Bruce DePalma enhanced the concept of Faraday's Unipolar Disc Dynamo and called it the N-Machine. Faraday's version was a conductor rotating between two magnetic fields. DePalma's version has the magnets rotating together WITH the conductor so what is inducing what into what??? It is still somewhat of a mystery how it works as all the modern conventional explainations fall flat - it's not even supposed to work!
There have been many variations of the N-Machine by Trombly and Tewari who have taken it further, but the primary problem with all of them is that they put out a lot of current but almost no voltage.
Years ago, I came up with a method that allows me to get any voltage I want and at the upcoming conference, I'll show how I can charge a cap to 18 volts, enough to charge a battery, with a magnet only 2 inches in diameter and at only 2000 rpm. THE TORSION FIELD AND THE AURA

ABSTRACT
The new sciences of biophotons and torsion fields provide a bridge between two views of life: the old twentieth century view of an organism as a chemical machine and the emerging view of life as communication and energetic flows. In the new paradigm, DNA is the source of biophotons, governing cellular machinery, communications and behavior. It governs growth and metabolism, with high energetic efficiency. The coherent biophoton field forms a hologram throughout the body, telling each DNA molecule where it fits in the overall blueprint, and governing cell differentiation and specialization. With the creation of each biophoton there is also a torsion wave. Torsion is a widespread and important form of radiation which couples particle spins together, and propagates through space as a twisting wave in the metric. It results in a variety of new phenomena. These effects have been studied extensively for the past forty years, at multiple research centers in Russia. Their most important conclusion is that this torsion force is exactly the same as subtle energy.
Equations can predict torsion behavior, and inventions and practical devices have been developed using it. Although the biophotons carry electromagnetic energy and are contained mostly within the body, torsion waves easily penetrate tissue and form the primary holographic pattern outside the body. This includes the subtle structure of the aura and chakras, and also the long range signals used in distance energy healing.
The torsion field has been shown to couple to consciousness. It is a higher dimensional field, describing additional degrees of freedom absent in Western science today. Torsion fields obey Yang-Mills gauge equations, can alter the rate of time and produce stable energy forms without the need for matter. Melting permafrost has flooded the global seed vault

The Global Seed Vault, which has been called “the Noah’s Ark of plant diversity,” has flooded after the permafrost around it thawed.
The frozen safe house, designed to protect the seeds of tens of thousands of food crops from global disaster, opened in 2008 in Svalbard, Norway. The vault hold seeds from every country in the world to safeguard agriculture against man-made or natural disaster.
“Workers in gene banks, farmers have struggled to produce all these seeds and sent them here because they feel safe when they send the seeds here,” the vault’s coordinator Asmund Asdal said last year in a Motherboard documentary about the seed vault, where he also compares it to the Biblical ship.
Encased in permafrost, the earth around the vault that has been frozen for thousands of years was meant to protect the seeds indefinitely. But according to The Guardian, unusually warm temperatures and heavy rain flooded the entrance to the vault — although the water didn’t reach the seeds inside.
“It was supposed to [operate] without the help of humans, but now we are watching the seed vault 24 hours a day,” a Norwegian government spokesperson told The Guardian. The vault’s creators hadn’t envisioned weather this extreme, she said.
Work is now underway to waterproof the tunnel that leads to the vault. Electrical equipment that was warming the tunnel has been removed and new pumps are being added. Workers are also digging channels to divert water away from the vault...

A biochemical compound called adenosine is both the cause of osteoarthritis and the subject of promising research for a new joint treatment to prevent millions of joint replacement procedures completed annually as a result of osteoarthritis pain.
Adenosine is made up of equal parts adenine, a nucleotide, and a ribose sugar molecule. The compound is also derived from adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a molecule incorporated by the body to hold on to energy until it’s needed for use by cells. Adenosine’s role in osteoarthritis development comes from its regulation of chondrocyte populations, the specialized cells responsible for both the production and maintenance of a part of cartilage tissue in joints called extracellular matrix, which makes cartilage the stable and flexible tissue that it is.
Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease, is the most common chronic condition of the joints, causing pain, stiffness, and swelling as a result of the breakdown of cartilage between the joints. Past research indicated that together, inflammation and aging contribute to a reduction in ATP production in chondrocytes. The newest study, from the NYU Langone Medical Center, now links this phenomenon to osteoarthritis...
"We found that if adenosine levels decrease, or if the capacity to respond to adenosine diminishes, cartilage starts to degenerate," explained senior study investigator Bruce Cronstein, MD. "Our study suggests that diminished ATP and adenosine production are likely contributing factors to the development of osteoarthritis in aging individuals.”

American Revolution 'pointless' because judges now rule
Daniel Horowitz on how America lost self-government
Americans have already lost their right to self-government. Every issue of importance is decided by unelected judges. And while the Republican majority and President Trump seem without power, the country is gripped in nothing less than a “foundational crisis.”
That’s the charge of Daniel Horowitz, author of “Stolen Sovereignty,” who outlined the existential stakes facing the American people in an interview with Stefan Molyneux.
“The most foundational constitutional crisis I identified is the judicial crisis,” said Horowitz. “None of our government operates the way it was intended to operate. That’s for sure … But the single biggest crisis we have is judicial supremacy, the notion that the unelected branch of government, which has lifetime appointments, there’s nothing you can do, very closed, archaic profession, that they are the sole and final arbiter of every social and political issue. That in itself is a coup King George never thought of. That’s nuts.”
Horowitz points out in his book judicial rule raises a fundamental question.
“What … was the point of the American Revolution if unelected judges are making massive changes to society?” asked Molyneux. “No social transformation without representation. It cracks the question for a lot of people. When we look at immigration and demographics and Third World cultures pouring into the West, nobody asked for this! People opposed it! How did it come about?”
Horowitz argued the book was ahead of its time when it was released. America now has a president who has actually shown some willingness to enforce America’s immigration laws, yet remarkably, the courts are simply nullifying existing laws based on the whims of judges, in violation of centuries of judicial precedent.
And the worst, predicted Horowitz, is yet to come, when courts implement what he believes is the “final frontier in social transformation without representation.”
“They’ve redefined marriage, they’re now redefining sexuality, what they’re going to do is take all the … rights they’ve created for the protected classes of Americans and they’re going to copy and paste those to 7.2 billion people in the world and create an affirmative right to immigrate. They just did exactly that. And not just the Supreme Court! Even puny district court judges are regarded as the sole and final arbiter, over the president, the Congress, longstanding statute, 200 years of settled case law where the courts themselves said they have no provenance in immigration.”
However, the legal struggles that have consumed the Trump administration at least have one beneficial effect. Americans are beginning to notice they no longer truly govern themselves.
“People appreciate it now, like with the ‘deep state,'” said Horowitz. “People can begin to appreciate that elections don’t mean anything. A lot of people say, ‘Well, Daniel, we’re not a democracy, we’re a republic.’ Of course. But as Madison said, what does a republic mean? The people always have the decisions at arm’s length. The power always gets back to the people. They are the source.”
In contrast, today, when it comes to the most important social issues, the American people have virtually no input whatsoever. Even their elected officials have seemingly no power. And the most important issue of all, according to Horowitz, is mass immigration.
“What is the most important issue a country will ever deal with?” asked Horowitz. “In my mind, it’s the future orientation of that country, [who will be] the future voting population of that country that will determine every other issue. … I think many of us would say that if you didn’t have California becoming what it did, going from the breadbasket of Republican voters in Orange County in Ronald Reagan’s time to now, Orange County in California having 40 percent of the entire population speaking a language other than English at home. Again, no one voted for that. That was done primarily by bureaucrats not following statute. And now, you have the courts doing that.
“Being that immigration is the most important, that absolutely more than anything else must be held at arm’s length from the people. Sovereignty has to be up to the people. We have to decide who we want to let in and who we don’t. … [Otherwise,] we have no control over our country.”

Unfortunately, Horowitz believes America has already all but reached that point. The legal profession is in a “crisis mode,” he said, and worst of all, the process of social transformation being driven by the courts is only moving in one direction. Even the very pretenses of constitutionalism or the rule of law are being openly defied.
“They have reached such a point where it’s a one-way street. It’s a dead end for conservatives, and [judges] will literally give what’s a federal power to the states, what’s a state power they will give to the feds, and then contradict themselves on the same issue depending what outcome is the ‘right thing’’for whoever,” he said.
“If it’s for blacks, Hispanics, illegal immigrants, the means justify the ends. An inalienable right they will read out. What’s antithetical to that they will read in. It is a complete circus.”
Horowitz borrowed the term “legal fog” from the late Justice Antonin Scalia to describe how this kind of shallow legal reasoning gradually builds on itself until the radical left can essentially mandate whatever policy ends it wants.
“It basically means, ‘This is not who we are, these are not our values,'” Horowitz said, mocking the left’s propensity to simply declare its own moral superiority over other Americans.
“And the thing is, they’re able to build up over the years a bunch of legal fog and then draw upon it, and you can never go backwards but only add. It’s a ratchet, a legal ratchet. And this is why this whole idea of, oh, we should just appoint better judges – dude, that ship sailed 50 years ago.”
Horowitz is skeptical the Republican Party is capable of meaningful action on the issue, or indeed, on much of anything else. But he said the Constitution does provide ways to solve the problem of judicial supremacy, if conservatives can find the courage to use them.
“The single biggest thing is understanding the power of Congress over the courts,” said Horowitz. “It boggles the mind that this is the single biggest silver bullet and it doesn’t even get an airing. It’s straight out of the Constitution. We need a revolution. But at least, let’s try everything that’s written in the Constitution! Let’s use our constitutional tools! It amazes me we have an entire generation of Americans that think the courts are the sole and final arbiter. They’re not. Everything they’ve done is wrong.
“Even with this system, there is a remedy to take back jurisdiction. Article III, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution, the entire jurisdiction of the courts are the subject matter. The Supreme Court, much less the lower courts, which are a creation of Congress, are subject to exceptions and regulations that Congress should make.”
Horowitz maintains Congress has the power, right now, to simply strip the courts of jurisdiction over major societal issues, including marriage, religious liberty and immigration. If the Republican majority doesn’t take this step, he warned, Congress will never be able to move on any of these issues.
“When I wrote this book, it was a warning; now you see what happened,” he said. “You can see now, you will never get anywhere unless you do judicial reform.”

Scientists Reveal Ramen Noodles Cause Heart Disease, Stroke & Metabolic Syndrome
The dangers of ramen noodles are self-evident to most, however there will always be those who will deny the dangers of consuming them. After all, it’s a staple food for college kids so how bad could it be? It can’t kill you right? New research from Baylor University and Harvard says it can. The noodles increase people’s risk of metabolic changes linked to heart disease and stroke, researchers found. Ramen noodles contain Tertiary-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ), which is a byproduct of the petroleum industry and food additive frequently to preserve cheap processed foods. A gastrointestinal specialist conducted an experiment with a time lapse video inside the stomach to what would happen after two hours of digesting ramen noodles and the results were staggering.
In the most recent study in the Journal of Nutrition, women in South Korea who consumed more of the precooked blocks of dried noodles were more likely to have “metabolic syndrome” regardless of what else they ate, or how much they exercised, the researchers found. People with metabolic syndrome may have high blood pressure or high blood sugar levels, and face an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. The dried noodle block was originally created by flash frying cooked noodles, and this is still the main method used in Asian countries, though air-dried noodle blocks are favoured in Western countries. The main ingredients of the dried noodle are wheat flour, palm oil, and salt. Common ingredients of the flavouring powder are salt, monosodium glutamate, seasoning, and sugar. A typical cup-type instant noodles contain 2700 mg of sodium.
“Although instant noodle is a convenient and delicious food, there could be an increased risk for metabolic syndrome given [the food’s] high sodium, unhealthy saturated fat and glycemic loads,” said study co-author Hyun Shin, a doctoral candidate at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. Shin and his colleagues at Baylor University and Harvard analyzed the health and diet of nearly 11,000 adults in South Korea between ages 19 to 64. The participants reported what they ate, and the researchers categorized each participant’s diet as centered on either traditional healthy food or fast food, as well as how many times weekly they ate instant noodles.
The study focused on individuals in South Korea, Shin said, as the country has the highest per-capita number of instant noodle consumers in the world, and because, in recent years, health problems there, including heart disease and obesity, have been on the rise. But the findings appear to be quite relevant to consumers stateside too, as the United States ranked sixth globally in instant noodle sales, according to the World Instant Noodles Association, which found that the United States accounted for 4,300 billion units sold in 2013 (coming in just behind China, Indonesia, Japan, Vietnam, and India — and one spot above South Korea, in fact).
Women who ate instant noodles twice a week or more had a higher risk of metabolic syndrome than those who ate ramen less, or not at all, regardless of whether their diet style fell into the traditional or fast-food category. The researchers found the association even among young women who were leaner and reported doing more physical activity.
As for men, Shin and his colleagues guessed that biological differences between the genders, like the effect of sex hormones and metabolism, might account for the lack of an apparent association among males between eating instant noodles and developing metabolic syndrome. The study was conducted in South Korea, an area known to have the largest ramen consumption group in the world, where people consumed 3.4 billion packages of instant noodles in 2010.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are becoming a big problem, because every year more GMOs are being created and sold on the public market without proper testing of how they affect the environment and the human body. As the published date (April 6, 2017) of this article, there are no effective laws that require GMOs to be labelled in the USA. Fortunately, many other countries throughout the world have GMO labeling laws.
The problem with GMOs is that they do not harmonize well with the energy and genes of our bodies. Scientific studies have linked GMOs to serious health problems, such as infertility, birth defects, immune disorders, growth and digestive problems, and premature aging. The health hazards of GMOs are becoming mainstream, causing one of the outlets of the mainstream media to admit that GMOs are health hazards.
Because GMOs are health hazards and most of them are not labelled properly, we need to find alternative ways to detect GMOs. One alternative way is to use a GMO detection device.

First, it uses two antennas: one fixed in place and another that moves. The fixed antenna records a Wi-Fi field's background, or reference, for the spot it's placed in. The other antenna is moved by hand to record the same Wi-Fi field from many different points.
"These antennas don't need to be big. They can be very small, like the ones in a smartphone," Holl says.
Second, both antennas record not only the intensity (or brightness) of a Wi-Fi signal, but also its phase: a property of light that comes from the fact it's a wave. Laser light is all one phase, for example (which makes it an excellent method to create holograms), while an incandescent bulb puts out a mix of different phases of light. Similar to lasers, Wi-Fi routers emit microwave radiation in discrete frequencies and phases.
Finally, the signals from both antennas are simultaneously fed into a computer, and software teases out the differences of intensity and phase "more or less in real-time," Holl says.
This is where the magic happens: The software builds many 2D images as one antenna is waved around and then stacks them together in a 3D hologram. And because Wi-Fi travels through most walls, those holograms are of objects inside a room...

So far, 90 people have been tested for the presence of the virus, and 40 tested positive, according to The Independent. They also achieved lower scores in tasks designed to measure attention,” reports the paper.

A virus that infects human brains and makes us more stupid has been discovered, according to scientists in the US.
The algae virus, never before observed in healthy people, was found to affect cognitive functions including visual processing and spatial awareness.
Scientists at Johns Hopkins Medical School and the University of Nebraska stumbled upon the discovery when they were undertaking an unrelated study into throat microbes.
Surprisingly, the researchers found DNA in the throats of healthy individuals that matched the DNA of a virus known to infect green algae.
Dr Robert Yolken, a virologist who led the original study, said: “This is a striking example showing that the ‘innocuous’ microorganisms we carry can affect behaviour and cognition.
“Many physiological differences between person A and person B are encoded in the set of genes each inherits from parents, yet some of these differences are fuelled by the various microorganisms we harbour and the way they interact with our genes.”

Human mucosal surfaces contain a wide range of microorganisms. The biological effects of these organisms are largely unknown. Large-scale metagenomic sequencing is emerging as a method to identify novel microbes. Unexpectedly, we identified DNA sequences homologous to virus ATCV-1, an algal virus not previously known to infect humans, in oropharyngeal samples obtained from healthy adults. The presence of ATCV-1 was associated with a modest but measurable decrease in cognitive functioning. A relationship between ATCV-1 and cognitive functioning was confirmed in a mouse model, which also indicated that exposure to ATCV-1 resulted in changes in gene expression within the brain. Our study indicates that viruses in the environment not thought to infect humans can have biological effects.
Abstract
Chloroviruses (family Phycodnaviridae) are large DNA viruses known to infect certain eukaryotic green algae and have not been previously shown to infect humans or to be part of the human virome. We unexpectedly found sequences homologous to the chlorovirus Acanthocystis turfacea chlorella virus 1 (ATCV-1) in a metagenomic analysis of DNA extracted from human oropharyngeal samples. These samples were obtained by throat swabs of adults without a psychiatric disorder or serious physical illness who were participating in a study that included measures of cognitive functioning. The presence of ATCV-1 DNA was confirmed by quantitative PCR with ATCV-1 DNA being documented in oropharyngeal samples obtained from 40 (43.5%) of 92 individuals. The presence of ATCV-1 DNA was not associated with demographic variables but was associated with a modest but statistically significant decrease in the performance on cognitive assessments of visual processing and visual motor speed. We further explored the effects of ATCV-1 in a mouse model. The inoculation of ATCV-1 into the intestinal tract of 9–11-wk-old mice resulted in a subsequent decrease in performance in several cognitive domains, including ones involving recognition memory and sensory-motor gating. ATCV-1 exposure in mice also resulted in the altered expression of genes within the hippocampus. These genes comprised pathways related to synaptic plasticity, learning, memory formation, and the immune response to viral exposure.

THE TORSION FIELD AND THE AURA

The new sciences of biophotons and torsion fields provide a bridge between two views of life: the old twentieth century view of an organism as a chemical machine and the emerging view of life as communication and energetic flows. In the new paradigm, DNA is the source of biophotons, governing cellular
machinery, communications and behavior. It governs growth and metabolism, with high energetic efficiency. The coherent biophoton field forms a hologram throughout the body, telling each DNA molecule where it fits in the overall blueprint, and governing cell differentiation and specialization. With the creation of each biophoton there is also a torsion wave. Torsion is a widespread and important form of radiation which couples particle spins together, and propagates through space as a twisting wave in the metric. It results in a variety of new phenomena. These effects have been studied extensively for the past forty years, at multiple research centers in Russia. Their most important conclusion is that this torsion force is exactly the same as subtle energy.
Equations can predict torsion behavior, and inventions and practical devices have been developed using it. Although the biophotons carry electromagnetic energy and are contained mostly within the body, torsion waves easily penetrate tissue and form the primary holographic pattern outside the body. This includes the subtle structure of the aura and chakras, and also the long range signals used in distance energy healing.
The torsion field has been shown to couple to consciousness. It is a higher dimensional field, describing additional degrees of freedom absent in Western science today. Torsion fields obey Yang-Mills gauge equations, can alter the rate of time and produce stable energy forms without the need for matter. These fields can explain many kinds of “spiritual” phenomena ignored so far by mainstream physics. Torsion appears to be the missing ingredient which makes it possible to develop a true science of consciousness and understand the nature of life. Hence it may truly be called the “life force.”

The Turin King List
According to an ancient and very unique papyrus known as the Turin King List (or the Turin Royal Canon), ten Neteru, or “gods”, reigned for hundreds of years each, for a total of 23,200 years. After this comes a list dedicated to the Shemsu Hor, the Followers of Horus, who reigned a total of 13,400 years.
The Turin papyrus was discovered by the Italian traveler Bernardino Drovetti in 1820 at Luxor (Thebes), Egypt and it is the most extensive list available of kings compiled by the ancient Egyptians. It contains the names of rulers and the lengths of reigns, including kings from the 15th Dynasty, and Hyksos rulers. My Name is Doctor Lucian Guardian. Having a rather long career in advanced robotic design and beam control systems, I have been observing these strange transmissions with more than a little interest. The general appearance and propagation mimics a design used during the Cold War period known as RODAN (Recombinant Oscillating Dense Array – Nuclear) Fields. This technology was universally placed on the shelf owing to the direct coupling with the earth’s magnetosphere, and the observed destruction that was inadvertently caused in California, Alaska, Iran and China. As I retired from the field, however, cryptic Black Programmers would sometimes mention a new research avenue called BUMEYE which was an application of nuclear pumped particles in a highly excited state; I believe the acronym stood for Bosun Upper Modulated, Electrical Y-Wave Excitation, but I cannot claim to know this for certain. I did, firsthand, observe the effects of a test generation however, as I was taken to the test locale for a related matter. What I observed was the utter destruction of a very strong, reinforced wall of approximately 30 feet in height and nearly 500 yards in length. This testing was done a very remote parcel under the auspices of Naval Weapons Station, China Lake, and was located near the small and somewhat mysterious desert village of Johannesburg. In our company was one of the test – not design – skunks, who commented that the BUMEYE sounded like a “Sky Trumpet”, both shrill and bass resonant.

New Research Shocks Scientists: Human Emotion Physically Shapes Reality!
Three different studies, done by different teams of scientists proved something really extraordinary. But when a new research connected these 3 discoveries, something shocking was realized, something hiding in plain sight.
Human emotion literally shapes the world around us. Not just our perception of the world, but reality itself.
In the first experiment, human DNA, isolated in a sealed container, was placed near a test subject. Scientists gave the donor emotional stimulus and fascinatingly enough, the emotions affected their DNA in the other room.
In the presence of negative emotions the DNA tightened. In the presence of positive emotions the coils of the DNA relaxed.
The scientists concluded that “Human emotion produces effects which defy conventional laws of physics.”
In the second, similar but unrelated experiment, different group of scientists extracted Leukocytes (white blood cells) from donors and placed into chambers so they could measure electrical changes.
In this experiment, the donor was placed in one room and subjected to “emotional stimulation” consisting of video clips, which generated different emotions in the donor.
The DNA was placed in a different room in the same building. Both the donor and his DNA were monitored and as the donor exhibited emotional peaks or valleys (measured by electrical responses), the DNA exhibited the IDENTICAL RESPONSES AT THE EXACT SAME TIME.
There was no lag time, no transmission time. The DNA peaks and valleys EXACTLY MATCHED the peaks and valleys of the donor in time.
The scientists wanted to see how far away they could separate the donor from his DNA and still get this effect. They stopped testing after they separated the DNA and the donor by 50 miles and STILL had the SAME result. No lag time; no transmission time.
The DNA and the donor had the same identical responses in time. The conclusion was that the donor and the DNA can communicate beyond space and time.
The third experiment proved something pretty shocking!
Scientists observed the effect of DNA on our physical world.
Light photons, which make up the world around us, were observed inside a vacuum. Their natural locations were completely random.
Human DNA was then inserted into the vacuum. Shockingly the photons were no longer acting random. They precisely followed the geometry of the DNA.
Scientists who were studying this, described the photons behaving “surprisingly and counter-intuitively”. They went on to say that “We are forced to accept the possibility of some new field of energy!”
They concluded that human DNA literally shape the behavior of light photons that make up the world around us!
So when a new research was done, and all of these 3 scientific claims were connected together, scientists were shocked.
They came to a stunning realization that if our emotions affect our DNA and our DNA shapes the world around us, than our emotions physically change the world around us.

Caltech researchers demonstrate a clean technique for using heat and catalysts to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

An experimental approach to splitting water might lead to a relatively cheap and clean method for large-scale hydrogen production that doesn’t require fossil fuels. The process splits water into hydrogen and oxygen using heat and catalysts made from inexpensive materials.
Heat-driven water splitting is an alternative to electrolysis, which is expensive and requires large amounts of electricity. The new approach, developed by Caltech chemical-engineering professor Mark Davis, avoids the key problems with previous heat-driven methods of water splitting. It works at relatively low temperatures and doesn’t produce any toxic or corrosive intermediate products.
Almost all the hydrogen used now in industrial processes, such as making gasoline, comes from reforming natural gas. If automakers start selling large numbers of hydrogen-fuel-cell vehicles, as they’ve said they plan to do eventually, the hydrogen for those is also likely to come from natural gas unless processes like the one at Caltech are commercialized.
The basic approach in high-temperature water splitting is to heat up an oxidized metal to drive off oxygen, then add water. In Davis’s case, the starting material is manganese oxide, and the reactions are facilitated by shuttling sodium ions in and out of it. “Without the sodium, the temperatures would go up well over 1,000 °C,” Davis says. With it, the reactions work at temperatures of 850 °C or lower.
The technology is probably far from being commercialized. It still requires pretty high temperatures—a couple of hundred degrees higher, for example, than those used to drive steam turbines at coal and nuclear power plants. Producing those temperatures without fossil fuels would probably involve one of two technologies, neither of which is being used commercially right now: high-temperature nuclear reactors or high-concentration solar thermal facilities that use rings of mirrors to concentrate sunlight more intensely than occurs today in solar thermal power plants.
The Caltech approach would also need to be tested to make sure the water-splitting cycle can run repeatedly. So far, the researchers have shown that the same materials can be reused five times, but “if you were going to have one of these things work for real, you’d need to run it for thousands of cycles,” Davis says. He says such testing is beyond the scope of his lab. “We feel good about the potential for many cycles on this one, but until you do it, you don’t know,” he says. “All we did here is prove the chemistry could work.”
The rate of hydrogen production would also need to be increased—for example, by switching to materials with a higher surface area. And Davis hopes to lower the temperatures needed still further. The goal is to use this process or a similar one to make use of waste heat at steel mills and power plants. “This is a good start, but the lower we go, the better,” he says.

Reading other people's body language is tricky business.
If someone's crossing his arms, for example, you could assume that he's closed off, when in fact he's just cold.
That said, when you're trying to discern what a person is really thinking and feeling, it helps to know what kind of gestures and facial expressions to look for.
Because sometimes, a person's nonverbal displays don't quite match up with what she's telling you out loud.
Below, we've rounded up 19 scientific insights into the significance of body language, pulled from Psychology Today, research journals, and a few awesome books.
The shoulder shrug is a universal signal of not knowing what's going on
According to Barbara Pease and Allan Pease, authors of "The Definitive Book of Body Language," everybody does the shoulder shrug.
The shrug is a "good example of a universal gesture that is used to show that a person doesn't know or doesn't understand what you are saying," they write.
"It's a multiple gesture that has three main parts," they continue. "Exposed palms to show nothing is being concealed in the hands, hunched shoulders to protect the throat from attack, and raised brow, which is a universal, submissive greeting."
Open palms are an ancient display of honesty
When someone swears to tell the truth in a court of law, they put one hand on a religious text and raise their other hand into the air, palm facing whoever they're speaking to.
That's because, the Peases write in "The Definitive Book of Body Language," an open palm has been associated with "truth, honesty, allegiance, and submission" throughout Western history.
"Just as a dog will expose its throat to show submission or surrender to the victor," they write, "humans use their palms to show that they are unarmed and therefore not a threat."
A lack of crinkles around the eyes suggests a potentially fake smile
The jury is still out on whether we can tell when someone is faking what scientists call a Duchenne smile. It's the expression we make when we're genuinely experiencing positive emotion.
At one point, researchers believed that making a genuine smile was nearly impossible to do on command. The smile, they said, was all about the crow's-feet around your eyes. When you're smiling joyfully, they crinkle. When you're faking it, they don't.
If someone's trying to look happy but really isn't, you won't see the wrinkles.
More recently, a study from Northeastern University researchers found that people could do a pretty good job of faking a Duchenne smile, even when they weren't feeling especially happy.
It seems safe to say that if the crinkles aren't there, the person's probably not genuinely happy. But just because the crinkles are there doesn't necessarily mean they're elated.
Raised eyebrows are often a sign of discomfort
In the same way that real smiles shape the wrinkles around your eyes, University of Massachusetts professor Susan Krauss Whitbourne writes on Psychology Today that worry, surprise, or fear can cause people to raise their eyebrows in discomfort.
So if someone compliments your new hairstyle or outfit with their eyebrows raised, it may not be sincere.
A pointed finger with a closed hand is an attempt at displaying dominance
If someone is closing their palm and pointing with their index finger, then they're trying to display dominance, though it doesn't always work out.
"The Palm-Closed-Finger-Pointed is a fist where the pointed finger is used like a symbolic club with which the speaker figuratively beats his listeners into submission," the Peases write. "Subconsciously, it evokes negative feelings in others because it precedes a right overarm blow, a primal move most primates use in a physical attack."
If they mirror your body language, the conversation is probably going well
When two people are getting along, their postures and movements mirror each other's. When your best friend crosses her legs, you will, too. If you're on a date that's going well, you'll both be making the same goofy hand gestures.
This is because we mirror each other when we're feeling a connection, says positive psychologist Barbara Fredrickson.
But if they look into your eyes for too long, they might be lying
In an attempt to avoid looking shifty-eyed, some liars will purposefully hold their gaze a touch too long, so that it's slightly uncomfortable, according to behavioral analyst and body language expert Lillian Glass.
They may also stand very still and not blink.
Eye contact shows interest — both positive and negative
When you look someone in the eyes, it sets an arousal state in the body.
"How that arousal is interpreted, however, depends on the parties involved and the circumstances," writes Claremont McKenna College organizational psychologist Ronald E. Riggio.
"Being stared at by a stranger who appears large or ominous can be seen as a threat and elicit a fear response. ... However, the gaze of a potential sexual partner causes arousal that can be interpreted positively — as a sexual invitation."
An expansive pose signals power and a sense of achievement
How people hold themselves is a big clue to how they're feeling.
If someone's leaning back and relaxed, they probably feel powerful and in control. In fact, research has found that even people born blind raise their arms in a V shape when they win a physical competition.
A 'cluster' of gestures shows a real feeling of connection
Attraction isn't communicated through one signal but a sequence.
Neuropsychologist Marsha Lucas suggests one to watch for: "After making eye contact, she looks down a bit, gathers or otherwise preens her hair, and then looks up at you while her chin is tipped."
Crossed legs are usually a sign of resistance and low receptivity, and are a bad sign in a negotiation
Out of 2,000 negotiations videotaped by Gerard I. Nierenberg and Henry H. Calero, the authors of "How to Read a Person Like a Book," there wasn't a single settlement when one of the negotiators had their legs crossed.
"Psychologically, crossed legs signal that a person is mentally, emotionally, and physically closed off," writes psychologist Travis Bradberry — which may mean they're less likely to budge in a negotiation.
A clenched jaw, tightened neck, or furrowed brow shows stress
All these are "limbic responses" associated with the limbic system in the brain.
"Emotion, spotting and reacting to threats, as well as assuring our survival, are all heavy responsibilities of the limbic system," writes former FBI counterintelligence agent Joe Navarro.
"The bus leaves without us, and we are clenching our jaws, rubbing our necks. We are asked to work another weekend, and the orbits of our eyes narrow as our chin lowers."
Humans have been displaying discomfort this way for millions of years, Navarro says.
If they repeatedly touch their face or their hands, they're probably nervous
Navarro told Business Insider that we've evolved to display nervousness without using any words.
Some of the most common manifestations of our anxiety? Touching your face and rubbing the skin on your hands. Both can be soothing behaviors when you're feeling uncomfortable.
"It's hilarious how often we touch ourselves under stress," Navarro said.
If they're laughing with you, they're probably into you
If someone is receptive to your humor, they're likely interested in you.
Evolutionary psychologists say that humor — and positive reception to humor — play a pivotal role in human development. They serve as a way of signaling a desire for a relationship, be it platonic or romantic.
Expansive, authoritative postures show leadership
Whether they're innate or learned, there are a number of signals and behaviors people use when they feel that they're a leader, or at least are trying to convince you that they are.
They include holding an erect posture, walking purposefully, steepling and palm-down hand gestures, and generally open and expansive body postures.
A shaking leg signals a shaky inner state
"Your legs are the largest area of your body," University of Massachusetts professor Susan Whitbourne says, "so when they move, it's pretty hard for others not to notice."

A slight smile along with direct eye contact might be an attempt at seduction
Riggio's research suggests that there's a specific type of smile people display when they're trying to act seductive.
He writes in Psychology Today:
"[T]hey typically display positive affect — a slight smile that accompanies direct eye contact, with a slow glance away, but still holding the smile.
"Interestingly, the seductive smile could be accompanied by submissive behavior (tilting the head downward), or dominant behavior — proudly and slowly glancing away."

Psychologist Paul Ekman uses the term "reliable muscles" for the muscles in the face that you can't contract voluntarily.

Inbreeding is common in Islamic culture. It’s been going on since Mohammed sanctioned first-cousin marriages 1,400 years ago. I guess there’s nothing like getting marriage advice handed down from one generation to the next that originated with a lunatic pedophile.
PJ Media reports that because Mohammed encouraged inbreeding, many Muslims regard intermarriage as part of their religion. First-cousin marriages are also viewed as a source of social status, as a means of keeping wealth within the family, and as a form of control. In addition, it is a vehicle to safeguard families against the influence of non-Muslim outsiders, which contributes to insular communities that do not integrate into Western society.
So just how many Muslims are inbred?
A lot.
As written in a seminal report by a Danish psychologist, Nicolai Sennels, “half of the world’s Muslims are inbred as a result of consanguineous marriages.” So we’re talking about one billion inbred Muslims. And rising.
Inbreeding is more common among Muslims living in Islamic countries compared to those living in the West. But even among those in the West, the numbers are shockingly high. Sennels states that more than half the Pakistanis living in the U.K. are married to first cousins. Per an article at Bare Naked Islam, although Pakistanis account for 3% of births in the U.K., they make up 33% of children born with birth defects in the country.
In addition to increased risk of genetic disorders, IQ is negatively affected. Normal IQ averages around 100. “Low intelligence” is set at 85 or 90, mild disability at 70-79, and moderate disability at 50-69.
Studies show that inbred children have an average IQ of 79. One study showed a 400% increased risk for inbred children having an IQ lower than 70. The normal risk for having a child in this IQ range is 1.2%. That risk jumps to 6.2% when children are inbred.
Not surprisingly, children with low IQ are far more likely to drop out of school and have limited job skills, resulting in limited prospects for employment. In addition, inbred individuals are at risk for a wide range of developmental abnormalities that result in poor social skills and lack of empathy, among other things. Inbreeding also results in a significantly higher percentage of still births as well as increased risk of mental illness, including schizophrenia and criminal insanity.
All of these risks intensify as one generation after another inbreeds, compounding genetic abnormalities. And we’re 1,400 years in with no end in sight. That’s 50 generations' worth of inbred Muslims.
When you combine an Islamic “holy book” that teaches hate with rampant inbreeding, there is no doubt that Islamic culture is sub-par (to put it mildly) and not compatible with Western values and modernity. And yet this intellectually, physically, and spiritually compromised population continues to advance around the globe, gaining ground with each passing day.

Confused parents wondering why wheat consumption sometimes triggered autoimmune reactions in their children but not at other times.
In my own home, I’ve long pondered why my husband can eat the wheat I prepare at home, but he experiences negative digestive effects eating even a single roll in a restaurant.
There is clearly something going on with wheat that is not well known by the general public. It goes far and beyond organic versus nonorganic, gluten or hybridization because even conventional wheat triggers no symptoms for some who eat wheat in other parts of the world.
What indeed is going on with wheat?
For quite some time, I secretly harbored the notion that wheat in the United States must, in fact, be genetically modified. GMO wheat secretly invading the North American food supply seemed the only thing that made sense and could account for the varied experiences I was hearing about.
I reasoned that it couldn’t be the gluten or wheat hybridization. Gluten and wheat hybrids have been consumed for thousands of years. It just didn’t make sense that this could be the reason for so many people suddenly having problems with wheat and gluten in general in the past 5-10 years.
Finally, the answer came over dinner a couple of months ago with a friend who was well versed in the wheat production process. I started researching the issue for myself, and was, quite frankly, horrified at what I discovered.
The good news is that the reason wheat has become so toxic in the United States is not because it is secretly GMO as I had feared (thank goodness!).
The bad news is that the problem lies with the manner in which wheat is grown and harvested by conventional wheat farmers.
You’re going to want to sit down for this one. I’ve had some folks burst into tears in horror when I passed along this information before.
Common wheat harvest protocol in the United States is to drench the wheat fields with Roundup several days before the combine harvesters work through the fields as the practice allows for an earlier, easier and bigger harvest.
Pre-harvest application of the herbicide Roundup or other herbicides containing the deadly active ingredient glyphosate to wheat and barley as a desiccant was suggested as early as 1980. It has since become routine over the past 15 years and is used as a drying agent 7-10 days before harvest within the conventional farming community.USDA pesticides applied to wheat
According to Dr. Stephanie Seneff of MIT who has studied the issue in depth and who I recently saw present on the subject at a nutritional Conference in Indianapolis, desiccating non-organic wheat crops with glyphosate just before harvest came into vogue late in the 1990’s with the result that most of the non-organic wheat in the United States is now contaminated with it. Seneff explains that when you expose wheat to a toxic chemical like glyphosate, it actually releases more seeds resulting in a slightly greater yield: “It ‘goes to seed’ as it dies. At its last gasp, it releases the seed” says Dr. Seneff.
According to the US Department of Agriculture, as of 2012, 99% of durum wheat, 97% of spring wheat, and 61% of winter wheat has been treated with herbicides. This is an increase from 88% for durum wheat, 91% for spring wheat and 47% for winter wheat since 1998.
Here’s what wheat farmer Keith Lewis has to say about the practice:
I have been a wheat farmer for 50 yrs and one wheat production practice that is very common is applying the herbicide Roundup (glyposate) just prior to harvest. Roundup is licensed for preharvest weed control. Monsanto, the manufacturer of Roundup claims that application to plants at over 30% kernel moisture result in roundup uptake by the plant into the kernels. Farmers like this practice because Roundup kills the wheat plant allowing an earlier harvest.
A wheat field often ripens unevenly, thus applying Roundup preharvest evens up the greener parts of the field with the more mature. The result is on the less mature areas Roundup is translocated into the kernels and eventually harvested as such.
This practice is not licensed. Farmers mistakenly call it “desiccation.” Consumers eating products made from wheat flour are undoubtedly consuming minute amounts of Roundup. An interesting aside, malt barley which is made into beer is not acceptable in the marketplace if it has been sprayed with preharvest Roundup. Lentils and peas are not accepted in the market place if it was sprayed with preharvest roundup….. but wheat is ok.. This farming practice greatly concerns me and it should further concern consumers of wheat products.
Here’s what wheat farmer Seth Woodland of Woodland and Wheat in Idaho had to say about the practice of using herbicides for wheat dry down:
That practice is bad . I have fellow farmers around me that do it and it is sad. Lucky for you not all of us farm that way. Being the farmer and also the president of a business, we are proud to say that we do not use round up on our wheat ever!
This practice is not just widespread in the United States either. The Food Standards Agency in the United Kingdom reports that use of Roundup as a wheat desiccant results in glyphosate residues regularly showing up in bread samples. Other European countries are waking up to to the danger, however. In the Netherlands, use of Roundup is completely banned with France likely soon to follow.
Using Roundup on wheat crops throughout the entire growing season and even as a desiccant just prior to harvest may save the farmer money and increase profits, but it is devastating to the health of the consumer who ultimately consumes the glyphosate residue laden wheat kernels.
The chart below of skyrocketing applications of glyphosate to US wheat crops since 1990 and the incidence of celiac disease is from a December 2013 study published in the Journal Interdisciplinary Toxicology examining glyphosate pathways to autoimmune disease. Remember that wheat is not currently GMO or “Roundup Ready” meaning it is not resistant to its withering effects like GMO corn or GMO soy, so application of glyphosate to wheat would actually kill it.

While the herbicide industry maintains that glyphosate is minimally toxic to humans, research published in the Journal Entropy strongly argues otherwise by shedding light on exactly how glyphosate disrupts mammalian physiology.
Authored by Anthony Samsel and Stephanie Seneff of MIT, the paper investigates glyphosate’s inhibition of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes, an overlooked component of lethal toxicity to mammals.
The currently accepted view is that ghyphosate is not harmful to humans or any mammals. This flawed view is so pervasive in the conventional farming community that Roundup salesmen have been known to foolishly drink it during presentations!
However, just because Roundup doesn’t kill you immediately doesn’t make it nontoxic. In fact, the active ingredient in Roundup lethally disrupts the all important shikimate pathway found in beneficial gut microbes which is responsible for synthesis of critical amino acids.
Friendly gut bacteria, also called probiotics, play a critical role in human health. Gut bacteria aid digestion, prevent permeability of the gastointestinal tract (which discourages the development of autoimmune disease), synthesize vitamins and provide the foundation for robust immunity. In essence:
Roundup significantly disrupts the functioning of beneficial bacteria in the gut and contributes to permeability of the intestinal wall and consequent expression of autoimmune disease symptoms.
In synergy with disruption of the biosynthesis of important amino acids via the shikimate pathway, glyphosate inhibits the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes produced by the gut microbiome. CYP enzymes are critical to human biology because they detoxify the multitude of foreign chemical compounds, xenobiotics, that we are exposed to in our modern environment today.
As a result, humans exposed to glyphosate through use of Roundup in their community or through ingestion of its residues on industrialized food products become even more vulnerable to the damaging effects of other chemicals and environmental toxins they encounter!
What’s worse is that the negative impact of glyphosate exposure is slow and insidious over months and years as inflammation gradually gains a foothold in the cellular systems of the body.
The consequences of this systemic inflammation are most of the diseases and conditions associated with the Western lifestyle:
Gastrointestinal disorders
Obesity
Diabetes
Heart Disease
Depression
Autism
Infertility
Cancer
Multiple Sclerosis
Alzheimer’s disease
And the list goes on and on and on …
In a nutshell, Dr. Seneff’s study of Roundup’s ghastly glyphosate which the wheat crop in the United States is doused with uncovers the manner in which this lethal toxin harms the human body by decimating beneficial gut microbes with the tragic end result of disease, degeneration, and widespread suffering.

Even if you think you have no trouble digesting wheat, it is still very wise to avoid conventional wheat as much as possible in your diet!
You Must Avoid Toxic Wheat No Matter What
The bottom line is that avoidance of conventional wheat in the United States is absolutely imperative even if you don’t currently have a gluten allergy or wheat sensitivity. The increase in the amount of glyphosate applied to wheat closely correlates with the rise of celiac disease and gluten intolerance. Dr. Seneff points out that the increases in these diseases are not just genetic in nature, but also have an environmental cause as not all patient symptoms are alleviated by eliminating gluten from the diet.
The effects of deadly glyphosate on your biology are so insidious that lack of symptoms today means literally nothing.
If you don’t have problems with wheat now, you will in the future if you keep eating conventionally produced, toxic wheat!
How to Eat Wheat Safely
Obviously, if you’ve already developed a sensitivity or allergy to wheat, you must avoid it. Period.
But, if you aren’t celiac or gluten sensitive and would like to consume this ancestral food safely, you can do what we do in our home. We source organic, naturally low in gluten, unhybridized Einkorn wheat for breadmaking, pancakes, cookies etc. Please note that einkorn is not to be confused with the more general term farro, which includes emmer and spelt, which are both hybridized. When we eat out or are purchasing food from the store, conventional wheat products are rejected without exception. This despite the fact that we have no gluten allergies whatsoever in our home – yet.
I am firmly convinced that if we did nothing, our entire family at some point would develop sensitivity to wheat or autoimmune disease in some form due to the toxic manner in which it is processed and the glyphosate residues that are contained in conventional wheat products.
What Are You Going to Do About Toxic Wheat?
How did you react to the news that US wheat farmers are using Roundup, not just to kill weeds, but to dry out the wheat plants to allow for an earlier, easier and bigger harvest and that such a practice causes absorption of toxic glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup and other herbicides, right into the wheat kernels themselves?

UPDATE: The Soil Association in July 2015 called for an immediate ban on the use of glyphosate for wheat ripening and desiccation purposes. The nonprofit reports that glyphosate residues are widely found in nonorganic wheat samples and the use of the herbicide on wheat crops has increased 400% in the past two decades.
Dr. Robin Mesnage of the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at Kings College in London, revealed new data analysis showing Roundup, the most common brand of Glyphosate based herbicides, is 1,000 times more toxic than genotoxic glyphosate alone due to the inclusion of other toxic chemicals in its mix.
Peter Melchett, Soil Association policy director said; “If Glyphosate ends up in bread it’s impossible for people to avoid it, unless they are eating organic. On the other hand, farmers could easily choose not to use Glyphosate as a spray on wheat crops – just before they are harvested. This is why the Soil Association is calling for the immediate ending of the use of Glyphosate sprays on wheat destined for use in bread.”

'Artificially sweetened sodas, aerated drinks lead to infertility’
With sedentary lifestyle being one of the biggest reasons causing infertility, doctors say consumption of artificially sweetened sodas and aerated drinks may also lead to infertility in humans.
Aerated drinks contain an artificial sweetener, aspartame, which can disrupt the endocrine system leading to hormonal imbalance and infertility issues in women.
“Almost all of the soft drinks and sodas contain aspartame which is linked to many health problems including infertility, malformations and miscarriages,” said Arvind Vaid, an IVF expert at city-based Indira IVF.
“Excess consumption leads to hormonal imbalance and fluctuation that causes ovulatory disorders and even worsens PMS (Premenstrual symptoms),” he added.
Stating that phenylalanine and aspartic acids are the two amino acids present in aspartame considered natural and harmless when eaten in combination with other amino acids, the experts said when they are taken unaccompanied, it stimulates the generation of free radicals which leads to cell death.
“Sperm and ovum, being cells, have 90 per cent chances of dying when this is consumed in excess. It is advised by many doctors and experts to avoid anything that helps in the formation of free radicals in the body for the significance of reproductive health,” said Vaid.
Rachna Jaiswar, associated with Gynaecology Department of Safdarjung Hospital, said consumption of sugary aerated drinks restrains the immune system causing weight gain and hormonal imbalance, which strongly contributes to fertility issues.
“Soda is a highly acidic beverage, which alters the pH level of the body with excess consumption,” said Jaiswar.
Talking about the high consumption of aerated drinks and sodas by men, Jaishwar said due to lack of nutrients in a high pH atmosphere, sperm cells either get harmed leading to its abnormal shape and poor quality or eventually die.
“Moreover Bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical that reduces the male semen quality, is found in the lining of plastic bottles and most canned goods. Men who consume soft drinks more often are at 4 times the risk of lowering their sperm count, motility and concentration,” said Jaiswar.
Doctors also said most of the soft drinks are caffeinated and contain fructose, which are associated with a higher risk of ovulatory disorders and infertility among women.
“Caffeine is known to be a vasoconstrictor that reduces uterine blood flow thereby reducing menstrual bleeding and shortening the duration of menses. Combination of caffeine, aspartame and fructose affects the sex hormones and the hormone receptors, even leading to infertility,” said Radhika Vajpayee, IVF expert based in Lucknow

What Is NAD+, Why Do You Need It, and How Does It Work

You’ve probably heard about something called “NAD+”. It comes up often in discussions about aging and staying healthy as one gets older. But you probably also have a lot of questions.
What is NAD+?
What does NAD+ do?
Why should I take NAD+?
Wait, what does it do again?
It can be really confusing, right? You want to take care of yourself, but you also want to make educated decisions about what you put into your body.
As Joyce Meyer says: “I believe that the greatest gift you can give your family and the world is a healthy you.”
In order to help you be as healthy and educated as possible, we’ve put together this simple guide to NAD+. We’re going to try to answer the basic questions about what it is and what it does. By the end, you’ll have a firm grasp on the subject and be able to make informed decisions regarding NAD+.
What Is NAD+?
Let’s start with the basics. NAD+ stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. The compound is found in every cell in your body and plays a role in regulating how quickly your cells age.
NAD+ also contributes to the transfer of energy from fatty acids and glucose to the mitochondria, which converts them to cellular energy.

Descended from bacteria that colonized other cells about 2 billion years, they get flaky as we age. A prominent theory of aging holds that decaying of mitochondria is a key driver of aging. While it's not clear why our mitochondria fade as we age, evidence suggests that it leads to everything from heart failure to neurodegeneration.
In other words, having healthy mitochondria is really important for your body.
As you get older, your NAD+ levels typically decline, meaning that the energy transfer mentioned above starts faltering. This leads to mitochondrial problems which then cause the symptoms of aging. Remember, bad mitochondria spells the beginning of the end for your body.
NAD+ helps in the battle against aging by activating enzymes called “sirtuins”, which help control your genes in ways that promote healthy aging. The ones of particular interest for this discussion are the sirtuins SIRT1 and SIRT3.
Are you tracking so far? More NAD+ means more activated SIRT1 and SIRT3 enzymes which in turns means healthier mitochondria which means longevity for your body.
And, as your get older, your NAD+ levels will begin falling, leading to less activated sirtuins, which then causes problems with the mitochondria, which then causes your body to get old, your joints to ache, your energy to flag, and your brain to degenerate.
Does NAD+ Prevent Aging?
There is reason to think that NAD+ can at least slow the aging process. Now, to be clear, the research is in the early phases but the results are promising so far.
A recent study was done at Harvard in which mice were bred with a defect in SIRT1. As you might expect, these mice aged rapidly and showed significant problems with their mitochondria.
When these mice were 22 months old, they were given increased levels of NAD+, and the results were marked:
Less insulin resistance
Less inflammation
Less muscle wasting
Suddenly, it appeared that these mice were approximately 6 months old.

This suggests that increasing overall NAD+ levels in humans can potentially slow the aging process and give us more time.
Again, David Stipp helps us understand this in the context of the research:
Recent research suggests it may be possible to reverse mitochondrial decay with dietary supplements that increase cellular levels of a molecule called NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide). But...while there's promising test-tube data and animal research regarding NAD boosters, no human clinical results on them have been published.
In other words, things are looking good for NAD+, but we don’t have all the results in yet. Yes, things definitely improved with the mice, but we need to see more data when this is tested on humans.
No, NAD+ isn’t some sort of fountain of youth that will turn you into an immortal being. But if you can increase the levels of NAD+ in your body, you may be able to stay healthy longer, which could be a huge benefit.
As aging researching Christopher Martens said:
I’m always reluctant to say there’s going to be a miracle molecule that is the next great thing, but NAD seems to be very important.
How Can You Increase NAD+ In Your Body?
There are a number of ways that you may be able to increase NAD+ in you body.
First, you can drink a glass of red wine every night. This actually bypasses the need for NAD+ and works to directly increase SIRT1 levels in your body. You’ve heard doctors recommending a glass of red wine every night? This is why.
But what if you don’t like red wine? Or more specifically, realize that red wine just doesn’t have very much of the compounds we seek and want to take a more direct route?
You could take a resveratrol supplement. Resveratrol is the ingredient in red wine that works to directly increase the SIRT1 levels in your body. If you want to get the effects of red wine without the taste or alcohol, a supplement could be your best bet. You could also consider taking pterostilbene, which is chemically similar to resveratrol and has many of the same potential effects.
Putting yourself on a restricted calorie diet has been shown to increase NAD+ levels in the body. The reason is a bit complex, but has to do with the ratio of NAD+ to other compounds in your body. When you restrict your calories, it allows your body to properly balance this ratio by increasing NAD+ production.
Exercise puts your body in a similar state to calories reduction. It causes a favorable ratio of NAD+ to other compounds in the body.
You could consider taking a supplement such as nicotinamide riboside, which supports healthy NAD+ levels in the body. In fact, all the way back in 1953, the Connecticut State Medical Journal reported that Niacin can help slow and reverse some of the aging process.
Conclusion
Things are looking good for NAD+. If researchers can find ways to dramatically increase the NAD+ levels in humans, much like they did in mice, we may be able to dramatically slow the aging process.
Trying to increase your levels certainly won’t hurt you. And it might just have a big impact on your overall health as you get older.

A seismology study by scientists from Stanford and MIT, published in the journal Science on Friday, finds that if the Big One hits the San Andreas Fault near Palm Springs, some seismic waves will travel near the path of the 10 Freeway into the heart of Los Angeles, where the city and its suburbs will suffer stronger ground motions than previously believed. Downtown L.A. will endure three times the shaking of surrounding areas, scientists now say.
The study shows that a "funneling action" of seismic waves will roll straight into the Los Angeles Basin through a 60-mile-long corridor, striking a 13-million population region that stretches from the Santa Monica Mountains to Newport Bay and inland to the basins of the San Gabriel and Santa Ana rivers. The study confirms a 2006 supercomputer simulation that predicted L.A. could endure worse shaking than long feared. Greg Beroza, a professor at School of Earth Sciences of Stanford University who led the study, explains (See VIDEO below):
The waves travel through that corridor towards Los Angeles, essentially guided into the sedimentary basin that underlies Los Angeles. Once they're in that basin, they reverberate; they get amplified. They cause stronger shaking than would otherwise occur.
Stanford-MIT scientists devised a detailed new computer simulation using data from "omnipresent" waves that continually vibrate beneath Southern California. What they found is not good news for cities that sit atop the vast "sedimentary" L.A. Basin - a huge rock bowl filled with eons of accumulated sand and sediment whose rim is made up of the San Gabriel, Santa Monica and Santa Ana Mountains, the Hollywood Hills and Palos Verdes Peninsula. Says Beroza:
"Our study indicates that high rises in downtown Los Angeles will get more strongly shaken by future earthquakes on the San Andreas Fault because of the wave-guide and basin effects that funnel waves from the San Andreas Fault into the Los Angeles Basin where the waves are trapped and amplified. What this means is that the threat posed by earthquakes to Los Angeles is higher than it would be otherwise because those earthquakes will shake Los Angeles more strongly."
At their deepest point, the L.A. Basin sediments reach more than 30,000 feet into the earth, where they hit solid rock. Mount Everest, positioned upside down, could fit into this bowl.
"Those sediments are not compacted, like sand on the beach," says Marine Denolle, first author of the study, who recently received her PhD in geophysics from Stanford. "They're very compliant. So they can move very easily.
The study says:
Our ground motion predictions show strong seismic amplification in the Los Angeles sedimentary basin compared to surrounding areas...[W]e find seismic amplification in downtown Los Angeles with peak amplitudes up to three times larger than in surrounding areas.
The study used "virtual earthquakes" to predict ground motion. Scientists used data taken of weak vibrations beneath the ground - which are actually generated by the movement of ocean waves and then transmitted into the earth - to construct a major, fake earthquake, according to Denolle.
"Those waves [are] transferred to the sea bottom. These get transmitted to the crust where we actually have instruments recording," says Denolle.
Weak ground vibrations, known as "the ambient seismic field" in geology, are present all the time, but they're so mild that they're unnoticeable. Scientists have known about the ambient seismic field for more than 100 years, but viewed them as interference in their efforts to study earthquakes. Now, with this study, scientists made use of them - as proxies for strong seismic waves created by a big earthquake.
Beroza explains, "Even though billions of times weaker than earthquake waves, they interact with the complex geological structure of the crust just the same way."
In the study, the scientists considered 96 simulated ruptures, or "examples of 96 possible earthquake sources" by selecting different epicenters and rupture speeds on a 40-mile segment of the San Andreas Fault from roughly the junction of 10 Freeway and Highway 111 on the north (San Gorgonio Pass) to where the 10 crosses the fault on the south near Coachella.
Denolle explains in an email:
"We do not know which one actually would occur, so we account for different scenarios to look at an average of all possible scenarios.
"When you drop a rock in flat water, you can see circles moving outward on a growing circle. That's exactly what seismic waves do, they move outward like this. Because the Earth is more complex than water, the circle is not perfect."
Devices placed in the ground for four months along the fault in Palm Springs collected data from the ever-present ground vibrations.
This study confirming the 2006 San Andreas simulation - as well as reports of a new state geological map showing that the separate Hollywood Earthquake Fault runs directly beneath a new luxury complex and under Hollywood's proposed Millennium skyscrapers - prompted one respected geologist to call for major changes at the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety.
Robert H. Sydnor, an engineering geologist who worked for California Geological Survey for 25 years and is a life member of the Seismological Society of America, said via email:
Recent building permits and recent Environmental Impact Reports issued by the City of Los Angeles do not properly characterize the known problem of amplified earthquake ground-motion in Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles.
I have read 2013 official comments from the LA Planning Department that wrongly state that the earthquake ground-motion in Hollywood is no greater than elsewhere in the city. With the active Hollywood Fault cutting right through Hollywood, plus basin-edge amplification effects in strong-motion seismology, these LA City official comments are egregiously false and scientifically wrong.
It is time for a significant internal change within the Department of Building and Safety of the City of Los Angeles. Building permits for multimillion-dollar high-rise structures are being issued by LA City officials who have no understanding of strong-motion seismology, Holocene-active faults, and geologic hazards. This is a significant disservice in public safety.
Sydnor noted that studies on earthquake ground motion in Santa Monica and Los Angeles have been heavily published since the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, which killed 57 people and left more than 9,000 injured.
Beroza leaves Angelenos with this thought:
"I should note that this [the San Andreas Fault] is not the only earthquake threat that Los Angeles faces. There are earthquake faults within Los Angeles that rupture in earthquakes less frequently than the San Andreas Fault, but when they do, they will shake Los Angeles very strongly."

HIV eliminated from ‘humanized’ mice in groundbreaking study
Scientists in the US have successfully eliminated HIV from mice transplanted with infected human immune cells, in the first study to successfully achieve this in an infected animal.
The new study from Temple University and the University of Pittsburgh builds on a previous study from the same team in 2016 in which HIV was eliminated from cells in lab dishes using the gene editing tool Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR).
“Our new study is more comprehensive,” associate professor at the Temple University, Wenhui Hu, who led the study, said in a statement.
“We confirmed the data from our previous work and have improved the efficiency of our gene editing strategy. We also show that the strategy is effective in two additional mouse models, one representing acute infection in mouse cells and the other representing chronic, or latent, infection in human cells.”
CRISPR, described as a “molecular scissors,” eliminated the virus using Ribonucleic acid (RNA) that searches for the HIV virus. Once identified, a special enzyme removed the virus from the cells.
Three “animal models” were tested in the study, including a successful test on a model containing mice transplanted with human immune cells, where HIV can often escape detection.

All healthy persons six months of age and older should get a routine flu shot, according to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). Mounting research, however, systematically proves that the flu shot, otherwise known as the influenza vaccine, doesn’t work and may cause severe damage to the body. Nonetheless, for many Americans, adults and children alike, the flu shot remains a yearly ritual imposed by their doctor, employer, or school.
But how effective, safe, and useful are these yearly vaccines? The flu vaccine is developed months before the start of the flu season to give manufacturers enough time to produce the shot for as many people as possible. Every year scientists predict which three or four strains will be most common and vaccine manufacturers base their annual flu jab on these predictions. Hence why vaccines do not provide maximum protection since other strains may appear throughout the season. This means that even if someone received the shot, there is still a chance that they could get sick.
If you can still get sick, then what’s the point of getting the vaccine in the first place? Even researchers admitted that these jabs don’t decrease the yearly number of influenza infections, yet health authorities and Big Pharma keep pushing them, raising fear among the people while they fill their pockets with a recurring stream of profits.
Vaccines are outdated before the flu season starts
Earlier this month, the University of Ghent, Belgium, released a paper where it accidentally admitted that most flu shots are continuously out of date and therefore don’t work.
“Current flu vaccines are only effective against virus strains that match the vaccine strains. Consequently, the strains in the human flu vaccines are updated every few years, based on recommendations by the World Health Organization,” the press release read.
They are not the only ones to admit that vaccines are a fraud. Previously, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also agreed that the flu shot fails most of the time, as reported by Vaccine Impact. In fact, instead of preventing disease, flu shots can make people more susceptible to disease.
The CDC has promoted the flu vaccine for years, promising that it is effective at preventing illness in 70 to 90 percent of all cases, adding that type A and B influenza cause over 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths in the U.S. every year. In April, however, the CDC had to backtrack and instead had to admit it was wrong.
For years, the CDC guessed these numbers, taking influenza-like illnesses such as pneumonia, respiratory, and circulatory diseases caused by other viruses or bacteria into account. As reported by Vaccine Impact, there were about 37,000 Americans hospitalized for influenza in 2014. This is five times less the number the CDC has been using to create fear and make sure all Americans get their annual injection.
Furthermore, most of the respiratory illnesses during the past two flu seasons were caused by other viruses and bacteria. Only 3 percent and 18 percent were positive for type A or B influenza. Over the years, flu vaccines have failed dramatically. During the flu season of 2004-2005, the flu shot failed 90 percent of the time, while during the 2014-2015 flu season it failed 77 percent of the time. Overall, the CDC publicly admitted in January 2016 that more than half the time, seasonal flu vaccines are less than 50 percent efficient.
Also, why would one need to be vaccinated every single year if the vaccine works? Usually, a vaccine should enable the body to produce its own antibodies to protect against the disease. As reported by Vaccines.news, the industry isn’t looking for long protection. They need a recurring income provided by a weak vaccine that needs to be administered every year.
The sad part is that once again profits are put before people’s health. Since 1945 (when the first influenza vaccine was licensed) doctors have known that flu vaccines don’t work well. This, however, didn’t stop them from telling young and old to get a shot every year.
While doctors have admitted all along that they don’t know much about the virus, they keep pushing these money-generating vaccines onto the public, knowing they may cause inflammation of the nerves, also known as Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and other chronic health problems.

In this paper we present geometry which has been designed to fit a layperson's description of a 'time machine'. It is a box which allows those within it to travel backwards and forwards through time and space, as interpreted by an external observer. If certain timelike observers inside the bubble maintain a persistent acceleration, their worldlines will close.

Not everyone likes to hear about the threat of nuclear war. Some find refuge in denial and say that nuclear war is impossible because it makes no sense. Unfortunately, humankind has a long record of doing things that make no sense.
In previous posts in recent years I have pointed out both written documents and changes in US war doctrine that indicate that Washington is preparing a preemptive nuclear attack on Russia and China. More recently, I have shown that Washington’s demonization of Russia and President Putin, the incessant lies about Russian deeds and intentions, and the refusal of Washington to cooperate with Russia on any issue have convinced the Russian government that Washington is preparing the Western populations for an attack on Russia. It is obvious that China has come to the same conclusion.
It is extremely dangerous to all of mankind for Washington to convince two nuclear powers that Washington is preparing a preemptive nuclear strike against them. It is impossible to imagine a more reckless and irresponsible act. Yet this is precisely what Washington has done.
Lt. Gen. Viktor Poznikhir, Deputy Head of Operations of the Russian General Staff has concluded that Washington in pursuit of global hegemony is implementing an anti-ballistic missile system that Washington believes can prevent a Russian nuclear response to a US pre-emptive attack.

The US military/security complex has clearly prevailed over Trump’s intention to normalize relations between the US and Russia, and anti-Russian venom continues to pour out of NATO and Washington’s European vassal states. With propaganda controlling the explanation, Washington’s aggressive actions are explained as defense against a threat and not as a policy that will end life on earth.
The chances are high that life on earth is approaching its end. The neoconservative claim of American exceptionalism is the identical claim made for Germans by Hitler. If Americans are indispensable, everyone else is dispensable and can be “bombed into the stone age” as one US government official put it, or nuked as Washington intends to do to Russia and China. The claim of American exceptionalism is not accepted by Russia and China. Therefore, the insane, crazed monsters who rule over the West in Washington are bringing life on earth to an end.
And there are no protests. The idiot British, the idiot Germans, the idiot French, Italians, Canadians, Australians, Belgians, Greeks, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, rally behind the insanity that is Washington.

This Physicist Says Consciousness Could Be a New State of Matter -- 'Perceptronium'.
...The hypothesis was first put forward in 2014 by cosmologist and theoretical physicist Max Tegmark from MIT, who proposed that there's a state of matter - just like a solid, liquid, or gas - in which atoms are arranged to process information and give rise to subjectivity, and ultimately, consciousness.
The name of this proposed state of matter? Perceptronium, of course.
As Tegmark explains in his paper, published in the journal Chaos, Solitons & Fractals:
"Generations of physicists and chemists have studied what happens when you group together vast numbers of atoms, finding that their collective behaviour depends on the pattern in which they are arranged: the key difference between a solid, a liquid, and a gas lies not in the types of atoms, but in their arrangement.
"In this paper, I conjecture that consciousness can be understood as yet another state of matter. Just as there are many types of liquids, there are many types of consciousness.
"However, this should not preclude us from identifying, quantifying, modelling, and ultimately understanding the characteristic properties that all liquid forms of matter (or all conscious forms of matter) share."
In other words, Tegmark isn't suggesting that there are physical clumps of perceptronium sitting somewhere in your brain and coursing through your veins to impart a sense of self-awareness.
Rather, he proposes that consciousness can be interpreted as a mathematical pattern - the result of a particular set of mathematical conditions...
The idea was inspired by the work of neuroscientist Giulio Tononi from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, who proposed in 2008 that if you wanted to prove that something had consciousness, you had to demonstrate two specific traits.
According to his integrated information theory (IIT), the first of these traits is that a conscious being must be capable of storing, processing, and recalling large amounts of information.
"And second," explains the arXiv.org blog, "this information must be integrated in a unified whole, so that it is impossible to divide into independent parts."

We examine the hypothesis that consciousness can be understood as a state of matter, "perceptronium", with distinctive information processing abilities. We explore five basic principles that may distinguish conscious matter from other physical systems such as solids, liquids and gases: the information, integration, independence, dynamics and utility principles. If such principles can identify conscious entities, then they can help solve the quantum factorization problem: why do conscious observers like us perceive the particular Hilbert space factorization corresponding to classical space (rather than Fourier space, say), and more generally, why do we perceive the world around us as a dynamic hierarchy of objects that are strongly integrated and relatively independent? Tensor factorization of matrices is found to play a central role, and our technical results include a theorem about
Hamiltonian separability (defined using Hilbert-Schmidt superoperators) being maximized in the energy eigenbasis. Our approach generalizes Giulio Tononi's integrated information framework for neural-network-based consciousness to arbitrary quantum systems, and we find interesting links to error-correcting codes, condensed matter criticality, and the Quantum Darwinism program, as well as an interesting connection between the emergence of consciousness and the emergence of time.

1968 PROPHECY from 90-YEAR-OLD WOMAN in NORWAY

An old woman of 90 from Valdres, Norway had a vision from God in 1968. The evangelist Emanuel Minos had meetings (services) where she lived. He had the opportunity to meet her, and she told him what she had seen. He wrote it down, but thought it to be so unbelievable that he put it in a drawer. After 30 years, he understood he had to share the vision with others.
The woman from Valdres was a very alert, reliable, awake and credible Christian, with a good reputation among all who knew her. This is what she saw:
"I saw the time just before the coming of Jesus and the outbreak of the Third World War. I saw the events with my natural eyes. I saw the world like a kind of a globe and saw Europe, land by land. I saw Scandinavia. I saw Norway. I saw certain things that would take place just before the return of Jesus, and just before the last calamity happens, a calamity the likes of which we have never before experienced.
She mentioned four waves:
1. "First, before Jesus comes and before the Third World War breaks out there will be a 'détente' like we have never had before. There will be peace between the super powers in the east and the west, and there will be a long peace. [Remember, that this was in 1968 when the cold war was at its highest]. In this period of peace there will be disarmament in many countries, also in Norway and we are not prepared when it (the war) comes. The Third World War will begin in a way no one would have anticipated - and from an unexpected place.
2. "A lukewarmness without parallel will take hold of the Christians, a falling away from true, living Christianity. Christians will not be open for penetrating preaching. They will not, like in earlier times, want to hear of sin and grace, law and gospel, repentance and restoration. There will come a substitute instead: prosperity (happiness) Christianity. "The important thing will be to have success, to be something; to have material things, things that God never promised us in this way. Churches and prayer houses will be emptier and emptier. Instead of the preaching we have been used to for generations -like, to take your cross up and follow Jesus, - entertainment, art and culture will invade the churches where there should have been gatherings for repentance and revival. This will increase markedly just before the return of Jesus.
3. "There will be a moral disintegration that old Norway has never experienced the likes of. People will live together like married without being married. Much uncleanness before marriage, and much infidelity in marriage will become the natural and it will be justified from every angle. It will even enter Christian circles and we will let it - even sin against nature. Just before Jesus returns there will be TV- programs like we have never experienced. [TV had just arrived in Norway in 1968] "TV will be filled with such horrible violence that it teaches people to murder and destroy each other, and it will be unsafe in our streets. People will copy what they see. There will not be only one 'station' on TV, it will be filled with 'stations.' [She did not know the word 'channel' which we use today. Therefore she called them stations. -E. Minos.] TV will be just like the radio where we have many 'stations,' and it will be filled with violence. People will use it for entertainment. We will see terrible scenes of murder and destruction one of the other, and this will spread in society. Sex scenes will also be shown on the screen, the most intimate things that take place in a marriage." Then the old woman said: "It will happen, and you will see it. All we have had before will be broken down, and the most indecent things will pass before our eyes."
4. "People from poor countries will stream to Europe. [In 1968 there was no such thing as immigration] They will also come to Scandinavia - and Norway. There will be so many of them that people will begin to dislike them and become hard with them. They will be treated like the Jews before the Second World War. Then the full measure of our sins will have been reached.
The tears streamed from the old woman's eyes down her cheeks. "I will not see it, but you will. Then suddenly, Jesus will come and the Third World War breaks out. It will be a short war." (She saw it in the vision.) "All that I have seen of war before is only child's play compared to this one, and it will be ended with a nuclear atom bomb. The air will be so polluted that one cannot draw one's breath. It will cover several continents, America, Japan, Australia and the wealthy nations. The water will be ruined (contaminated?). We can no longer till the soil. The result will be that only a remnant will remain. The remnant in the wealthy countries will try to flee to the poor countries, but they will be as hard on us as we were on them.
"I am so glad that I will not see it, but when the time draws near, you must take courage and tell this. I have received it from God, and nothing of it goes against what the Bible tells."

Klosin et al. showed that in the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans, exposure to high temperatures led to expression of endogenously repressed copies of genes—sometimes called “junk” DNA. This effect persisted for >10 generations of worms. The changes in chromatin occurred in the early embryo before the onset of transcription and were inherited through eggs and sperm.
Abstract
The environment experienced by an animal can sometimes influence gene expression for one or a few subsequent generations. Here, we report the observation that a temperature-induced change in expression from a Caenorhabditis elegans heterochromatic gene array can endure for at least 14 generations. Inheritance is primarily in cis with the locus, occurs through both oocytes and sperm, and is associated with altered trimethylation of histone H3 lysine 9 (H3K9me3) before the onset of zygotic transcription. Expression profiling reveals that temperature-induced expression from endogenous repressed repeats can also be inherited for multiple generations. Long-lasting epigenetic memory of environmental change is therefore possible in this animal.

Dried plums superior for bone health than dates, figs, raisins, strawberries and apples
Dried plums for bone health and osteoporosis were studied by researchers from Florida State University and Oklahoma State University. For the study, the researchers tested postmenopausal women in two groups over one year.
One group of 55 women consumed the equivalent of 10 plums in dried form (100 grams) per day, while the second group of 45 women consumed an equivalent amount of dried apples. All participants also received 500 mg of calcium per day and 400 mg of vitamin D each day. At the end of the study, the dried plum group was found to have much higher bone density in both the spine and forearm.
Florida State professor and researcher Bahram H. Arjmandi has tested numerous other fruits including dates, figs, raisins and strawberries for their veracity in improving bone health. However, none have come close to the effectiveness of dried plums.

Scientists Cook Up New Kind of Matter: Self-Propelling Liquid

Researchers from the Brandeis University have taken a significant leap in the creation of a new state of matter: a liquid that's able to move on its own without the aid of human action or even gravity.
According to an official report from Brandeis, the team from the university's Materials Research Science and Engineering Center reached a breakthrough in the laboratory when they were able to reproduce a complex series of processes that allows cells to change shape and adapt to the environment. The building blocks of the cell's structure are known as microtubules, which are capable of self-transformation.
For their experiment, the scientists extracted microtubules from a cow's brain and put it in a watery solution, adding kinesine and adenosine triphospohate (ATP), two other cellular molecules. The kinesin molecule linked the microtubules, which aligned with each other.
Meanwhile, the ATP operated as a fuel source so the kinesin was able to self-propel. The microtubules split apart as the molecule's top and bottom went in opposite directions. Then new kinesin linked two different microtubules together, starting the cycle over and over again.
This process caused swirling patterns to appear in the solutions, and the team succeeded in getting the swirls to move in the same direction. It's a simplified version of the same action that occurs in cells.
"Oddly, this behavior was independent of scale; as long as the aspect ratio of the geometry was chosen appropriately, flows were observed for a wide range of system dimensions," the researchers noted in their study.
The potential of a self-propelling liquid has a number of real world applications. One major innovation that could benefit from this recent breakthrough is getting oil to flow through a pipeline without the need for pumping.

The transport of ordinary fluids tends to be driven by pressure differentials, whereas for active or biological matter, transport may be isotropic or governed by the presence of specific chemical gradients. Wu et al. analyzed the emergence of spontaneous directional flows in active fluids containing a suspension of microtubules and clusters of the molecular motor kinesin, confined in a variety of microfluidic geometries (see the Perspective by Morozov). When confined in periodic toroidal channels and cylindrical domains, the flow was organized and persisted in a unidirectional motion, either clockwise or counterclockwise. Oddly, this behavior was independent of scale; as long as the aspect ratio of the geometry was chosen appropriately, flows were observed for a wide range of system dimensions.
Abstract
Transport of fluid through a pipe is essential for the operation of macroscale machines and microfluidic devices. Conventional fluids only flow in response to external pressure. We demonstrate that an active isotropic fluid, composed of microtubules and molecular motors, autonomously flows through meter-long three-dimensional channels. We establish control over the magnitude, velocity profile, and direction of the self-organized flows and correlate these to the structure of the extensile microtubule bundles. The inherently three-dimensional transition from bulk-turbulent to confined-coherent flows occurs concomitantly with a transition in the bundle orientational order near the surface and is controlled by a scale-invariant criterion related to the channel profile. The nonequilibrium transition of confined isotropic active fluids can be used to engineer self-organized soft machines.
INTRODUCTION
Conventional nonequilibrium systems are composed of inanimate components whose dynamics is powered by the external input of energy. For example, in a turbulent fluid, energy cascades down many length scales before being dissipated. In comparison, diverse nonequilibrium processes in living organisms are powered at the microscopic scale by energy-transducing molecular processes. Energy injected at the smallest scales cascades up many levels of structural organization, collectively driving dynamics of subcellular organelles, cells, tissues, and entire organisms. However, the fundamental principles by which animate components self-organize into active materials and machines capable of producing macroscopic work remain unknown. Elucidating these rules would not only provide insight into organization processes that take place in living matter but might lay the foundation for the engineering of self-organized machines composed of energy-consuming animate components that are capable of mimicking the properties of the living matter.
METHODS
We studied isotropic active fluids composed of filamentous microtubules, clusters of kinesin molecular motors, and depleting polymers. The polymer bundles microtubules, whereas the adenosine triphosphate (ATP)–fueled motion of kinesin clusters powers their extension. The extensile bundles consist of oppositely aligned polar microtubules and thus have quadrupolar (nematic) symmetry. They generate local active stresses that collectively drive mesoscale turbulent-like dynamics of bulk active fluids. Upon ATP depletion, the motion of microscopic motors grinds to a halt; the turbulent-like dynamics of active fluids ceases, and one recovers the behavior of conventional gels. We confined such active isotropic fluids into three-dimensional (3D) toroids, disks, and other complex geometries whose dimensions’ range from micrometers to meters and studied their self-organized dynamics. Using particle tracking and image analysis, we simultaneously quantified the flow of the background fluid and the structure of the active microtubule network that drives such fluid flows.
RESULTS
We demonstrate that 3D confinements and boundaries robustly transform turbulent-like dynamics of bulk active fluids into self-organized coherent macroscopic flows that persist on length scales ranging from micrometers to meters and time scales of hours. The transition from turbulent to a coherently circulating state is not determined by an inherent length scale of the active fluid but is rather controlled by a universal criterion that is related to the aspect ratio of the confining channel. Coherent flows robustly form in channels with square-like profiles and disappear as the confining channels become too thin and wide or too tall and narrow. Consequently, this transition to coherent flows is an intrinsically 3D phenomenon that is impossible in systems with reduced dimensionality. For toroids whose channel width is much smaller than the outer radius, the coherent flows assume a Poiseuille-like velocity profile. As the channel width becomes comparable with that of the toroid outer diameter, the time-averaged flow velocity profile becomes increasingly asymmetric. For disk-like confinements, the inner two thirds of the fluid assumes rotation dynamics that is similar to that of a solid body. Analysis of the microtubule network structure reveals that the transition to coherent flows is accompanied by the increase in the thickness of the nematic layer that wets the confining surfaces. The spatial variation of the nematic layer can be correlated to the velocity profiles of the self-organized flows. In mirror-symmetric geometries, the coherent flows can have either handedness. Ratchet-like chiral geometries establish geometrical control over the flow direction.
DISCUSSION
Thousands of nanometer-sized molecular motors collectively generate a gradient in active stress, which powers fluid flow over meter scales. Our findings illustrate the essential role of boundaries in organizing the dynamics of active matter. In contrast to equilibrium systems in which boundaries are a local perturbation, in microtubule-based active fluid the influence of boundaries propagates across the entire system, regardless of its size. Our experiments also demonstrate that active isotropic fluids with apolar symmetry can generate large-scale motion and flows. From a technology perspective, self-pumping active fluids set the stage for the engineering of soft self-organized machines that directly transform chemical energy into mechanical work. From a biology perspective, our results provide insight into collective many-body cellular phenomena such as cytoplasmic streaming, in which molecular motors generate local active stresses that power coherent flows of the entire cytoplasm, enhancing the nutrient transport that is essential for the development and survival of many organisms.

This was Aratta, recorded in the Sumerian epic tale Enmerkar and the Land of Aratta. This was the cradle of civilisation and Kamyana Mohyla was its most significant sanctuary. This is a very special place. It is the oldest known sanctuary-observatory in the world.
Aratta is now recognised as having been the world's most ancient (known) civilisation. It developed in the steppes north of the Black Sea (in modern Ukraine) long before the Sumerian civilisation originated, and from there it radiated its culture into India, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Western China and across Europe. Relics of Aratta are increasingly identified in Ukraine.

Making Batteries From Waste Glass Bottles
Researchers at the University of California, Riverside’s Bourns College of Engineering have used waste glass bottles and a low-cost chemical process to create nanosilicon anodes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries. The batteries will extend the range of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and provide more power with fewer charges to personal electronics like cell phones and laptops.
Titled “Silicon Derived from Glass Bottles as Anode Materials for Lithium Ion Full Cell Batteries,” an article describing the research was published today in the Nature journal Scientific Reports. Cengiz Ozkan, professor of mechanical engineering, and Mihri Ozkan, professor of electrical engineering, led the project.
Even with today’s recycling programs, billions of glass bottles end up in landfills every year, prompting the researchers to ask whether silicon dioxide in waste beverage bottles could provide high purity silicon nanoparticles for lithium-ion batteries.
Silicon anodes can store up to 10 times more energy than conventional graphite anodes, but expansion and shrinkage during charge and discharge make them unstable. Downsizing silicon to the nanoscale has been shown to reduce this problem, and by combining an abundant and relatively pure form of silicon dioxide and a low-cost chemical reaction, the researchers created lithium-ion half-cell batteries that store almost four times more energy than conventional graphite anodes.
To create the anodes, the team used a three-step process that involved crushing and grinding the glass bottles into a fine white power, a magnesiothermic reduction to transform the silicon dioxide into nanostructured silicon, and coating the silicon nanoparticles with carbon to improve their stability and energy storage properties.
As expected, coin cell batteries made using the glass bottle-based silicon anodes greatly outperformed traditional batteries in laboratory tests. Carbon-coated glass derived-silicon (gSi@C) electrodes demonstrated excellent electrochemical performance with a capacity of ~1420 mAh/g at C/2 rate after 400 cycles.
Changling Li, a graduate student in materials science and engineering and lead author on the paper, said one glass bottle provides enough nanosilicon for hundreds of coin cell batteries or three-five pouch cell batteries.
“We started with a waste product that was headed for the landfill and created batteries that stored more energy, charged faster, and were more stable than commercial coin cell batteries. Hence, we have very promising candidates for next-generation lithium-ion batteries,” Li said.
This research is the latest in a series of projects led by Mihri and Cengiz Ozkan to create lithium-ion battery anodes from environmentally friendly materials. Previous research has focused on developing and testing anodes from portabella mushrooms, sand, and diatomaceous (fossil-rich) earth.

Every year many tons of waste glass end up in landfills without proper recycling, which aggravates the burden of waste disposal in landfill. The conversion from un-recycled glass to favorable materials is of great significance for sustainable strategies. Recently, silicon has been an exceptional anode material towards large-scale energy storage applications, due to its extraordinary lithiation capacity of 3579?mAh g-1 at ambient temperature. Compared with other quartz sources obtained from pre-leaching processes which apply toxic acids and high energy-consuming annealing, an interconnected silicon network is directly derived from glass bottles via magnesiothermic reduction. Carbon-coated glass derived-silicon (gSi@C) electrodes demonstrate excellent electrochemical performance with a capacity of ~1420?mAh g-1 at C/2 after 400 cycles. Full cells consisting of gSi@C anodes and LiCoO2 cathodes are assembled and achieve good initial cycling stability with high energy density....

Mesons from Laser-Induced Processes in Ultra-Dense Hydrogen H(0)

Abstract
Large signals of charged light mesons are observed in the laser-induced particle flux from ultra-dense hydrogen H(0) layers. The mesons are formed in such layers on metal surfaces using < 200 mJ laser pulse-energy. The time variation of the signal to metal foil collectors and the magnetic deflection to a movable pin collector are now studied. Relativistic charged particles with velocity up to 500 MeV u-1 thus 0.75 c are observed. Characteristic decay time constants for meson decay are observed, for charged and neutral kaons and also for charged pions. Magnetic deflections agree with charged pions and kaons. Theoretical predictions of the decay chains from kaons to muons in the particle beam agree with the results. Muons are detected separately by standard scintillation detectors in laser-induced processes in ultra-dense hydrogen H(0) as published previously. The muons formed do not decay appreciably within the flight distances used here. Most of the laser-ejected particle flux with MeV energy is not deflected by the magnetic fields and is thus neutral, either being neutral kaons or the ultra-dense HN(0) precursor clusters. Conclusions
Mesons with different velocities are generated by the laser-induced nuclear processes in ultra-dense hydrogen D(0) and p(0). The highest velocities observed are in the range 0.6–0.75 c. Both charged kaons and pions are frequently observed from their decay time constants, while the neutral long-lived kaon with its longer decay-time is less frequently observed in the present experiments. It is probably observed as a long-lived foil-penetrating neutral particle, and it may be a large part of the neutral flux which is the main fast particle flux from the laser-induced nuclear processes. The magnetic deflection experiments give strong evidence for fast charged kaons and pions. Heavier or lighter particles cannot give the observed deflections.

A chemistry professor has just found a way to trigger the process of photosynthesis in a synthetic material, turning greenhouse gases into clean air and producing energy all at the same time.
The process has great potential for creating a technology that could significantly reduce greenhouse gases linked to climate change, while also creating a clean way to produce energy.
“This work is a breakthrough,” said UCF Assistant Professor Fernando Uribe-Romo. “Tailoring materials that will absorb a specific color of light is very difficult from the scientific point of view, but from the societal point of view we are contributing to the development of a technology that can help reduce greenhouse gases.”
The findings of his research are published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A .
Uribe-Romo and his team of students created a way to trigger a chemical reaction in a synthetic material called metal–organic frameworks (MOF) that breaks down carbon dioxide into harmless organic materials. Think of it as an artificial photosynthesis process similar to the way plants convert carbon dioxide (CO2) and sunlight into food. But instead of producing food, Uribe-Romo’s method produces solar fuel.
It’s something scientists around the world have been pursuing for years, but the challenge is finding a way for visible light to trigger the chemical transformation. Ultraviolet rays have enough energy to allow the reaction in common materials such as titanium dioxide, but UVs make up only about 4 percent of the light Earth receives from the sun. The visible range – the violet to red wavelengths – represent the majority of the sun’s rays, but there are few materials that pick up these light colors to create the chemical reaction that transforms CO2 into fuel.
Researchers have tried it with a variety of materials, but the ones that can absorb visible light tend to be rare and expensive materials such as platinum, rhenium and iridium that make the process cost-prohibitive.
Uribe-Romo used titanium, a common nontoxic metal, and added organic molecules that act as light-harvesting antennae to see if that configuration would work. The light harvesting antenna molecules, called N-alkyl-2-aminoterephthalates, can be designed to absorb specific colors of light when incorporated in the MOF. In this case he synchronized it for the color blue.
His team assembled a blue LED photoreactor to test out the hypothesis. Measured amounts of carbon dioxide were slowly fed into the photoreactor — a glowing blue cylinder that looks like a tanning bed — to see if the reaction would occur. The glowing blue light came from strips of LED lights inside the chamber of the cylinder and mimic the sun’s blue wavelength.
It worked and the chemical reaction transformed the CO2 into two reduced forms of carbon, formate and formamides (two kinds of solar fuel) and in the process cleaning the air.
“The goal is to continue to fine-tune the approach so we can create greater amounts of reduced carbon so it is more efficient,” Uribe-Romo said.
He wants to see if the other wavelengths of visible light may also trigger the reaction with adjustments to the synthetic material. If it works, the process could be a significant way to help reduce greenhouse gases.
“The idea would be to set up stations that capture large amounts of CO2, like next to a power plant. The gas would be sucked into the station, go through the process and recycle the greenhouse gases while producing energy that would be put back into the power plant.”
Perhaps someday homeowners could purchase rooftop shingles made of the material, which would clean the air in their neighborhood while producing energy that could be used to power their homes.
“That would take new technology and infrastructure to happen,” Uribe-Romo said. “But it may be possible.”
Other members of the team who worked on the paper include UCF graduate student Matt Logan, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in chemistry, and undergraduate student Jeremy Adamson, who is majoring in biomedical sciences. Kenneth Hanson and his research group at Florida State University helped interpret the results of the experiments.

Systematic variation of the optical bandgap in titanium based isoreticular metal–organic frameworks for photocatalytic reduction of CO2 under blue lightAbstract

A series of metal–organic frameworks isoreticular to MIL-125-NH2 were prepared, where the 2-amino-terephthalate organic links feature N-alkyl groups of increasing chain length (from methyl to heptyl) and varying connectivity (primary and secondary). The prepared materials display reduced optical bandgaps correlated with the inductive donor ability of the alkyl substituent as well as high photocatalytic activity towards the reduction of carbon dioxide under blue illumination operating over 120 h. Secondary N-alkyl substitution (isopropyl, cyclopentyl and cyclohexyl) exhibits larger apparent quantum yields than the primary N-alkyl analogs directly related to their longer lived excited-state lifetime. In particular, MIL-125-NHCyp (Cyp = cyclopentyl) exhibits a small bandgap (Eg = 2.30 eV), a long-lived excited-state (t = 68.8 ns) and a larger apparent quantum yield (Fapp = 1.80%) compared to the parent MIL-125-NH2 (Eg = 2.56 eV, Fapp = 0.31%, t = 12.8 ns), making it a promising candidate for the next generation of photocatalysts for solar fuel production based on earth-abundant elements.
