social and political instability the
Jewish Bolsheviks eventually seized control of the whole
Russian Empire after a dreadful civil war. Thereafter they
instituted a regime that killed directly or indirectly tens of
millions of Christian Russians. Churches were burned down or
converted to warehouses while 'anti-semitic' acts
incurred the death penalty. A crazy comparison? Maybe. But
remember that Jews in Russia back then had little power having
been for many years severely constrained by the Czars.
Contrast that with America today where they control politics,
finance, media, academia and - crucially - Big Tech.
Final thought: As with Russia in 1917 and America today
somebody named Schiff was/is masterminding the project.

2019, in San Francisco. Why has the idea of individual
sovereignty been granted such primacy of place in free Western
societies? Why were the men who formulated the Declaration of
Independence willing to declare: “We hold these truths
to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they
are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,
that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of
Happiness," and, further, to insist "That to secure these
rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their
just powers from the consent of the governed."
Why, as well, are ideas of individual sovereignty, which have
proved so successful in guaranteeing freedom and prosperity in
the West and, increasingly, around the world, under attack, by
those on the left and the right who offer collective identity
as an alternative?
