Real-Space Observation of Magnon Interaction with Driven Space-Time Crystals

Abstract -- The concept of space-time crystals (STC), i.e., translational symmetry breaking in time and space, was recently proposed and experimentally demonstrated for quantum systems. Here, we transfer this concept to magnons and experimentally demonstrate a driven STC at room temperature. The STC is realized by strong homogeneous microwave pumping of a micron-sized permalloy (Py) stripe and is directly imaged by scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM). For a fundamental understanding of the formation of the STC, micromagnetic simulations are carefully adapted to model the experimental findings. Beyond the mere generation of a STC, we observe the formation of a magnonic band structure due to back folding of modes at the STC’s Brillouin zone boundaries. We show interactions of magnons with the STC that appear as lattice scattering, which results in the generation of ultrashort spin waves (SW) down to 100-nm wavelengths that cannot be described by classical dispersion relations for linear SW excitation. We expect that room-temperature STCs will be useful to investigate nonlinear wave physics, as they can be easily generated and manipulated to control their spatial and temporal band structures.

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this article is to compare and contrast two forms of childbirth education: HypnoBirthing (the Mongan Method) and the Bradley Method (husband-coached natural childbirth). Evidence was obtained using a formal literature review, reading published books and workbooks on the two methods, and attending classes to document content delivered. Similarities and differences in content are reported along with birth outcomes from evaluations of the two methods. Tables with this content were formatted so that they can be used by educators and providers.

Superextensive electrical power from a quantum battery
Abstract -- Superextensivity, where the response of a physical system scales super-linearly with size, originates from collective quantum effects and provides a promising route to augment next-generation quantum technologies. While recent work has demonstrated superextensive behaviour in the coherent dynamics of quantum systems, these effects typically occur on short timescales, prohibiting their practical utility. In contrast, triggering steady-state superextensive effects in, for example, a generated electric current, remains unexplored despite the immediate impact on photovoltaic technologies. Here, we utilise a microcavity quantum battery as an experimental platform that superextensively captures light energy and converts it to an electric current via the incorporation of charge transport layers into the resonant microcavity. This architecture enables, for the first time, a complete quantum battery charge-discharge cycle. We demonstrate that strong light–matter coupling induced by the microcavity leads to superextensive scaling of the steady-state electrical discharging power under low-intensity, incoherent illumination. Our results provide the first experimental demonstration of superextensive light-to-charge conversion in steady-state, highlighting the feasibility of leveraging strong light–matter coupling for enhanced energy harvesting under low-light conditions.

Association of Sugar Restriction in Utero Through Age 2 Years on Dementia Risk Later in Life

Abstract --
Background and objectives: Excess sugar intake in early life may affect long-term brain health, but evidence for dementia is limited. We used the abrupt end of UK sugar rationing in September 1953 as a natural experiment to test whether exposure to sugar rationing during different windows within the first 1,000 days from conception was associated with adult risk of all-cause dementia, Alzheimer disease (AD), and vascular dementia (VaD).
Results: Among 64,737 participants included in the analysis, the mean age at recruitment was 54.6 years, and 56.4% were women; 40,963 were exposed to sugar rationing during fetal and/or early-childhood life, and 23,774 were unexposed. Compared with unexposed individuals, sugar rationing in utero plus the first year of life was associated with lower hazards of all-cause dementia (HR, 0.79; 95% CI 0.66-0.94) and AD (HR, 0.77; 95% CI 0.59-1.00). Similar or slightly stronger associations were observed for exposure in utero plus 1-2 years (all-cause dementia: HR, 0.77; 95% CI 0.63-0.95; AD: HR, 0.72; 95% CI 0.53-0.98). Exposure in utero plus 1-2 years was associated with delayed onset of all-cause dementia by 2.55 years, AD by 2.87 years, and VaD by 2.49 years. Early-life sugar rationing was also associated with higher total gray matter volume (β, 3.27; 95% CI 0.46-6.07), lower white matter hyperintensity volume (β, -0.64; 95% CI -0.97 to -0.31), and better performance in processing speed and reasoning. Incident type 2 diabetes and hypertension jointly mediated 25.5% of the association.
Discussion: Sugar restriction in the first 1,000 days was associated with lower dementia hazards, delayed onset, and more favorable brain-health profiles. These results support early-life sugar reduction as a potential strategy for dementia prevention.

Real-Space Observation of Magnon Interaction with Driven Space-Time Crystals

Abstract -- The concept of space-time crystals (STC), i.e., translational symmetry breaking in time and space, was recently proposed and experimentally demonstrated for quantum systems. Here, we transfer this concept to magnons and experimentally demonstrate a driven STC at room temperature. The STC is realized by strong homogeneous microwave pumping of a micron-sized permalloy (Py) stripe and is directly imaged by scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM). For a fundamental understanding of the formation of the STC, micromagnetic simulations are carefully adapted to model the experimental findings. Beyond the mere generation of a STC, we observe the formation of a magnonic band structure due to back folding of modes at the STC’s Brillouin zone boundaries. We show interactions of magnons with the STC that appear as lattice scattering, which results in the generation of ultrashort spin waves (SW) down to 100-nm wavelengths that cannot be described by classical dispersion relations for linear SW excitation. We expect that room-temperature STCs will be useful to investigate nonlinear wave physics, as they can be easily generated and manipulated to control their spatial and temporal band structures.

Superextensive electrical power from a quantum battery
Abstract -- Superextensivity, where the response of a physical system scales super-linearly with size, originates from collective quantum effects and provides a promising route to augment next-generation quantum technologies. While recent work has demonstrated superextensive behaviour in the coherent dynamics of quantum systems, these effects typically occur on short timescales, prohibiting their practical utility. In contrast, triggering steady-state superextensive effects in, for example, a generated electric current, remains unexplored despite the immediate impact on photovoltaic technologies. Here, we utilise a microcavity quantum battery as an experimental platform that superextensively captures light energy and converts it to an electric current via the incorporation of charge transport layers into the resonant microcavity. This architecture enables, for the first time, a complete quantum battery charge-discharge cycle. We demonstrate that strong light–matter coupling induced by the microcavity leads to superextensive scaling of the steady-state electrical discharging power under low-intensity, incoherent illumination. Our results provide the first experimental demonstration of superextensive light-to-charge conversion in steady-state, highlighting the feasibility of leveraging strong light–matter coupling for enhanced energy harvesting under low-light conditions.

Background and objectives: Excess sugar intake in early life may affect long-term brain health, but evidence for dementia is limited. We used the abrupt end of UK sugar rationing in September 1953 as a natural experiment to test whether exposure to sugar rationing during different windows within the first 1,000 days from conception was associated with adult risk of all-cause dementia, Alzheimer disease (AD), and vascular dementia (VaD).
Results: Among 64,737 participants included in the analysis, the mean age at recruitment was 54.6 years, and 56.4% were women; 40,963 were exposed to sugar rationing during fetal and/or early-childhood life, and 23,774 were unexposed. Compared with unexposed individuals, sugar rationing in utero plus the first year of life was associated with lower hazards of all-cause dementia (HR, 0.79; 95% CI 0.66-0.94) and AD (HR, 0.77; 95% CI 0.59-1.00). Similar or slightly stronger associations were observed for exposure in utero plus 1-2 years (all-cause dementia: HR, 0.77; 95% CI 0.63-0.95; AD: HR, 0.72; 95% CI 0.53-0.98). Exposure in utero plus 1-2 years was associated with delayed onset of all-cause dementia by 2.55 years, AD by 2.87 years, and VaD by 2.49 years. Early-life sugar rationing was also associated with higher total gray matter volume (β, 3.27; 95% CI 0.46-6.07), lower white matter hyperintensity volume (β, -0.64; 95% CI -0.97 to -0.31), and better performance in processing speed and reasoning. Incident type 2 diabetes and hypertension jointly mediated 25.5% of the association.
Discussion: Sugar restriction in the first 1,000 days was associated with lower dementia hazards, delayed onset, and more favorable brain-health profiles. These results support early-life sugar reduction as a potential strategy for dementia prevention.
