Stanford researchers at the Fan Group have designed and tested a highly efficient radiative cooler prototype with the following record-breaking performance results:
Temperature drop of 42 degrees Celsius (and theoretical drop of 60 degrees C) which approaches the fundamental limit on cooling. Daytime performance surpassed previous record by almost an order of magnitude. Nighttime performance, carried out in a populous area at sea level, significantly exceed previous record carried out at a mountain-top desert. This work demonstrates significant potential for radiative cooling, which can have practical impacts ranging from passive building cooling, renewable energy harvesting, and passive refrigeration in arid regions.

Discovery and characterization of antitumor gut microbiota from amphibians and reptiles: Ewingella americana as a novel therapeutic agent with dual cytotoxic and immunomodulatory properties

ABSTRACT -- The utilization of gut microbiota in cancer therapy has attracted considerable attention as an emerging therapeutic frontier. In this study, we systematically evaluated the antitumor effects of nine bacterial strains isolated from the intestines of amphibians (Dryophytes japonicus and Cynops pyrrhogaster) and a reptile (Takydromus tachydromoides). Among the isolates, Ewingella americana exhibited remarkably potent cytotoxic activity with selective tumor-targeting ability characteristic of facultative anaerobic bacteria. Mechanistic investigations revealed that E. americana functions through a dual-action mechanism: direct tumor cell killing and robust activation of host immunity, leading to enhanced T cell, neutrophil, and B cell-mediated tumor attack. Treatment with E. americana significantly outperformed standard therapies, including anti-PD-L1 antibody and doxorubicin, in tumor regression studies. Importantly, comprehensive safety evaluations in murine models demonstrated that the gut-derived E. americana strain exhibits minimal pathogenicity and exerts no significant adverse effects at therapeutically effective doses, contrasting favorably with genetically modified bacterial therapeutics. Comparative analysis revealed superior therapeutic efficacy of E. americana over conventional treatments while maintaining an excellent safety profile. These findings suggest that gut microbiomes of lower vertebrates harbor numerous uncharacterized bacterial species with exceptional therapeutic potential. UBC researchers have developed a natural, biodegradable wash that removed over 86 per cent of surface pesticide residue from tested fruit and slowed browning and moisture loss.
This could mean safer apples, grapes and other fruit that also stay crisp and fresh for days longer. With rising food prices and nearly half of all fresh produce wasted worldwide each year, finding a way to cut pesticide exposure and reduce spoilage could have a big impact. The findings were published in ACS Nano.
“Our goal was to create a simple, safe and affordable wash that improves both food safety and food quality,” said senior author Dr. Tianxi Yang, an assistant professor in UBC’s faculty of land and food systems. “People shouldn’t have to choose between eating fresh produce and worrying about what’s on it.”
A safe, plant‑based way to clean produce
While pesticide levels on fruits and vegetables are tightly regulated, trace residues often remain. For people who eat a lot of the same fruit or vegetables—like kids scarfing down big bowls of berries—the amount of residue can go over recommended limits. It was this concern, prompted by Dr. Yang’s son’s love of fresh blueberries, that sparked her search for a better way to clean fruit.
The new wash uses tiny particles made from starch—the same carbohydrate found in corn and potatoes—capped in iron and tannic acid. Tannic acid is a plant compound that gives tea and wine their dry taste. When iron and tannic acid join together, they form sticky, sponge‑like clusters that can grab onto pesticides and lift them off the fruit’s surface.
The team tested the wash by applying three commonly used pesticides to apples at typical, real-world concentrations of about 10 milligrams per litre.
In tests on apples, the wash removed between 86 and 94 per cent of these pesticides. Rinsing with tap water, baking soda or plain starch typically removes less than half.
A coating that keeps fruit fresher, longer
After washing, the fruit is dipped in the solution once again to form a light edible, biodegradable layer. Fresh‑cut apples treated with the coating browned much more slowly and lost less water over two days in the fridge. Whole grapes stayed plump for 15 days at room temperature, compared with noticeable shrivelling in untreated grapes.
“The coating acts like a breathable second skin. Measures of food quality like acidity and soluble sugars also remained higher in coated fruit,” said Dr. Yang.
The coating also showed antimicrobial effects, meaning it can inhibit harmful bacteria.
The study estimated that washing a medium apple in the solution would introduce a safe amount of iron, well below the daily upper limit for adults set by North American food authorities.
“Beyond safety and shelf life, our formulation uses micronutrients like iron and phenolic compounds that offer additional health benefits,” said Dr. Yang. “It doesn’t just reduce risk—it can also add nutritional value.”

Abstract -- Pesticide residues and postharvest losses threaten produce safety and quality, necessitating innovative and effective solutions. Herein, we developed a dual-action postharvest wash based on metal–phenolic network–capped starch nanoparticles (FTN@SNPs) to reduce surface pesticide residues while helping maintain produce quality during storage. FTN@SNPs were prepared by coordinating tannic acid (TA) with Fe3+ to form a metal–phenolic network (MPN) and capping the MPN onto starch nanoparticles. Wash performance was evaluated using SNPs concentrations of 0.5–1.25 wt % and varying FTN loadings, and the best performance was obtained at 1.0 wt % SNPs with 0.25 mM FTN. Comprehensive evaluations on fresh produce demonstrated that the FTN@SNP wash significantly reduced a range of surface pesticide residues, achieving over 86% removal of thiabendazole as quantified by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. The optimized formulation further achieved 93.51% and 89.03% removal of acetamiprid and imidacloprid, respectively, outperforming conventional wash solutions. Molecular dynamics simulations supported high pesticide–MPN affinity with binding energies of −32.40 kcal/mol (acetamiprid), −24.45 kcal/mol (imidacloprid), and −20.98 kcal/mol (thiabendazole), consistent with interactions dominated by π–π stacking, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals forces. In addition, the wash solution helped maintain postharvest quality of both whole and fresh-cut produce over 15 days of storage, as reflected in the visual appearance, weight loss, titratable acidity, and total soluble solids. This dual-action approach highlights the potential of the FTN@SNPs wash as a sustainable, biodegradable, and scalable strategy to improve food safety and minimize postharvest losses across the fresh produce supply chain.

ABSTRACT -- Current production of traditional concrete requires enormous energy investment that accounts for approximately 5 to 8% of the world’s annual CO2 production. Biocement is a building material that is already in industrial use and has the potential to rival traditional concrete as a more convenient and more environmentally friendly alternative. Biocement relies on biological structures (enzymes, cells, and/or cellular superstructures) to mineralize and bind particles in aggregate materials (e.g., sand and soil particles). Sporosarcina pasteurii is a workhorse organism for biocementation, but most research to date has focused on S. pasteurii as a building material rather than a biological system. In this review, we synthesize available materials science, microbiology, biochemistry, and cell biology evidence regarding biological CaCO3 precipitation and the role of microbes in microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) with a focus on S. pasteurii. Based on the available information, we provide a model that describes the molecular and cellular processes involved in converting feedstock material (urea and Ca2+) into cement. The model provides a foundational framework that we use to highlight particular targets for researchers as they proceed into optimizing the biology of MICP for biocement production.

ABSTRACT -- When a pulse of light traverses a material, it incurs a time delay referred to as the group delay. Should the group delay experienced by photons be attributed to the time they spend as atomic excitations? However reasonable this connection may seem, it appears problematic when the frequency of the light is close to the atomic resonance, as the group delay becomes negative in this regime. To address this question, we use the cross-Kerr effect to probe the degree of atomic excitation caused by a resonant transmitted photon, by measuring the phase shift on a separate beam that is weak and off-resonant. Our results, over a range of pulse durations and optical depths, are consistent with the recent theoretical prediction that the mean atomic excitation time caused by a transmitted photon (as measured via the time integral of the observed phase shift) equals the group delay experienced by the light. Specifically, we measure mean atomic excitation times ranging from for the most narrowband pulse to for the most broadband pulse, where is the non-post-selected excitation time, given by the scattering (absorption) probability multiplied by the atomic lifetime . These results suggest that negative values taken by times such as the group delay have more physical significance than has generally been appreciated.

A review on sustainable graphene production from rice husks: Strategies and key considerations

Abstract -- In this review, the history of the graphene and their excellent structure and properties were briefly explained. The form of graphene in different allotropes and derivatives were also discussed as each type possessed different structures and properties, that were important in specific applications depending the quality of the produced graphene. On top of that, the main sustainability issues arise in the different synthesis methods for fabrication of graphene and graphene-based materials were discussed and reviewed. This review also focused in finding the cost-efficient, environmental-friendly, energy efficient, and low carbon footprint graphene precursors as an insight for potential development of sustainable graphene materials. Rice husk as an abundant and cheap lignocellulosic biomass wastes with high content of cellulose is a great candidate for sustainable graphene precursor. The excellent morphological structure, physicochemical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of rice husks-derived graphene for utilization in wide-range of applications were discussed. The new radionics machine was much improved, for one thing is now contains a caduceus coil. Steven Gibbs calls this new device the Hyper Dimensional Resonator. Not content with the performance of the HDR Steven Gibbs continued to change it. He worked on finding ways to boost the power of the electromagnet and increase the diameter of the active magnetic field. The original Hyper Dimensional Resonator or HDR used a 10K resistor instead of a 15K resistor, and instead of the Radio Shack 1K blue capacitor we now have, it was a green .47 capacitor. There were only two rectifier diodes instead of six like now. The HDR electromagnet was not T-shaped like now. It was just a long cylindrical tube without the handles.

Temperature drop of 42 degrees Celsius (and theoretical drop of 60 degrees C) which approaches the fundamental limit on cooling. Daytime performance surpassed previous record by almost an order of magnitude. Nighttime performance, carried out in a populous area at sea level, significantly exceed previous record carried out at a mountain-top desert. ABSTRACT -- The utilization of gut microbiota in cancer therapy has attracted considerable attention as an emerging therapeutic frontier. In this study, we systematically evaluated the antitumor effects of nine bacterial strains isolated from the intestines of amphibians (Dryophytes japonicus and Cynops pyrrhogaster) and a reptile (Takydromus tachydromoides). Among the isolates, Ewingella americana exhibited remarkably potent cytotoxic activity with selective tumor-targeting ability characteristic of facultative anaerobic bacteria. Mechanistic investigations revealed that E. americana functions through a dual-action mechanism: direct tumor cell killing and robust activation of host immunity, leading to enhanced T cell, neutrophil, and B cell-mediated tumor attack. Treatment with E. americana significantly outperformed standard therapies, including anti-PD-L1 antibody and doxorubicin, in tumor regression studies. Importantly, comprehensive safety evaluations in murine models demonstrated that the gut-derived E. americana strain exhibits minimal pathogenicity and exerts no significant adverse effects at therapeutically effective doses, contrasting favorably with genetically modified bacterial therapeutics. Comparative analysis revealed superior therapeutic efficacy of E. americana over conventional treatments while maintaining an excellent safety profile. These findings suggest that gut microbiomes of lower vertebrates harbor numerous uncharacterized bacterial species with exceptional therapeutic potential. This could mean safer apples, grapes and other fruit that also stay crisp and fresh for days longer. With rising food prices and nearly half of all fresh produce wasted worldwide each year, finding a way to cut pesticide exposure and reduce spoilage could have a big impact. The findings were published in ACS Nano.
“Our goal was to create a simple, safe and affordable wash that improves both food safety and food quality,” said senior author Dr. Tianxi Yang, an assistant professor in UBC’s faculty of land and food systems. “People shouldn’t have to choose between eating fresh produce and worrying about what’s on it.”
A safe, plant‑based way to clean produce
While pesticide levels on fruits and vegetables are tightly regulated, trace residues often remain. For people who eat a lot of the same fruit or vegetables—like kids scarfing down big bowls of berries—the amount of residue can go over recommended limits. It was this concern, prompted by Dr. Yang’s son’s love of fresh blueberries, that sparked her search for a better way to clean fruit.
The new wash uses tiny particles made from starch—the same carbohydrate found in corn and potatoes—capped in iron and tannic acid. Tannic acid is a plant compound that gives tea and wine their dry taste. When iron and tannic acid join together, they form sticky, sponge‑like clusters that can grab onto pesticides and lift them off the fruit’s surface.
The team tested the wash by applying three commonly used pesticides to apples at typical, real-world concentrations of about 10 milligrams per litre.
In tests on apples, the wash removed between 86 and 94 per cent of these pesticides. Rinsing with tap water, baking soda or plain starch typically removes less than half.
A coating that keeps fruit fresher, longer
After washing, the fruit is dipped in the solution once again to form a light edible, biodegradable layer. Fresh‑cut apples treated with the coating browned much more slowly and lost less water over two days in the fridge. Whole grapes stayed plump for 15 days at room temperature, compared with noticeable shrivelling in untreated grapes.
“The coating acts like a breathable second skin. Measures of food quality like acidity and soluble sugars also remained higher in coated fruit,” said Dr. Yang.
The coating also showed antimicrobial effects, meaning it can inhibit harmful bacteria.
The study estimated that washing a medium apple in the solution would introduce a safe amount of iron, well below the daily upper limit for adults set by North American food authorities.
“Beyond safety and shelf life, our formulation uses micronutrients like iron and phenolic compounds that offer additional health benefits,” said Dr. Yang. “It doesn’t just reduce risk—it can also add nutritional value.”

Abstract -- Pesticide residues and postharvest losses threaten produce safety and quality, necessitating innovative and effective solutions. Herein, we developed a dual-action postharvest wash based on metal–phenolic network–capped starch nanoparticles (FTN@SNPs) to reduce surface pesticide residues while helping maintain produce quality during storage. FTN@SNPs were prepared by coordinating tannic acid (TA) with Fe3+ to form a metal–phenolic network (MPN) and capping the MPN onto starch nanoparticles. Wash performance was evaluated using SNPs concentrations of 0.5–1.25 wt % and varying FTN loadings, and the best performance was obtained at 1.0 wt % SNPs with 0.25 mM FTN. Comprehensive evaluations on fresh produce demonstrated that the FTN@SNP wash significantly reduced a range of surface pesticide residues, achieving over 86% removal of thiabendazole as quantified by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. The optimized formulation further achieved 93.51% and 89.03% removal of acetamiprid and imidacloprid, respectively, outperforming conventional wash solutions. Molecular dynamics simulations supported high pesticide–MPN affinity with binding energies of −32.40 kcal/mol (acetamiprid), −24.45 kcal/mol (imidacloprid), and −20.98 kcal/mol (thiabendazole), consistent with interactions dominated by π–π stacking, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals forces. In addition, the wash solution helped maintain postharvest quality of both whole and fresh-cut produce over 15 days of storage, as reflected in the visual appearance, weight loss, titratable acidity, and total soluble solids. This dual-action approach highlights the potential of the FTN@SNPs wash as a sustainable, biodegradable, and scalable strategy to improve food safety and minimize postharvest losses across the fresh produce supply chain.

In this review, we synthesize available materials science, microbiology, biochemistry, and cell biology evidence regarding biological CaCO3 precipitation and the role of microbes in microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) with a focus on S. pasteurii. Based on the available information, we provide a model that describes the molecular and cellular processes involved in converting feedstock material (urea and Ca2+) into cement. The model provides a foundational framework that we use to highlight particular targets for researchers as they proceed into optimizing the biology of MICP for biocement production.

ABSTRACT -- When a pulse of light traverses a material, it incurs a time delay referred to as the group delay. Should the group delay experienced by photons be attributed to the time they spend as atomic excitations? However reasonable this connection may seem, it appears problematic when the frequency of the light is close to the atomic resonance, as the group delay becomes negative in this regime. To address this question, we use the cross-Kerr effect to probe the degree of atomic excitation caused by a resonant transmitted photon, by measuring the phase shift on a separate beam that is weak and off-resonant. Our results, over a range of pulse durations and optical depths, are consistent with the recent theoretical prediction that the mean atomic excitation time caused by a transmitted photon (as measured via the time integral of the observed phase shift) equals the group delay experienced by the light. Specifically, we measure mean atomic excitation times ranging from for the most narrowband pulse to for the most broadband pulse, where is the non-post-selected excitation time, given by the scattering (absorption) probability multiplied by the atomic lifetime . These results suggest that negative values taken by times such as the group delay have more physical significance than has generally been appreciated.

A review on sustainable graphene production from rice husks: Strategies and key considerations

Abstract -- In this review, the history of the graphene and their excellent structure and properties were briefly explained. The form of graphene in different allotropes and derivatives were also discussed as each type possessed different structures and properties, that were important in specific applications depending the quality of the produced graphene. On top of that, the main sustainability issues arise in the different synthesis methods for fabrication of graphene and graphene-based materials were discussed and reviewed. This review also focused in finding the cost-efficient, environmental-friendly, energy efficient, and low carbon footprint graphene precursors as an insight for potential development of sustainable graphene materials. Rice husk as an abundant and cheap lignocellulosic biomass wastes with high content of cellulose is a great candidate for sustainable graphene precursor. The excellent morphological structure, physicochemical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of rice husks-derived graphene for utilization in wide-range of applications were discussed. This review also concluded on the future insights and perspectives of the rice husk-derived graphene.

Time accelerator... Steven Gibbs says that if you use the south pole field in your HDR, it can send you to astral hell. This is not a pleasant place. Lower astral realms resemble earth in some ways. Sadly, much like here there is a lot of violence and crime... The Hyper Dimensional Resonator is a device invented by Steven L. Gibbs in 1985. At that time Steven Gibbs was living on a farm in Nebraska. He basically improved on an earlier device called the Sonic Resonator which he built in 1981. The Sonic Resonator is the prior prototype of the new Hyper Dimensional Resonator or HDR and the Sonic Resonator did not generate a magnetic field as powerful as the HDR. In fact, Steven Gibbs says that the old sonic resonator required a barium oxide bar magnet to be use in conjunction with the electromagnet. The new radionics machine was much improved, for one thing is now contains a caduceus coil. Steven Gibbs calls this new device the Hyper Dimensional Resonator. Not content with the performance of the HDR Steven Gibbs continued to change it. He worked on finding ways to boost the power of the electromagnet and increase the diameter of the active magnetic field. The original Hyper Dimensional Resonator or HDR used a 10K resistor instead of a 15K resistor, and instead of the Radio Shack 1K blue capacitor we now have, it was a green .47 capacitor. There were only two rectifier diodes instead of six like now. The HDR electromagnet was not T-shaped like now. It was just a long cylindrical tube without the handles.
Also the old electromagnet of the HDR used Radio Shack speaker wire back then, whereas now it uses 21 gauge copper magnet wire. ..
