New Chewing Gum Can Prevent Tooth Decay
    A new chewing gum containing good bacteria which prevent harmful bacteria from destroying our teeth has been developed ...
The bacteria is called Lactobacillus, and is usually found in yoghurt. The scientists discovered a new strain, called L. anti-caries.
    Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), a harmful type of bacteria, sticks to the surface of the teeth and converts sugar into acids which eat away at the enamel. L. anti-caries makes S. mutans clump together so that it cannot stick to your teeth.
    BASF researchers say tests have shown their chewing gum managed to reduce S. mutans levels in the mouth to one-fiftieth of what they were. The company hopes to have the first oral hygiene products containing L. anti-caries on the market next year. Stefan Marcinowski, Executive Director of Research, BASF, did not say whether the products would first appear as chewing gums, toothpastes or mouthwashes.

Here we extend Raman lasers1,2,3 to rely on capillary waves, which are unique to the liquid phase of matter and relate to the attraction between intimate fluid particles. We fabricate resonators that co-host capillary4 and optical modes5, control them to operate at their non-resolved sideband and observe stimulated capillary scattering and the coherent excitation of capillary resonances at kilohertz rates (which can be heard in audio files recorded by us). By exchanging energy between electromagnetic and capillary waves, we bridge the interfacial tension phenomena at the liquid phase boundary to optics. This approach may impact optofluidics by allowing optical control, interrogation and cooling of water waves.

A new material that stiffens 1,800-fold when exposed to heat could protect motorcyclists and racecar drivers during accidents.
The gel quickly becomes rigid and opaque when heated to 60°C, becoming strong enough to support the 10kg weight.
The team developed an inexpensive, non-toxic polyacrylic gel based on this concept. A polyelectrolyte poly (acrylic acid) (PAAc) was immersed in a calcium acetate aqueous solution. PAAc on its own acts like any other polymer-based material and softens when heated. But when calcium acetate is added, PAAc’s side residues interact with the calcium acetate molecules, in a way similar to what happens inside thermophile proteins, causing PAAc to act very differently.
The team found that their originally uniform gel separates into a polymer dense “phase” and a polymer sparse one as the temperature rises. When it reaches to a critical temperature, in this case around 60°C, the dense phase undergoes significant dehydration which strengthens ionic bonds and hydrophobic interactions between polymer molecules. This causes the material to rapidly transform from a soft, transparent hydrogel to a rigid, opaque plastic.
The heated material was 1,800 times stiffer, 80 times stronger, and 20 times tougher than the original hydrogel. The soft-to-rigid switching was completely reversible by alternatively heating and cooling the material. Moreover, the scientists could fine-tune the switching temperature by adjusting the concentration of the ingredients.
They then demonstrated a possible application of the material by combining it with a woven glass fabric. Polyelectrolytes induce water-water correlations that result in dramatic viscosity changes and nuclear quantum effects

Abstract -- Ions interact with water via short-ranged ion-dipole interactions. Recently, an additional unexpected long-ranged interaction was found: The total electric field of ions influences water-water correlations over tens of hydration shells, leading to the Jones Ray effect, a 0.3% surface tension depression. Here, we report such long-range interactions contributing substantially to both molecular and macroscopic properties. Femtosecond elastic second harmonic scattering (fs-ESHS) shows that long-range electrostatic interactions are remarkably strong in aqueous polyelectrolyte solutions, leading to an increase in water-water correlations. This increase plays a role in the reduced viscosity, which changes more than two orders of magnitude with polyelectrolyte concentration. Using D2O instead of H2O shifts both the fs-ESHS and the viscosity curve by a factor of ~10 and reduces the maximum viscosity value by 20 to 300%, depending on the polyelectrolyte. These phenomena cannot be explained using a mean-field approximation of the solvent and point to nuclear quantum effects.

Mechanism and scaling of wing tone generation in mosquitoes

Abstract
The generation of sound from flapping (i.e. wing tones) of mosquito (Culex) wings is investigated using computational modeling. The flow field around the wing is simulated by solving the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations using a sharp-interface immersed boundary method, and the aeroacoustic sound is predicted by the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings equation using data from the aerodynamic simulations. In addition to the aerodynamics, the characteristics of mosquito's wing tone, spectral directivity patterns, and generation mechanisms are investigated. The effects of wing-beat frequency and stroke amplitude are also studied, and scaling analysis for the mean lift, mechanical power, and overall wing tone sound power are performed to understand the effects of the wing shape and kinematics parameters. The analysis shows that the high wing aspect-ratio, high wing beat frequency, and small stroke amplitude adopted by mosquitoes enable efficient generation of high-intensity wing-tones for acoustic communications. The present findings may also apply to the optimized noise control in the flapping-wing micro air vehicles (FWMAV).

A cephalopod-inspired combustion powered hydro-jet engine using soft actuators

Abstract -- Combustion in soft and compliant materials may enable new methods for underwater locomotion. Inspired by the motion of the soft bodied cephalopods, we developed a combustion-powered hydro-jet engine (CPHJE) using an expandable silicone bladder. The CPHJE used high energy density methane combustion to expand a silicone bladder and accelerate water into a hydro-jet that propelled the CPHJE. Cephalopods demonstrate the epitome of underwater soft robot capabilities. Their use of hydrojetting as a mode of high-speed underwater motion resembles high-power combustion events. This paper describes a soft combustion engine that propels a 0.7 kg body, with hydrodynamic surfaces in the likeness of an ellipsoid shaped squid, at instantaneous velocities of at least 0.8 m s−1 and single-pulse average velocities of 0.1 m s−1. High-speed videography informs a model for the CPHJE’s motion in time; the imaging also reveals that the hydrojetting generates a ring vortex. Tracking of this vortex results in an estimate that the working fluid is ejected in excess of 6.7 m s−1. We demonstrate the CPHJE motion is both repeatable and able to produce multiple actuations with the same bladder. These results demonstrate a new method of underwater propulsion using combustion in soft and compliant bladders.

Abstract
Adult mammalian central nervous system axons have intrinsically poor regenerative capacity, so axonal injury has permanent consequences. One approach to enhancing regeneration is to increase the axonal supply of growth molecules and organelles. We achieved this by expressing the adaptor molecule Protrudin which is normally found at low levels in non-regenerative neurons. Elevated Protrudin expression enabled robust central nervous system regeneration both in vitro in primary cortical neurons and in vivo in the injured adult optic nerve. Protrudin overexpression facilitated the accumulation of endoplasmic reticulum, integrins and Rab11 endosomes in the distal axon, whilst removing Protrudin’s endoplasmic reticulum localization, kinesin-binding or phosphoinositide-binding properties abrogated the regenerative effects. These results demonstrate that Protrudin promotes regeneration by functioning as a scaffold to link axonal organelles, motors and membranes, establishing important roles for these cellular components in mediating regeneration in the adult central nervous system.

Passive thermal management strategies show a lot of promise to alleviate the ever-increasing global energy demand for cooling, which is projected to triple by 2050. Passive cooling also provides viable pathways for distribution and storage of food and pharmaceuticals in underdeveloped areas, given that >10% of the world’s population still has no access to electricity. Due to the ease of implementation and potential high cooling powers, evaporative cooling has emerged as one of the most promising passive cooling solutions. However, state-of-the-art evaporative cooling technologies are largely limited by environmental heating. In this work, we address this critical challenge with a transparent bilayer made of hydrogels and aerogels, which allows for evaporative cooling and at the same time cuts parasitic heat gain. Our bilayer cooling structure can significantly increase the effective cooling time by 400% compared with a conventional single-layer design.
Summary
Hydrogel-based evaporative cooling, which mimics perspiration of mammals, provides great potential to reduce energy consumption for thermal regulation. Yet, environmental heat gain presents a critical challenge to this cooling strategy at sub-ambient temperatures. Herein, inspired by the fur layer of desert animals, we propose an evaporation-insulation cooling design based on hydrogels and aerogels. Our transparent bilayer structure relies on water evaporation from hydrogels through highly porous aerogels that are of ultralow thermal conductivity and minimize heating from the surroundings. Consequently, this bilayer design allows for optimization between the temperature drop from the ambient and the effective cooling time, which we demonstrated through both modeling and experiments. We show that our hydrogel-aerogel structure can extend the lifetime of the cooling package by 400% compared with the conventional single-layer design. We further provide design guidelines for various cooling applications, including thermal regulation of food, pharmaceuticals, and buildings.

Effects of ozone nano-bubble water on mucositis induced by cancer chemotherapy
Abstract -- No effective, reliable treatment for stomatitis associated with cancer therapy has been established. This study focused on the its effectiveness of ozone nano-bubble water (ONBW) for the treatment of chemotherapy-induced stomatitis. Oral mucositis was induced in 14-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats (N = 21). The animals were randomly divided into 3 groups: 7 without treatment (control); 7 treated with physiological salt solution (saline); and 7 treated with ONBW. Animals were weighed on Days 7, 9, 11, and 16. Stomatitis grade evaluation and bacterial count measurements were performed before rinsing in all animals 3, 5, and 10 days after acetic acid irritation (Days 9, 11, and 17 respectively). Weight loss after stomatitis creation was observed in all groups, with significant differences between the control and ONBW groups and between the saline and ONBW groups on Day 16. The stomatitis grade did not worsen during the experimental period in any group, with the lowest grades in the ONBW group on Days 11 and 16. Significant differences were identified between the control and ONBW groups and between the saline and ONBW groups on Days 11 and 16. Oral bacterial counts tended to decrease over time in all three groups, with the greatest decrease in the ONBW group, followed by the saline group. The decrease in the bacterial count was steepest in the ONBW group. Rinsing out the oral cavity with ONBW decreased bacterial counts and encouraged the healing of oral chemotherapy-induced stomatitis. Abstract -- Aging is a predominant risk factor for several chronic diseases that limit healthspan1. Mechanisms of aging are thus increasingly recognized as potential therapeutic targets. Blood from young mice reverses aspects of aging and disease across multiple tissues2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, which supports a hypothesis that age-related molecular changes in blood could provide new insights into age-related disease biology. We measured 2,925 plasma proteins from 4,263 young adults to nonagenarians (18–95 years old) and developed a new bioinformatics approach that uncovered marked non-linear alterations in the human plasma proteome with age. Waves of changes in the proteome in the fourth, seventh and eighth decades of life reflected distinct biological pathways and revealed differential associations with the genome and proteome of age-related diseases and phenotypic traits. This new approach to the study of aging led to the identification of unexpected signatures and pathways that might offer potential targets for age-related diseases.

A large fraction of the world’s population still lacks access to electricity, particularly at night when photovoltaic systems no longer operate. The ability to generate electricity at night could be a fundamentally enabling capability for a wide range of applications, including lighting and low-power sensors. Here, we demonstrate a low-cost strategy to harness the cold of space through radiative cooling to generate electricity with an off-the-shelf thermoelectric generator. Unlike traditional thermoelectric generators, our device couples the cold side of the thermoelectric module to a sky-facing surface that radiates heat to the cold of space and has its warm side heated by the surrounding air, enabling electricity generation at night. We experimentally demonstrate 25 mW/m 2 of power generation and validate a model that accurately captures the device’s performance. Abstract
Understanding the degree to which human facial expressions co-vary with specific social contexts across cultures is central to the theory that emotions enable adaptive responses to important challenges and opportunities1,2,3,4,5,6. Concrete evidence linking social context to specific facial expressions is sparse and is largely based on survey-based approaches, which are often constrained by language and small sample sizes7,8,9,10,11,12,13. Here, by applying machine-learning methods to real-world, dynamic behaviour, we ascertain whether naturalistic social contexts (for example, weddings or sporting competitions) are associated with specific facial expressions14 across different cultures. In two experiments using deep neural networks, we examined the extent to which 16 types of facial expression occurred systematically in thousands of contexts in 6 million videos from 144 countries. We found that each kind of facial expression had distinct associations with a set of contexts that were 70% preserved across 12 world regions. Consistent with these associations, regions varied in how frequently different facial expressions were produced as a function of which contexts were most salient. Our results reveal fine-grained patterns in human facial expressions that are preserved across the modern world.

Highly Conductive and Scalable Ti3C2Tx-Coated Fabrics for Efficient Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Abstract -- As an increasing number of wireless devices are introduced to our daily lives, long-term environmentally stable conductive fabrics that can shield against electromagnetic radiation are increasingly desired. Herein, conventional cotton and linen fabrics were dip-coated in additive-free, aqueous Ti3C2Tx MXene dyes, which consist of only two-dimensional Ti3C2Tx flakes dispersed in water, to fabricate highly conductive fabrics for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. Ti3C2Tx loading and electrical conductivity of the fabrics increased with the number of dip-coating cycles. After only 4 dip-coating cycles, EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of Ti3C2Tx-coated (<15 wt.%) cotton and linen fabrics reached ∼40 dB over the X-band range. After 24 dip-coating cycles, the total EMI SE was increased to ∼80 dB in Ti3C2Tx-coated cotton (54 wt.%) and linen (48 wt.%) fabrics, which is higher than commercial metal-based conductive fabrics tested in this study. The average EMI SE performance of Ti3C2Tx-coated cotton and linen fabrics only decreased by ∼8% and ∼13%, respectively, after storage under ambient conditions for two years. This work suggests an attractive alternative to current metal-based conductive dyes and provides valuable insights into development of environmentally stable wearable EMI shielding materials.

Abstract -- With increased life expectancy age-associated cognitive decline becomes a growing concern, even in the absence of recognizable neurodegenerative disease. The integrated stress response (ISR) is activated during aging and contributes to age-related brain phenotypes. We demonstrate that treatment with the drug-like small-molecule ISR inhibitor ISRIB reverses ISR activation in the brain, as indicated by decreased levels of activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) and phosphorylated eukaryotic translation initiation factor eIF2. Furthermore, ISRIB treatment reverses spatial memory deficits and ameliorates working memory in old mice. At the cellular level in the hippocampus, ISR inhibition i) rescues intrinsic neuronal electrophysiological properties, ii) restores spine density and iii) reduces immune profiles, specifically interferon and T cell-mediated responses. Thus, pharmacological interference with the ISR emerges as a promising intervention strategy for combating age-related cognitive decline in otherwise healthy individuals.

While conventional confocal microscope measures reflection signal only at the focal point of illumination and discard all out of focus light, the reflection matrix microscope records all the scattered photons at positions other than the focal point. The scattered photons are then computationally corrected using a novel AO algorithm called closed-loop accumulation of single scattering (CLASS), which the team developed back in 2017. The algorithm exploits all scattered light to selectively extract ballistic light and correct severe optical aberration. Compared to the most conventional AO microscopy systems, which require bright point-like reflectors or fluorescent objects as guide stars similarly to the use of AO in astronomy, the reflection matrix microscope works without any fluorescent labeling and without depending on the target’s structures. Abstract -- In this study, the antifungal activity of AgNPs was tested against C. tropicalis (pathogen fungi) and S. boulardii (probiotic). The effectiveness of the AgNPs was assessed by comparing their antifungal activity with a triazole antifungal drug fluconazole and amphotericin B. The AgNPs have a polygonal-like shape (average size of 35 ± 15 nm) with 1.2% wt. of metallic silver stabilized with 18.8% wt. of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in 80% wt. of distilled water. The results revealed that 35 μg/mL of fluconazole inhibits 55–60% of both fungal cell growth. As for amphotericin B, 5 μg/mL is sufficient to inhibit more than 95% of both fungal cells. For AgNPs, 25 μg/mL was needed to inhibit 90% of the C. tropicalis cell growth, but remarkably, 50% of the S. boulardii cell population remains viable, which can potentiate cell reproduction. Our results could initiate the development of AgNPs possessing selective specificity against pathogenic fungal species.

Here we report contactless H2 production via water electrolysis mediated by the microwave-triggered redox activation of solid-state ionic materials at low temperatures (<250 °C). Water was reduced via reaction with non-equilibrium gadolinium-doped CeO2 that was previously in situ electrochemically deoxygenated by the sole application of microwaves. The microwave-driven reduction was identified by an instantaneous electrical conductivity rise and O2 release. This process was cyclable, whereas H2 yield and energy efficiency were material- and power-dependent. Deoxygenation of low-energy molecules (H2O or CO2) led to the formation of energy carriers and enabled CH4 production when integrated with a Sabatier reactor. This method could be extended to other reactions such as intensified hydrocarbons synthesis or oxidation.

Researchers identify positive effector behind reduced food intake
Reduced food intake, known as dietary restriction, leads to a longer lifespan in many animals and can improve health in humans. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the positive effects of dietary restriction are still unclear. Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing have now found one possible explanation in fruit flies: they identified a protein named Sestrin that mediates the beneficial effects of dietary restriction. By increasing the amount of Sestrin in flies, researchers were able to extend their lifespan and at the same time these flies were protected against the lifespan-shortening effects of a protein-rich diet. The researchers could further show that Sestrin plays a key role in stem cells in the fly gut thereby improving the health of the fly.
The health benefits of dietary restriction have long been known. Recently, it has become clear that restriction of certain food components, especially proteins and their individual building blocks, the amino acids, is more important for the organism's response to dietary restriction than general calorie reduction. On the molecular level, one particular well-known signalling pathway, named TOR pathway, is important for longevity.

Abstract -- Apoptosis, the cell’s natural mechanism for death, is a promising target for anticancer therapy. Both the intrinsic and extrinsic pathways use caspases to carry out apoptosis through the cleavage of hundreds of proteins. In cancer, the apoptotic pathway is typically inhibited through a wide variety of means including overexpression of antiapoptotic proteins and under-expression of proapoptotic proteins. Many of these changes cause intrinsic resistance to the most common anticancer therapy, chemotherapy. Promising new anticancer therapies are plant-derived compounds that exhibit anticancer activity through activating the apoptotic pathway.

There are many other plant-derived compounds that induce apoptosis in cancer cells (Table 1). These include black cohosh of Actaea racemosa [28], Juglone from Juglans mandshurica [29] and genistein [30]. Quercetin, which is found in apples and red onions, activates caspases which leads to the apoptotic response [30]. Green tea is also thought to induce apoptosis in cancer cells, specifically through the compound epigallocatechin-3-gallate [31]. Aloe-emodin, found in Rheum palmatum, also has caspase-activation activity in cancer cells [31]. All of these plant-derived compounds have yet to be fully investigated but are noteworthy compounds that could be the future of cancer therapy. The nontoxicity towards normal, healthy cells while still attacking and producing an apoptotic response in cancer cells make these compounds particularly intriguing.
