The Besler
Steam Plane
A Travel Air 2000 biplane made the world's first
piloted flight under steam power over Oakland,
California, on 12 April 1933.
The strangest feature of the flight was its relative
silence; spectators on the ground could hear the pilot
when he called to them from mid-air.
The aircraft, piloted by William Besler, had been
fitted with a two-cylinder, 150 hp reciprocating
engine.
An important contribution to its design was made by
Nathan C. Price, a former Doble Steam Motors engineer.
Price was working on high pressure compact engines for
rail and road transport; the purpose of the flight was
to obtain publicity for this work. Following its
unexpectedly favourable reception Price went to Boeing
and worked on various aviation projects, but Boeing
dropped the idea of a steam aeroengine in 1936. Price
later worked for Lockheed where his experience with
developing compact burners for steam boilers helped to
design Lockheed's first jet engine.
The advantages of the "Besler System" that were
claimed at the time included the elimination of
audible noise and destructive vibration; greater
efficiency at low engine speeds and also at high
altitudes where lower air temperatures assisted
condensation; reduced likelihood of engine failure;
reduced maintenance costs; reduced fuel costs, since
fuel oil was used in place of petrol; reduced fire
hazard since the fuel was less volatile and operating
temperatures were lower; and a lack of need for radio
shielding.
For capacities in excess of 1000 horse power a turbine
captures the energy released by the expansion of steam
more efficiently than a piston. Thus, the steam
reciprocating engine turned out to be unsuitable for
scaling up to the needs of large aircraft.

The
Original Flying Flea
The Flying Flea is a creation of a French inventor
Henri Mignet. Mignet had failed to be accepted as a
pilot and decided to build his own plane. Between 1931
and 1933 he tested and built prototypes in Paris and
tested them in a large field northeast of the city.
According to his later book, Le Sport de l'Air, he
successfully flew the first successful model, HM-14,
in September 10, 1933. He successfully demonstrated it
at 1934 and published the plans and instructions in a
book.
Mignet made the aircraft intentionally simple. Flying
Flea is essentially a single-seat light monoplane
built of wood and fabric. Original design has two-axis
controls stick, 18 feet pivoting front wing, 13-feet
fixed, tandem rear wing and simple rudder. The
propeller was powered by small motorcycle or car
engine. Mignet claimed that anyone who could build a
packing case and drive a car could fly a Flying Flea.
Numerous enthusiasts in Europe and the USA began to
build their own aircraft. In France there were at
least 500. Average cost of the materials was then
$350.
However, in the beginning many Fleas crashed when
pilots could not recover from shallow dives, resulting
in some deaths. The Royal Aircraft Establishment in
the United Kingdom and the French Air Ministry
investigated the design and suggested improvements
that increased the safety of the aircraft. By 1939
there were thousands of Flying Fleas but in other
circles the aircraft retained its dangerous
reputation.

Potential
reversal of epigenetic age using a diet and
lifestyle intervention: a pilot randomized clinical

Abstract
Manipulations to slow biological aging and extend
healthspan are of interest given the societal and
healthcare costs of our aging population. Herein we
report on a randomized controlled clinical trial
conducted among 43 healthy adult males between the
ages of 50-72. The 8-week treatment program included
diet, sleep, exercise and relaxation guidance, and
supplemental probiotics and phytonutrients. The
control group received no intervention. Genome-wide
DNA methylation analysis was conducted on saliva
samples using the Illumina Methylation Epic Array and
DNAmAge was calculated using the online Horvath
DNAmAge clock (2013). The diet and lifestyle treatment
was associated with a 3.23 years decrease in DNAmAge
compared with controls (p=0.018). DNAmAge of those in
the treatment group decreased by an average 1.96 years
by the end of the program compared to the same
individuals at the beginning with a strong trend
towards significance (p=0.066). Changes in blood
biomarkers were significant for mean serum
5-methyltetrahydrofolate (+15%, p=0.004) and mean
triglycerides (-25%, p=0.009). To our knowledge, this
is the first randomized controlled study to suggest
that specific diet and lifestyle interventions may
reverse Horvath DNAmAge (2013) epigenetic aging in
healthy adult males. Larger-scale and longer duration
clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings,
as well as investigation in other human populations.

...Turning waste plastic into fuel isn’t a new
idea. Many researchers have achieved it through a
process called pyrolysis, which involves heating
plastic to between 300º C and 900º C in an oxygen-free
environment. This breaks the substance down into fuel,
along with some additional chemicals. Hongfei Lin,
associate professor with The Gene and Linda Voiland
School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering at
WSU, thinks that he and his team have discovered a way
to make the process more efficient and environmentally
friendly.
The team has a track record of making fuels from
biomass sources. A year and a half ago, however, they
decided to look into chemically deconstructing
polyethylene, one of the most common forms of plastic
in the world. The team began trying out pretreating
the plastic with different combinations of solvents
and catalysts prior to heating.
“Initially, we didn't know what would happen,” Lin
told Ars.
Solving for the solvent
According to Lin, the solvents they tested
penetrated the plastics and changed their physical
properties, making them more accessible to the
catalysts and maximizing the reaction rates. After
testing a few different compounds, they found that
n-hexane is the best solvent for producing the most
fuel, while methylcyclohexane is the best option for
producing more high-quality lubricant, another product
of the process.
The team also used a ruthenium-on-carbon catalyst,
which cleaved the covalent bonds between the carbon
atoms in the plastic. After heating the plastic for an
hour at 220º C—and injecting hydrogen into the
reactor—the team found that 90 percent of it turned
into the components of jet fuel and lubricant. The
remaining 10 percent was converted to gases such as
methane. The team can tinker with the different
chemicals involved to produce more fuel or lubricant,
as desired, he said...

Can ultrasound restore memory?
Transgenic mice with increased amyloid-β (Aβ)
production show several aspects of Alzheimer’s
disease, including Aβ deposition and memory
impairment. By repeatedly treating these Aβ-forming
mice with scanning ultrasound, Leinenga and Götz now
demonstrate that Aβ is removed and memory is restored
as revealed by improvement in three memory tasks.
These improvements were achieved without the use of
any therapeutic agent, and the scanning ultrasound
treatment did not induce any apparent damage to the
mouse brain. The authors then showed that scanning
ultrasound activated resident microglial cells that
took up Aβ into their lysosomes. These findings
suggest that repeated scanning ultrasound may be a
noninvasive method with potential for treating
Alzheimer’s disease.
Abstract
Amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide has been implicated in the
pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). We present a
nonpharmacological approach for removing Aβ and
restoring memory function in a mouse model of AD in
which Aβ is deposited in the brain. We used repeated
scanning ultrasound (SUS) treatments of the mouse
brain to remove Aβ, without the need for any
additional therapeutic agent such as anti-Aβ antibody.
Spinning disk confocal microscopy and high-resolution
three-dimensional reconstruction revealed extensive
internalization of Aβ into the lysosomes of activated
microglia in mouse brains subjected to SUS, with no
concomitant increase observed in the number of
microglia. Plaque burden was reduced in SUS-treated AD
mice compared to sham-treated animals, and cleared
plaques were observed in 75% of SUS-treated mice.
Treated AD mice also displayed improved performance on
three memory tasks: the Y-maze, the novel object
recognition test, and the active place avoidance task.
Our findings suggest that repeated SUS is useful for
removing Aβ in the mouse brain without causing overt
damage, and should be explored further as a
noninvasive method with therapeutic potential in AD.

Abstract
The fate of bacteria in human urine was studied
after inoculation of small numbers of Escherichia coli
and other bacterial strains commonly implicated in
urinary tract infection. Urine from normal individuals
was often inhibitory and sometimes bactericidal for
growth of these organisms. Antibacterial activity of
urine was not related to lack of nutrient material as
addition of broth did not decrease inhibitory
activity. Antibacterial activity was correlated with
osmolality, urea concentration and ammonium
concentration, but not with organic acid, sodium, or
potassium concentration. Between a pH range of 5.0-6.5
antibacterial activity of urine was greater at lower
pH. Ultrafiltration and column chromatography to
remove protein did not decrease antibacterial
activity.
Urea concentration was a more important determinant of
antibacterial activity than osmolality or ammonium
concentration. Increasing the urea of a noninhibitory
urine to equal that of an inhibitory urine made the
urine inhibitory. However, increasing osmolality (with
sodium chloride) or increasing ammonium to equal the
osmolality or ammonium of an inhibitory urine did not
increase antibacterial activity. Similarly, dialysis
to decrease osmolality or ammonium but preserve urea
did not decrease inhibitory activity. Decreasing urea
with preservation of ammonium and osmolality decreased
antibacterial activity. Removal of ammonium with an
ion exchanger did not decrease antibacterial activity,
whereas conversion of urea to ammonium with urease and
subsequent removal of the ammonium decreased
antibacterial activity.
Urine collected from volunteers after ingestion of
urea demonstrated a marked increase in antibacterial
activity, as compared with urine collected before
ingestion of urea.

unethical, anti-science and deeply disturbing.
As physicians, our primary duty of care is not to the
CPSO or any other authority, but to our patients.
When we became physicians, we pledged to put our
patients first and that our ethical and professional
duty is always first toward our patients. The CPSO
statement orders us to violate our duty and pledge to
our patients in the following ways:
1. Denial of the Scientific Method itself: The CPSO is
ordering physicians to put aside the scientific method
and to not debate the processes and conclusions of
science.
We physicians know and continue to believe that
throughout history, opposing views, vigorous debate
and openness to new ideas have been the bedrock of
scientific progress. Any major advance in science has
been arrived at by practitioners vigorously
questioning “official” narratives and following a
different path in the pursuit of truth.
2. Violation of our Pledge to use Evidence-Based
Medicine for our patients: By ordering us not to
debate and not to question, the CPSO is also asking us
to violate our pledge to our patients that we will
always seek the best, evidence-based scientific
methods for them and advocate vigorously on their
behalf.
The CPSO statement orders physicians for example, not
to discuss or communicate with the public about
“lockdown” measures. Lockdown measures are the subject
of lively debate by world-renown and widely respected
experts and there are widely divergent views on this
subject. The explicitly anti-lockdown Great Barrington
Declaration (PDF ) was written by experts from
Harvard, Stanford and Oxford Universities and more
than 40,000 physicians from all over the world have
signed this declaration. Several international experts
including Martin Kuldorf (Harvard), David Katz (Yale),
Jay Bhattacharya (Stanford) and Sunetra Gupta (Oxford)
continue to strongly oppose lockdowns.
The CPSO is ordering physicians to express only
pro-lockdown views, or else face investigation and
discipline. This tyrannical, anti-science CPSO
directive is regarded by thousands of Canadian
physicians and scientists as unsupported by science
and as violating the first duty of care to our
patients.
3. Violation of Duty of Informed Consent: The CPSO is
also ordering physicians to violate the sacred duty of
informed consent – which is the process by which the
patient/public is fully informed of the risks,
benefits and any alternatives to the treatment or
intervention, before consent is given.
The Nuremberg Code, drafted in the aftermath of the
atrocities perpetrated within the Nazi concentration
camps – where horrific medical experiments were
performed on inmates without consent – expressly
forbids the imposition of any kind of intervention
without informed consent.
In the case of the lockdown intervention for example,
physicians have a fiduciary duty to point out to the
public that lockdowns impose their own costs on
society, including in greatly increased depression and
suicide rates, delayed investigation and treatment of
cancer (including delayed surgery, chemotherapy and
radiation therapy), ballooning surgical waiting lists
(with attendant greatly increased patient suffering)
and increased rates of child and domestic abuse.
We physicians believe that with the CPSO statement of
30 April 2021, a watershed moment in the assault on
free speech and scientific inquiry has been reached.
By ordering physicians to be silent and follow only
one narrative, or else face discipline and censure,
the CPSO is asking us to violate our conscience, our
professional ethics, the Nuremberg code and the
scientific pursuit of truth.
We will never comply and will always put our patients
first.
The CPSO must immediately withdraw and rescind its
statement of 30 April 2021.
We also give notice to other Canadian and
international licensing authorities for physicians and
allied professions that the stifling of scientific
inquiry and any order to violate our conscience and
professional pledge to our patients, itself may
constitute a crime against humanity.

Abstract
Magnetogenetics is a new field that leverages
genetically encoded proteins and protein assemblies
that are sensitive to magnetic fields to study and
manipulate cell behavior. Theoretical studies show
that many proposed magnetogenetic proteins do not
contain enough iron to generate substantial magnetic
forces. Here, we have engineered a genetically encoded
ferritin-containing protein crystal that grows inside
mammalian cells. Each of these crystals contains more
than 10 million ferritin subunits and is capable of
mineralizing substantial amounts of iron. When
isolated from cells and loaded with iron in vitro,
these crystals generate magnetic forces that are 9
orders of magnitude larger than the forces from the
single ferritin cages used in previous studies. These
protein crystals are attracted to an applied magnetic
field and move toward magnets even when internalized
into cells. While additional studies are needed to
realize the full potential of magnetogenetics, these
results demonstrate the feasibility of engineering
protein assemblies for magnetic sensing.

ABSTRACT
Development of new vaccine technology has been
plagued with problems in the past. The current RNA
based SARS-CoV-2 vaccines were approved in the US
using an emergency order without extensive long term
safety testing. In this paper the Pfizer COVID-19
vaccine was evaluated for the potential to induce
prion-based disease in vaccine recipients. The RNA
sequence of the vaccine as well as the spike protein
target interaction were analyzed for the potential to
convert intracellular RNA binding proteins TAR DNA
binding protein (TDP-43) and Fused in Sarcoma (FUS)
into their pathologic prion conformations. The results
indicate that the vaccine RNA has specific sequences
that may induce TDP-43 and FUS to fold into their
pathologic prion confirmations. In the current
analysis a total of sixteen UG tandem repeats (ΨGΨG)
were identified and additional UG (ΨG) rich sequences
were identified. Two GGΨA sequences were found.
Potential G Quadruplex sequences are possibly present
but a more sophisticated computer program is needed to
verify these. Furthermore, the spike protein, created
by the translation of the vaccine RNA, binds
angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), a zinc
containing enzyme. This interaction has the potential
to increase intracellular zinc. Zinc ions have been
shown to cause the transformation of TDP-43 to its
pathologic prion configuration. The folding of TDP-43
and FUS into their pathologic prion confirmations is
known to cause ALS, front temporal lobar degeneration,
Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological
degenerative diseases. The enclosed finding as well as
additional potential risks leads the author to believe
that regulatory approval of the RNA based vaccines for
SARS-CoV-2 was premature and that the vaccine may
cause much more harm than benefit

We show that the commonly accepted statement that
sound waves do not transport mass is only true at
linear order. Using effective field theory techniques,
we confirm the result found in [1] for
zero-temperature superfluids, and extend it to the
case of solids and ordinary fluids. We show that, in
fact, sound waves do carry mass---in particular,
gravitational mass. This implies that a sound wave not
only is affected by gravity but also generates a tiny
gravitational field, an aspect not appreciated thus
far. Our findings are valid for non-relativistic media
as well, and could have intriguing experimental
implications.

The post-infection of COVID-19 includes a myriad
of neurologic symptoms including neurodegeneration.
Protein aggregation in brain can be considered as one
of the important reasons behind the neurodegeneration.
SARS-CoV-2 Spike S1 protein receptor binding domain
(SARS-CoV-2 S1 RBD) binds to heparin and heparin
binding proteins. Moreover, heparin binding
accelerates the aggregation of the pathological
amyloid proteins present in the brain. In this paper,
we have shown that the SARS-CoV-2 S1 RBD binds to a
number of aggregation-prone, heparin binding proteins
including Aβ, α-synuclein, tau, prion, and TDP-43 RRM.
These interactions suggests that the heparin-binding
site on the S1 protein might assist the binding of
amyloid proteins to the viral surface and thus could
initiate aggregation of these proteins and finally
leads to neurodegeneration in brain. The results will
help us to prevent future outcomes of
neurodegeneration by targeting this binding and
aggregation process.

Blending TiO2 and cement to create photocatalytic
composites holds promise for low-cost, durable water
treatment. However, the efficiency of such composites
hinges on cross-effects of several parameters such as
cement composition, type of photocatalyst, and
microstructure, which are poorly understood and
require extensive combinatorial tests to discern.
Here, we report a new combinatorial data science
approach to understand the influence of various
photocatalytic cement composites based on limited
datasets. Using P25 nanoparticles and submicron-sized
anatase as representative TiO2 photocatalysts and
methyl orange and 1,4-dioxane as target organic
pollutants, we demonstrate that the cement composition
is a more influential factor on photocatalytic
activity than the cement microstructure and TiO2 type
and particle size. Among the various cement
constituents, belite and ferrite had strong inverse
correlation with photocatalytic activity, while
natural rutile had a positive correlation, which
suggests optimization opportunities by manipulating
the cement composition. These results were discerned
by screening 7806 combinatorial functions that capture
cross-effects of multiple compositional phases and
obtaining correlation scores. We also report •OH
radical generation, cement aging effects, TiO2
leaching, and strategies to regenerate photocatalytic
surfaces for reuse. This work provides several
nonintuitive correlations and insights on the effect
of cement composition and structure on performance,
thus advancing our knowledge on development of
scalable photocatalytic materials for drinking water
treatment in rural and resource-limited areas.

...Extracting the statistics from the Vaccine Adverse
Event Reporting System or VAERS data base system
reveals -- if not downright Orwellian, vaccine deaths

Solar-powered desalination unit shows great promise
Scientists report the development of a highly
efficient desalination device that uses a
titanium-containing layer capable of absorbing solar
energy. When sunlight strikes the layer, it heats
rapidly and vaporizes the water. By placing the unit
in a transparent container with a sloped quartz roof,
the water vapor can be condensed and collected.

or titanium nitride oxide, capable of absorbing solar
energy. The TiNO is deposited on a special type of
paper and foam that allows the solar absorber to float
on seawater.
When sunlight strikes the titanium layer, it heats
rapidly and vaporizes the water. By placing the unit
in a transparent container with a sloped quartz roof,
the water vapor can be condensed and collected,
producing a copious amount of freshwater.
"In the solar energy field, TiNO is a common
commercial solar absorbing coating, widely used in
solar hot water systems and in photovoltaic units,"
author Chao Chang said. "It has a high solar
absorption rate and a low thermal emittance and can
effectively convert solar energy into thermal energy."
The investigators developed a method for depositing a
layer of TiNO using a technique known as magnetron
sputtering. They used a special type of highly porous
paper known as airlaid paper that acts as a wicking
material to supply water from the seawater reservoir.
Airlaid paper is made from wood fibers and is commonly
used in disposable diapers.
The evaporation unit included three parts: the TiNO
layer on top, a thermal insulator, and the airlaid
paper on the bottom. The insulation layer is
polyethylene foam, which has many air-filled pores
that trap heat and allow the multi-layer unit to float
on top of a reservoir of seawater, minimizing heat
loss to the surroundings.
"The porous airlaid paper used as the substrate for
the TiNO solar absorber can be reused and recycled
more than 30 times," said Chang.
Salt precipitation on the TiNO surface could interfere
with efficiency, but the investigators found even
after a long time, no salt layer formed on the
surface. They suggest the porous nature of the paper
wicks away any salt that might form on the surface,
returning it to the seawater reservoir.
The salinity of ordinary seawater is over 75,000
milligrams of salt per liter. Ordinary drinking water
has a salinity of about 200 milligrams per liter. The
desalination unit was able to decrease the seawater
salinity to less than 2 milligrams per liter....

ABSTRACT
Freshwater scarcity, one of the most serious
global challenges, has threatened the development of
society in many regions. Solar-driven interfacial
evaporation localizing solar-to-thermal energy
conversion at the vapor–liquid interface provides a
new approach for seawater desalination. In this work,
we reported a high-efficiency porous TiNO solar
absorber for a solar-driven interfacial evaporation
system. The solar absorber was prepared by depositing
a solar absorbing coating of TiNO on air-laid paper.
Hydrophilicity and porosity of the absorber provide
sufficient capillary force to absorb water to the
evaporation region, thus resulting in rapid
replenishment of water and simultaneously avoiding
salt precipitation. Based on the TiNO solar absorber,
the interfacial evaporation system achieves a high
evaporation rate of 1.33 kg m−2 h−1 with an
evaporation efficiency of 84.05% under 1 sun
illumination and has good durability under long-time
solar irradiation. Such a low-cost, high-efficiency
solar-driven seawater desalination system holds the
potential for rapid deployment in remote areas or
isolated islands to collect freshwater.
