Dutch professor develops simple trick to make roads “self-healing”

A professor at Delft University of Technology has come up with a way to make roads heal themselves – with a little help from microwaves.
Erik Schlangen is proposing to mix asphalt with tiny fragments of steel wool, of the kind used to scour pans. The purpose of the steel is not to reinforce the asphalt, but to heat up when subject to microwave radiation...
However, the gaps also make the structure more vulnerable to erosion and weathering. This leads to the formation of microscopic cracks in the bitumen that holds the aggregate together. The result is progressive “ravelling”, and eventually the formation of potholes and loose stones that can damage vehicles using the road.

Schlangen’s idea is to add steel so that the road is easier to heat by induction. When it is heated, the asphalt melts and the microscopic cracks are filled in and hold the aggregate in place.
The Dutch government donated a 400m stretch of the A58 as a test bed for Schlangen’s concept. Research conducted on samples from that pavement have suggested that the life of a road can be doubled if it is melted once every four years...

A 2013 study14 published in the International Journal of Epidemiology found “children exposed to [acetaminophen] for more than 28 days during pregnancy had poorer gross motor development, communication, externalizing behavior, internalizing behavior and higher activity levels” than unexposed children at age 3. Use of ibuprofen was not associated with these neurodevelopmental effects.
A 2016 Spanish investigation15,16 published in the International Journal of Epidemiology found children of both sexes whose mothers used acetaminophen during pregnancy were 41% more likely to present with ADHD symptoms at age 5. Boys were also more likely to have ASD. As noted by the authors:
    “Prenatal acetaminophen exposure was associated with a greater number of autism spectrum symptoms in males and showed adverse effects on attention-related outcomes for both genders. These associations seem to be dependent on the frequency of exposure.”

We propose a new, simple, one-pot, O. vulgare extract (OVE) mediated green synthesis method of biocompatible gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) possessing improved antioxidant, antimicrobial and plasmonic properties...
Results: The experimental results confirmed the successful synthesis of biocompatible, spherical, plasmonic NPs having a mean diameter of ~40 nm and an outstanding aqueous stability. This new class of NPs exhibits a very good antioxidant activity and presents interesting inhibitory effects against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Due to their plasmonic properties, AuNPs are used as SERS substrates for the detection of a test molecule (methylene blue) up to a concentration of 10-7 M and a pharmaceutical compound (propranolol) in solution. Cytotoxicity assays revealed that AuNPs are better tolerated by normal human dermal fibroblast cells, while the melanoma cancer cells are more sensitive.

The resulting AuNPs were incubated at room temperature for 24 h, then purified by centrifugation at 10,000 rpm for 15min. After completing the design stage, the team performed a number of wind tunnel tests, optimisation studies, and outdoor flight tests.
When gaining height, the bio-inspired robot spreads both its wings and tail, and then, upon reaching top speed, the feather-like plates – 9 on each wing and a further 9 on the tail – are tucked in, thereby enhancing aerodynamics and providing for a more realistic flight simulation.
For more rapid altitude adjustment, the tail can also be moved in all four directions. Furthermore, each wing can be expanded and retracted independently to increase drag. This, according to the team, allows the robot to use 55.4% less power when travelling at its optimal speed (about 9.6 m/s) than it otherwise would with both wings and tail fully open.
