Cymatics: A short introduction
Cymatics is the science of sound made visible, typically on the surface of a flexible or semi flexible medium or the surface and sub surface of water.
...John Stuart Reid invented the CymaScope instrument having been inspired by a cymatics experiment he carried out in the Great Pyramid in 1997, in which hieroglyphic symbols emerged on a PVC membrane stretched over the open top of the granite sarcophagus in the King’s Chamber. For more information on his Egyptian studies please refer to the Egyptology section of this site and for information on the CymaScope Pro instrument please refer to the CymaScope section. Like the invention of the microscope and telescope, which revealed realms that were not suspected to exist, the CymaScope reveals the once invisible realm of sound, via the science of cymatics. ..

Can Music Influence the Longevity of Human Blood Cells?
https://experiment.com/u/8qj2Mw
Testing a 2,500 year-old hypothesis: If music breathes new life into old blood cells... play on!
John says "The reason why certain music selections return higher living cell ratios between blood exposed to music and blood in a very quiet environment is, I hypothesise, due to the presence of specific frequencies that repair damaged cell membranes within 20-minutes of immersion in music. I conjecture that the frequencies involved in this process are at the bass end of the acoustic spectrum, although I hope to identify the frequencies in future research".
In vitro experiments to test the effect of music on red blood cell longevity
Inspired by Pythagoras’ belief concerning music and health, in early 2015 John Stuart Reid conceived experiments to test the 2,500 year old hypothesis, designing in vitro
experiments to test the effect of music on human cell longevity. Early in 2017, Emily Abbey of roadmusic.co, suggested using blood as the source of the human cells
to be tested and conjectured that our appreciation for a specific genre of music might be related to our blood group (a factor for testing in future experiments). Reid reached out to Sayer Ji, founder of GreenMedInfo.com, who enthusiastically agreed to support the experiments. Then, in late 2017, the Experiment.com bid for funding support was launched and by early 2018, with the generous help of GreenMedInfo.com subscribers, roadmusic.co supporters and CymaScope.com followers, the experiment bid costs were met and exceeded, fuelling the foundations of this research.
Professor Sungchul Ji of Rutgers University and John Stuart Reid, director of research at the CymaScope laboratory, developed the experimental protocol and conducted the initial experiments in early 2018. The results were very encouraging, as mentioned in our lab report of March 19, 2018, and provided the basis for a second series of experiments in May 2019, conducted by John Stuart Reid with Professor Ji acting as consultant. Roadmusic.co provided helpful assistance with curious music suggestions. In addition to equipment provided as a result of generous donations by Experiment.com and GreenMedInfo.com supporters, whole human blood was funded by a kind donation from Sound4Healing, a UK registered charity.
Method
Whole blood, type O+ from a female donor, was stored in vials in the laboratory fridge at 4 degrees C. A vial was taken from the fridge and slowly raised to ambient temperature, which averaged 23 degrees C in the laboratory. The contents of the vial were shaken for 30-seconds by means of a mechanical shaker, then decanted into two vials, using a pipettor.
One vial was placed in the laboratory music incubator (37 degrees C) in which was located a Sony speaker, model SS-TS3, driven by an SMSL amplifier, model SA-36A. In most cases the audio signal source was an iMac computer accessing audio files in a variety of formats, mainly FLAC and WAV. The music incubator vial was immersed in a
music (or other) sound field averaging 85 dBA, for 20-minutes, the sound pressure level was measured with a calibrated Castle GA214 integrating sound level meter.
Each music incubator vial was immersed in only one of the music selections. For the white noise experiments the source was a Klark Teknik DN6000 audio analyser.
The other vial, the control blood, was placed in an incubator (37 degrees C) in the very quiet environment of the Faraday Cage (25dBA) for the same 20-minute period as for the music immersed vial.
Immediately following the 20-minute test period, the blood from each vial was diluted in a ratio of 200:1 with a buffer solution of pH 7.41, followed by pipettor mixing with Trypan blue stain, and a cell counting via an automatic cell counter by NanoEntek Inc.
Results
The two examples of classical music returned similar results to those obtained in the 2018 initial experiments, showing significant differences in ratios in the red blood cell
counts between the music environment and the quiet environment. In addition, music selections from several other genres were tested, including piano, guitar, female vocal, male vocal, group chant, rap, dance /techno/house, harp, gong, vocal musical intervals, spiritually-oriented music and sound from a Cyma Technologies AMI1000 commercial sound therapy instrument. White noise was also tested at two sound pressure levels: 85 dBA and 105 dBA.
The results are summarised in Tables One and Two. For clarity and in the interests of
confidentiality with the copyright holders of the music, the actual numbers of red blood cells per mL are not shown. Instead, the ratios between the numbers of viable red blood cells in the music environment versus those viable in the quiet environment are tabulated.
Table One exhibits the results from three sections of music genres, each of which encompasses a range of music selections in three different concert pitches: 432Hz, 440Hz and 444Hz. The music selections yielded a range of ratios of viable red blood cells versus the control samples in the quiet environment, ranging from 2.22:1 to 23.41:1. The many pieces of music tested, by various artists in various concert pitches, all showed a significant increase in the number of viable red blood cells over the number counted in the control blood vials. Also, the selections of music in all three concert pitches returned similar results to each other in terms of the range of numbers of viable red blood cells; no one concert pitch stood out as being dominant.
Table Two shows the results from six individual selections of music, in two concert pitches, 432Hz and 440Hz. The table also shows results from a gong performance and two levels of white noise. The music and gong selections show ratios between 4.13:1 and 18.1:1. Again, neither 432Hz or 440Hz concert pitch was found to dominate.
The highest number of viable red blood cells counted followed blood’s immersion in the sound field of a proprietary sound therapy device for 20- minutes, selecting a sound prescription labelled cell regeneration. It delivered a figure of 3,400,000 RBC per mL, versus 290,000 RBC per mL counted from the same blood sample after immersion in the quiet environment of the Faraday Cage incubator for 20-minutes.
The results from white noise tests were as follows:
White Noise (85 dBA) viable RBC: 1,800,000 per mL
Quiet environment (25dBA) viable RBC: 390,000 per mL
White noise (105dBA) viable RBC 76,000 per mL
Quiet environment (25 dBA) viable RBC 350,000 per ml

This A-flat frequency is precisely a 3rd-harmonic below the Hebrew Helek E-flat frequency.
It corresponds to 0.1 Hz, which is another way of saying, it takes 10 seconds for this fundamental frequency to complete. Interestingly, the HeartMath Institute posits that the Heart and Brain synchronize at precisely this 0.1 Hz frequency.
Background:

Cymatics:
John Stuart Reid, inventor of the CymaScope instrument used to create these images says: Here is iteration 1 of 12.8Hz, which is a moment captured before full expression was reached. I had intended to trash it but somehow I couldn’t bring myself to do so because I find that central phallic-like feature and its surrounding structures fascinating.
On the second image: [this] beautiful CymaGlyph exhibits 4/ 8-fold geometry, with highly intricate organic-like structures, and at top centre a disc-shaped saucer. Some mathematicians believe that E8 mathematics hold the secret to all that is.
To me, it might be angels amassing their energies, and resounding a portal from the divine – the clarion manifestation of all being.
Interesting how the Establishment co-opts symmetries of creation into their own heraldic mythos – making the stuff that everything is made of into something somehow belonging to them. This is a 5-shilling, commemorative British coin I have. The back of it is the queen riding a horse.
Gematria:
1, 2, 4, 8, 7, 5 – recurring
This is the first non-recurring frequency in the Earth harmonic-series derived from a Day.
Like the “C” (1Hz) frequency that is its 5th harmonic, each octave of this A-flat frequency (0.1 Hz) behaves like a binary multiplier (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, etc), and like A-flat it also follows a “doubling circuit” gematria, described by Marco Rodin in Vortex Mathematics, e.g. with each octave, the Gematria goes through the repeating cycle: 1 to 2 to 4 to 8 to 7 to 5 … and then starts the circuit again with 1, as shown

0.2 Hz
0.4 Hz

0.16 Hz (1+6 = 7)
0.32 Hz (3+2 = 5)
….
0.64 Hz (6+4 = 1)
1.28 Hz (1+2+8 = 11, 1+1 = 2)
2.56 Hz (2+5+6 = 13, 1+3 = 4)
etc.
Biological life begins with the doubling and doubling of cells. It might be that this frequency is that multiplier energy which manages that multiplication.
Mythology and Metrology:
Starting with 0.1 Hz, magnetic A-flat seems like a foundational frequency, where its octaves trace out a binary series: 0.2 Hz, 0.4 Hz, 0.8 Hz 25.6 Hz, 102.4 Hz, etc.
For these reasons, I feel like this A-flat is the foundational building block of our 3-Dimensional reality – the first stable number that manifests
Alternatively, if Halakim are the correct measure of time for Sacred Geometry (rather than seconds), it may be the next row of frequencies that are displaying the binary effect, e.g. Eb is 1 vibration per Helek; it’s octave would be 2 vibrations per Helek, etc. Either way, A-flat and C at 1Hz seem to occupy a boundary condition between the recursive frequencies of physical geometry and, in my conjecture, the stable frequencies of biology

Background:
Every day, Earth completes a rotation on its axis. If you beat a drum precisely once a day (that’s once every 86,400 seconds), and then doubled that frequency so the drum was once every 12 hours, every 6 hours, every 3 hours, every 90 minutes – and kept doubling, that beat would slowly be heard as a drumming sound and then as a tone. The tone you hear here is 20 octaves above the frequency of a Day, at 12.18 Hz (vibrations per second) – plus some additional octaves.
This might be considered the fundamental frequency of gravity for our planet – the daily heartbeat of its rotation, generating the Earth’s magnetic field and the centripetal forces that hold all energy together.
All the other frequencies we detected are derived harmonically as 3rd or 5th harmonics from this vibrational root. E.g. the B-flat and F frequencies I detected are all harmonics, derived from this root of the vibrational tree of life.
Cymatics:
This 4-sided symmetry corresponds to the way the Earth is symbolised as a square across all ancient cultures.
John Stuart Reid, inventor of the CymaScope instrument says:
Another very beautiful CymaGlyph, in this case very obviously exhibiting 4-fold geometry, and with an exquisitely detailed central form that is reminiscent of the neolithic “lozenge” shape”

Background
This is one of at least two “C”s generated harmonically from the Earth’s “roto-magnetic” resonance (I made that word up). This one is the 5th harmonic (major-3rd) of the magnetic A-flat frequency. The other is the 3rd harmonic (perfect-fifth interval) of the magnetic F frequency.
Like A-flat, the octaves of this “C” frequency expand like a binary multiplier – e.g. 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 Hz – like a computer.
Gematria
1, 2, 4, 8, 7, 5 – recurring:
Because the foundational frequency is 1Hz, the gematria for each octave follows the “doubling circuit” described by Marco Rodin in Vortex Mathematics, e.g. with each octave, the Gematria goes through the repeating cycle of numbers: 1 to 2 to 4 to 8 to 7 to 5 … and then starts the circuit again with 1, as shown:

128 Hz (1+2+8 = 11, 1+1 = 2)
256 Hz (2+5+6 = 13, 1+3 = 4)
etc.
Mythology and Metrology:
It’s possible that computers based on the binary system are emulating the fundamental archetype of nature encapsulated in this frequency – creating a chain of simple “life” in the digital domain as these frequencies do in the natural domain.

E flat -- Infinite Pump Manifester of Life
![]()
Background:
This E-flat frequency is closely related to the Helek, the ancient Hebrew and Babylonian measure of time, equal to 3.3333 recurring of today’s seconds. That’s a moment long enough to have a thought, and the time the Earth rotates 1/72nd of a degree.
That resonance, 0.3 vibrations per second underlies a measurable peak in the Earth’s electro-magnetic field at 9.6 Hz. Interesting how the ancient Hebrew second marks a frequency which is foundational to the Earth’s rotation. Could they somehow hear, measure, or sense that resonance?
Cymatics:
Some say this hot little number is the gateway between cosmic sacred geometry, and sacred biology: She brings 5-sided symmetry and an infinite, fractal perspective of self-actualisation. E-flat is sympathetic, and always ready to co-create!
DNA, when viewed in cross-section, has 10-sided symmetry (an octave of 5); and vertebrate creatures such as humans and frogs have 5 appendages (head, arms, feet) – like little starfish.
This gateway between 6-sided, cosmic symmetry and 5-sided biological symmetry has been recognised through the ages, as described in this etching, Melencolia by Albrecht Dürer; and in this video by Jain 108:
John Stuart Reid says: In the Extremely Low Frequency range, sometimes even very small frequency changes can result in dramatic changes in the geometry. In this CymaGlyph we see gorgeous manifestaions of pentagonal geometry, as if this frequency wishes to underline that it is Nature’s most powerful expression of the phi ratio. But the central imagery is even more exciting. It is literally a tunnel to (perhaps) infinity. Many years ago, [my wife] received a message during one of her meditations that the CymaScope instrument was a portal between dimensions. Perhaps what we are seeing in this astonishing CymaGlyph is an example of that.
Gematria: 3 and 6
The numbers for octaves of this frequency in Hz resolve to 3 or 6, e.g.
0.3 Hz
0.6 Hz
1.2 Hz (1 + 2 = 3)
9.6 Hz (9 + 6 = 15, 1+ 5 = 6)
307.2 Hz (3 + 7 + 2 = 12, 1 + 2 = 3)
Nikola Tesla said, “If you only knew the magnificence of the 3, 6 and 9, then you would have the key to the universe“. This E-flat is the first instance of the 3 and the 6 – which resolve to the 9 in the next harmonic, B-flat, 7.2 Hz
Mythology and Metrology:
The pentagon has 5 angles each of 72 degrees.
(The Earth magnetic B-flat frequency is based on 7.2 Hz, and 72 Hz is its major-3rd (5th harmonic) Astral D frequency (which also matches the frequency of the sun, according to NASA’s sonfication).
72 (and its octave, 144) are sacred numbers in the Indian Vedas, the Bible, the Quran – and other sources.
The pentagon also contains within it the Phi/Fibonacci ratio (1.618 etc) as the ratio between the length of the side of the pentagon (1 unit, in this case), and the line from its corner to the opposite corner of the pentagon, 1.618 as shown.
An area where I think has been unique has been in identifying that the Phi/Fibonacci ratio is actually a harmonic, musical ratio – reflecting simply how physical matter develops from harmonic energies on top of harmonic energies – see here for more of that study. This is an area I don’t believe anyone else has identified, but it becomes clear when the Phi series is seeded with an Earth frequency, and progressed as usual by deriving the next number by adding the two previous numbers. e.g.
0.3 (Eb)
0.6 (Eb)
0.9 (Bb)
1.5 (G)
2.4 (Eb)
3.9 (13th harmonic)
3.9 Hz is a composite of 3.6 (Bb) and 0.3 (Eb) – or the (much maligned) 13th harmonic of the seed 0.3 Hz Eb frequency (0.3 Hz x 13 = 3.9 Hz)
6.3 (7th harmonic of Bb)
10.2 (17th harmonic)
16.5 (55th harmonic of Eb at 0.3 Hz, or 11th harmonic of G at 1.5 Hz),
Strangely enough, 16.5 Hz is a sub-octave of the fabled 528 frequency. But see here for my investigation of how “528” should really be 158.4 Hz which is the 11th harmonic of B-flat when converted from the Biblical vibrations per Helek, to modern vibrations per second

The new CymaScope app, 2.0 launched September 2025
CymaScope App 2.0
The first-generation CymaScope app was built in 2015 and broke new ground, making it possible for the first time to visualise music in shimmering cymatic beauty. Now, in 2025, the CymaScope app 2.0 is born into a world in which people are much more aware of frequencies than a decade ago—a world in which healing with Frequency Medicine is becoming mainstream. The new CymaScope app supports this trend with an articles section on subjects including Sonic Science and Frequency Medicine, which will build over time, creating a repository of specialist knowledge, because the articles are accessed online.

Cymatics
Cymatics (from Ancient Greek: ????, romanized: k?ma, lit.?'wave') is a subset of modal vibrational phenomena. The term was coined by Swiss physician Hans Jenny (1904–1972). Typically the surface of a plate, diaphragm, or membrane is vibrated, and regions of maximum and minimum displacement are made visible in a thin coating of particles, paste, or liquid.[1] Different patterns emerge in the excitatory medium depending on the geometry of the plate and the driving frequency.
The apparatus employed can be simple, such as the Chinese spouting bowl, in which copper handles are rubbed and cause the copper bottom elements to vibrate. Other examples include the Chladni plate[2] and the so-called cymascope.
History
On July 8, 1680, Robert Hooke was able to see the nodal patterns associated with the modes of vibration of glass plates. Hooke ran a bow along the edge of a glass plate covered with flour, and saw the nodal patterns emerge.[3]
The German musician and physicist Ernst Chladni noticed in the eighteenth century that the modes of vibration of a membrane or a plate can be observed by sprinkling the vibrating surface with a fine dust (e.g., lycopodium powder, flour or fine sand). The powder moves due to the vibration and accumulates progressively in points of the surface corresponding to the sound vibration. The points form a pattern of lines, known as "nodal lines of the vibration mode". The normal modes of vibration, and the pattern of nodal lines associated with each of these, are completely determined, for a surface with homogeneous mechanical characteristics, from the geometric shape of the surface and by the way in which the surface is constrained.[3]
Experiments of this kind, similar to those carried out earlier by Galileo Galilei[4] around 1630 and by Robert Hooke in 1680, were later perfected by Chladni, who introduced them systematically in 1787 in his book Entdeckungen über die Theorie des Klanges (Discoveries on the theory of sound). This provided an important contribution to the understanding of acoustic phenomena and the functioning of musical instruments. The figures thus obtained (with the aid of a violin bow that rubbed perpendicularly along the edge of smooth plates covered with fine sand) are still designated by the name of "Chladni figures".
Michael Faraday discovered that liquids in a bowl produce regular patterns when the bowl is vibrated, so-called Faraday waves.
Work of Hans Jenny
In 1967 Hans Jenny, a student of the anthroposophist Rudolf Steiner, published the first of two volumes in German entitled Kymatic; the second was published posthumously in 1972.) He showed the evolution of harmonic images by subjecting inert substances to oscillating sound waves. His substantial body of work, based on rigorous scientific methodology, developed Chladni's experiments, highlighting intricate, organic, harmonic images that reflected many universal patterns found throughout nature and especially living organisms. Jenny spread powders, pastes, and liquids on a metal plate connected to an oscillator which could produce a broad spectrum of frequencies. The substances were organized into different structures characterized by geometric shapes typical of the frequency of the vibration emitted by the oscillator. According to Jenny, these structures, reminiscent of the mandala and other forms recurring in nature, would be a manifestation of an invisible force field of the vibrational energy that generated it. He was particularly impressed by an observation that imposing a vocalization in ancient Sanskrit of Om (regarded by Hindus and Buddhists as the sound of creation) the lycopodium powder formed a circle with a centre point, one of the ways in which Om had been represented.
In fact, for a plate of circular shape, resting in the centre (or the border, or at least in a set of points with central symmetry), the nodal vibration modes all have central symmetry, so the observation of Jenny is entirely consistent with well known mathematical properties.[5] From the physical-mathematical standpoint, the form of the nodal patterns is predetermined by the shape of the body set in vibration or, in the case of acoustic waves in a gas, the shape of the cavity in which the gas is contained. The sound wave, therefore, does not influence at all the shape of the vibrating body or the shape of the nodal patterns. The only thing that changes due to the vibration is the arrangement of the sand. The image formed by the sand, in turn, is influenced by the frequency spectrum of the vibration only because each vibration mode is characterized by a specific frequency. Therefore, the spectrum of the signal that excites the vibration determines which patterns are actually nodally displayed. The physical phenomena involved in the formation of Chladni figures are best explained by classical physics.[6]
Influences on art and music
Devices for displaying nodal images have influenced visual arts and contemporary music. Artist Björk created projections of cymatics patterns by using bass frequencies on tour for her album Biophilia.
Hans Jenny's book on Chladni figures influenced Alvin Lucier and helped lead to Lucier's composition Queen of the South. Jenny's work was also followed up by Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS) founder György Kepes at MIT.[7] His work in this area included an acoustically vibrated piece of sheet metal in which small holes had been drilled in a grid. Small flames of gas burned through these holes and thermodynamic patterns were made visible by this setup.
In the mid-1980s, visual artist Ron Rocco, who also developed his work at CAVS, employed mirrors mounted to tiny servo motors, driven by the audio signal of a synthesizer and amplified by a tube amp to reflect the beam of a laser. This created light patterns which corresponded to the audio's frequency and amplitude. Using this beam to generate video feedback and computers to process the feedback signal, Rocco created his "Andro-media" series of installations. Rocco later formed a collaboration with musician David Hykes, who practiced a form of Mongolian overtone chanting with The Harmonic Choir, to generate cymatic images from a pool of liquid mercury, which functioned as a liquid mirror to modulate the beam of a Helium-Neon laser from the sound thus generated. Photographs of this work can be found in the Ars Electronica catalog of 1987.[8]
Contemporary German photographer and philosopher Alexander Lauterwasser has brought cymatics into the 21st century using finely crafted crystal oscillators to resonate steel plates covered with fine sand and to vibrate small samples of water in Petri dishes. His first book, Water Sound Images,[9] translated into English in 2006, features imagery of light reflecting off the surface of water set into motion by sound sources ranging from pure sine waves to music by Beethoven, Karlheinz Stockhausen, electroacoustic group Kymatik (who often record in ambisonic surround sound) and overtone singing. The resulting photographs of standing wave patterns are striking. Lauterwasser's book focused on creating detailed visual analogues of natural patterns ranging from the distribution of spots on a leopard to the geometric patterns found in plants and flowers, to the shapes of jellyfish and the intricate patterns found on the shell of a tortoise.
Composer Stuart Mitchell and his father T.J. Mitchell claimed that Rosslyn Chapel's carvings supposedly contain references to cymatics patterns. In 2005 they created a work called The Rosslyn Motet realised by attempting to match various Chladni patterns to 13 geometric symbols carved onto the faces of cubes emanating from 14 arches.[10]
The musical group The Glitch Mob used cymatics to produce the music video "Becoming Harmonious (ft. Metal Mother)".[11]
Influenced by yantra diagrams and cymatics, artist and fashion designer Mandali Mendrilla created a sculpture dress called "Kamadhenu" (Wish Tree Dress III) the pattern of which is based on a Yantra diagram depicting goddess Kamadhenu.[12][13]
Aphex Twin suggests learning more about cymatics in reference to 'master tuning of 440 Hz' in a conversation with synth-maker Tatsuya Takahashi.[14]
Since 2010, the art collective Analema Group creates participatory performances in which cymatic patterns are produced digitally in real-time by the audience.[15]
In 2014 musician Nigel Stanford produced "Cymatics", an instrumental and music video designed to demonstrate the visual aspects of cymatics.[16]
In 2016 songwriter and former Arizona State Quarterback Samson Szakacsy brought a cymatics device he called "the Drawing Machine" on tour and had each set draw live to portray how music looks.[citation needed]
Contemporary American painter Jimmy O'Neal created his own cymascope, which he has used to produce various works of public art. One such painting is 511.95 Hz of wine, a large-scale mural based on the pattern created when tracing a finger around the rim of a nearly-empty wine glass.[17]
In 2020 an official medal was issued by the Royal Dutch Mint to mark the 65th anniversary of the Eurovision Song Contest hosted by the city of Rotterdam . A 3D scanner was able to capture the cymatics shapes of a vibrating dish filled with water from the Maas river. To create the coin, all the historical winning songs from previous contests were mixed together and emitted through a speaker.video,
The logo and theme art for Eurovision 2022 is based on cymatics.[18]
The main title sequence for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is inspired by cymatics.[19]
Influences in engineering
Inspired by periodic and symmetrical patterns at the air-liquid interface created by sound vibration, P. Chen and coworkers developed a method to engineer diverse structures from microscale materials using liquid-based templates.[20] This liquid-based template can be dynamically reconfigured by tuning vibration frequency and acceleration.
