New DNA test slashes brain tumor diagnosis time
from 8 weeks to just 2 hours
The new method uses a technology called nanopore
sequencing, which can quickly read the DNA of a tumor.
It works by passing strands of DNA through a tiny device
filled with microscopic holes, or pores. As the tumor’s
genetic material is fed through the pores, the DNA
strands are separated and pulled through one at a time.
These changes help identify the order of the DNA’s
building blocks. Once the DNA is read, special software
developed by the researchers compares it to a library of
known brain tumor types. This helps doctors quickly
figure out what kind of tumor a patient has, often
within just a few hours.

created a material with the perfect balance of

Abstract -- Condensation of water vapor in
confined geometries, known as capillary condensation, is
a fundamental phenomenon with far-reaching implications.
While hydrophilic pores enable liquid formation from
undersaturated vapor without energy input, the
condensate typically remains confined, limiting
practical utility. Here, we explore the use of
amphiphilic nanoporous polymer-infiltrated nanoparticle
films that condense and release liquid water under
isothermal and undersaturated conditions. By tuning the
polymer fraction and nanoparticle size, we optimize
condensation and droplet formation. As vapor pressure
increases, voids fill with condensate, which
subsequently exudes onto the surface as microscopic
droplets. This behavior, enabled by a balance of polymer
hydrophobicity and capillarity, reveals how amphiphilic
nanostructures can drive accessible water collection.
Our findings provide design insights for materials
supporting energy-efficient water harvesting and heat
management without external input.

(Zn) and manganese dioxide (MnO₂) electrodes, becomes a

A research team led by Dr. Bon-Cheol Ku and Dr. Seo Gyun
Kim of the Carbon Composite Materials Research Center at
the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and
Professor Yuanzhe Piao of Seoul National University
(SNU) has developed a high-performance supercapacitor
that is expected to become the next generation of energy
storage devices. The technology developed by the
researchers overcomes the limitations of existing
supercapacitors by utilizing an innovative fiber
structure composed of single-walled carbon nanotubes
(CNTs) and the conductive polymer polyaniline (PANI).
..supercapacitors offer faster charging and higher power
density, with less degradation over tens of thousands of
charge and discharge cycles. However, their relatively
low energy density limits their use over long periods of
time, which has limited their use in practical
applications such as electric vehicles and drones.
To solve this problem, the researchers uniformly
chemically bonded single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs),
which are highly conductive, with polyaniline (PANI),
which is processable and inexpensive, at the nanoscale.
This creates a sophisticated fiber structure that
simultaneously enhances the flow of electrons and ions,
resulting in a supercapacitor that can store more energy
while releasing it at a faster rate.
The developed supercapacitor has been shown to maintain
stable performance even after more than 100,000 charge
and discharge tests and is durable even in high-voltage

information-theoretic equation that generalizes a
large collection of mod- ern loss functions in
machine learning. In particular, we introduce a
framework that shows that several broad classes of
machine learning methods are precisely minimizing an
integrated KL divergence between two conditional
distributions: the supervisory and learned
representations. This viewpoint exposes a hidden
information geometry underlying clustering, spectral
methods, dimensionality re- duction, contrastive
learning, and supervised learning. This framework
enables the development of new loss functions by
combining successful techniques from across the
literature. We not only present a wide array of
proofs, connecting over 23 different approaches, but
we also leverage these theoretical results to create
state-of-the-art unsupervised image classifiers that
achieve a +8% improvement over the prior
state-of-the-art on unsupervised classification on
ImageNet-1K. We also demonstrate that I-Con can be
used to derive principled debiasing methods which
improve contrastive representation learners.
