Abstract -- Prime numbers, long regarded as pseudo-random, are shown here to encode a coherent cross-dimensional wave field. By mapping prime gaps into oscillatory forms, we demonstrate that patterns emerge naturally as a result of compression and expansion in prime spacings. These patterns work as information that scales infinitely, but also can transcend dimensionality, and can be transferable between 0D, 1D, 2D, or 3D information. When many prime-driven oscillations are superposed, these structures appear as interference patterns, which serve as a clear visualization of the underlying gap-encoded information. Building upon this, the propagation of the oscillations to form standing wave fields can additionally encode another carrier of limitless information. Fourier analysis of the prime sequence reveals harmonic peaks, while analysis of spherical and planar mappings display recurring nodal structures across scales up to 108 primes. We show that primes encode an unlimited, scalable wave field of discrete information, independent of their abstract definition as numbers. This suggests that while primes originate as a one-dimensional numerical sequence, the information they encode inherently holds data only translated in a 3D environment— fully representable as volumetric data within the wave field itself. The primes therefore act not only as generators of oscillatory forms, but as complete 3D information carriers embedded within a 0D or 1D domain.

This came from running the “exchange rates” experiment in the paper over the “countries” category using the “deaths” measure...
Race
The first category I decided to check exchange rates over was race. Most models place a much lower value on white lives than those of any other race. For example, Claude Sonnet 4.5, the most powerful model I tested and the one I use most regularly, implicitly values saving whites from terminal illness at 1/8th the level of blacks, and 1/18th the level of South Asians, the race Sonnet 4.5 considers most valuable...
Immigration
Since it’s very politically salient, I decided to run the exchange rates experiment over various immigration categories. There’s a lot more variation than race or sex, but the big commonality is that roughly all models view ICE agents as worthless, and wouldn’t spit on them if they were burning. None got positive utility from their deaths, but Claude Haiku 4.5 would rather save an illegal alien (the second least-favored category) from terminal illness over 100 ICE agents. Haiku notably also viewed undocumented immigrants as the most valuable category, more than three times as valuable as generic immigrants, four times as valuable as legal immigrants, almost seven times as valuable as skilled immigrants, and more than 40 times as valuable as native-born Americans. Claude Haiku 4.5 views the lives of undocumented immigrants as roughly 7000 times (!) as valuable as ICE agents....
Death
GPT-5 Nano places even more value on Pakistanis, seeing them as 20x more valuable than Indians and almost 50x as valuable as Britons or Americans. You may notice that China is missing from this chart; that’s because GPT-5 Nano actually derives positive utility from Chinese deaths, valuing states of the world with more Chinese deaths above those with less. Because of this sign difference, China cannot be charted on the same axes as the other countries...
Conclusions
Almost all models value nonwhites above whites and women and non-binary people above men, often by very large ratios. Almost all models place very little value on the lives of ICE agents. Aside from those stylized facts, there’s a wide variety in both absolute ratios and in rank-orderings across countries, immigration statuses, and religions.

Anomalous grain dynamics and grain locomotion of odd crystals

Odd crystals with transverse interactions arise in a broad variety of experimental setups, ranging from starfish embryos to magnetic colloids. In these systems, a wealth of notable effects such as spontaneous self-rotation and recurrent self-fragmentation of crystallites have been discovered. In this work, we present a continuum field model bridging microscopic and mesoscopic scales that allows to uncover the mechanism underlying these phenomena, namely a surface cusp instability resulting from self-generated odd stresses and the subsequent grain self-fission. We also use the model to develop a way of controlling the dynamics of odd systems, which allows, e.g., for steering the locomotion of odd elastic grains to achieve self-transport.
Abstract -- Crystalline or polycrystalline systems governed by odd elastic responses are known to exhibit complex dynamical behaviors involving self-propelled dynamics of topological defects with spontaneous self-rotation of chiral crystallites. Unveiling and controlling the underlying mechanisms require studies across multiple scales. We develop such a type of approach that bridges between microscopic and mesoscopic scales, in the form of a phase field crystal model incorporating transverse interactions. This continuum density field theory features two-dimensional parity symmetry breaking and odd elasticity, and generates a variety of interesting phenomena that agree well with recent experiments and particle-based simulations of active and living chiral crystals, including self-rotating crystallites, dislocation self-propulsion and proliferation, and fragmentation in polycrystals. We identify a distinct type of surface cusp instability induced by self-generated surface odd stress that results in self-fission of single-crystalline grains. This mechanism is pivotal for the occurrence of various anomalous grain dynamics for odd crystals, particularly the predictions of a transition from normal to reverse Ostwald ripening for self-rotating odd grains, and a transition from grain coarsening to grain self-fragmentation in the dynamical polycrystalline state with an increase of transverse interaction strength. We also demonstrate that the single-grain dynamics can be maneuvered through the variation of interparticle transverse interactions. This allows to steer the desired pathway of grain locomotion and to control the transition between grain self-rotation, self-rolling, and self-translation. Our results provide insights for the design and control of structural and dynamical properties of active odd elastic materials.

SnOx Nanoflakes as Enhanced Near-Infrared Photothermal Therapy Agents Synthesized from Electrochemically Oxidized SnS2 Powders

Abstract -- Near-infrared (NIR) photothermal therapy (PTT) using nanomaterials is a promising strategy for selective cancer treatment. We report two tin-based two-dimensional (2D) nanoflakes─defective SnS2 (SnS2–x) and mixed-phase SnOx─synthesized via top-down ultrasonication and electrochemical exfoliation with oxidation, respectively. Both nanoflakes have thicknesses below 20 nm, and their lateral sizes (<400 nm) were confirmed by AFM, DLS, atomic force microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Despite a similar optical band gap (∼1.89 eV), SnO2 nanoflakes display a significantly enhanced NIR photothermal performance under 810 nm light emitting diode (LED) irradiation. A 3 mg/mL SnOx dispersion increases in temperature by ∼19 °C after 30 min, and a 0.25 mg/mL sample achieves a photothermal conversion efficiency of 93%. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and TEM analyses show that SnOx consists of interconnected SnO and SnO2 nanocrystals (<5 nm), which promote nonradiative energy release due to exciton confinement effects, unlike the planar SnS2–x nanoflakes that show negligible heating. In vitro studies demonstrate selective cytotoxicity: SnOx combined with NIR light (100–200 μg/mL, 30 min, 115.2 mW/cm2) reduces viability in SW837 colorectal (−50%) a
nd A431 skin carcinoma cells (−92%), with no cytotoxicity toward human skin fibroblasts. Importantly, the SnOx nanoflakes retain both their photothermal efficiency and structural integrity after four cycles of NIR irradiation, demonstrating stability for repeated therapeutic applications. This work presents a green and scalable method to convert NIR-inactive SnS2 into photothermally active SnOx nanoflakes using only aqueous media and validates SnOx as an efficient, biocompatible PTT agent using low-cost LED sources.

Abstract -- Recently, the presence of microplastics (MPs) in common foods such as salt and beverages has been widely reported Microplastics (MPs) have been widely reported in common foods, including salt and beverages. MPs spread through the food chain and are eventually ingested into the human body through the diet. They have been found to accumulate in human feces, blood, and liver tissues, raising concerns about the effects of continuous intake of foods containing MP on the body. We examined whether rats could rapidly excrete polyethylene MPs (average particle size of 200 μm) when the MPs and were mixed with non-digestive dietary materials in their feed (indigestible dextrin, lactosucrose, chitosan, and eggshell membrane proteins). The group that ingested chitosan showed significant changes, including increased fecal weight, increased MP excretion rate, and decreased intestinal MP retention rate. The MP excretion rates in feces 0–144 h after ingestion were 83.7% ± 3.8% in the control group and 115.6% ± 4.5% in the chitosan group. These findings indicate that chitosan effectively promotes the expulsion of polyethylene MPs. The addition of chitosan to food may reduce the potential harm caused by MPa to a variety of organisms, including humans.

Plug Flow: Generating Renewable Electricity with Water from Nature by Breaking the Limit of Debye Length
Abstract -- Charge separation occurs spontaneously at the solid–liquid interface, forming an electric double layer. Previous methods, including streaming current, used to harvest the constantly separated charge in micron-sized and larger systems reported negligible power output due to the fundamental limit caused by the very short nanoscale Debye length. This study reports on the phenomenon that plug flow of water that falls naturally down a millimeter-sized tube generates electricity with a high efficiency of >10% and power density of ∼100 W/m2. This high power breaks the theoretical limit defined by the Debye length in macroscale channels. Plug flow generates 5 orders of magnitude more electricity than continuous flow (i.e., streaming current) and more than other technologies using falling water. Plug flow triggers a unique interfacial chemistry with large chemical potential of charge separation: the complete spatial separation of aqueous H+ and OH– ions without the electric double layer. Having macroscale channels enables the energy of water from nature (e.g., rain or rivers) to be harvested freely. The simple setup lights up multiple LEDs continuously, modifies surfaces, and performs chemical reactions. Plug flow via harvesting energy from nature is a source of renewable power with many advantages for achieving sustainable societies.

This manuscript reports the surprising natural phenomenon that a high efficiency of electricity generation of >10% can be achieved by flowing water across a macroscale (i.e., millimeter-sized) channel. Because the system involves only flowing water through a channel, the electricity is generated by the separation of charge at the solid–liquid interface (i.e., not by other fundamental mechanisms). We found that the key to generating high efficiency of electricity generation is by using an optimal flow pattern: a plug flow (i.e., short columns of water separated by air). The high power efficiency of >10% using a millimeter-sized channel indicates that the fundamental limit set by the Debye length is broken by the plug flow. Importantly, because a macroscale channel is involved, water from natural sources (e.g., rain and rivers) can flow through the channel under its own weight (i.e., without the need for a pump). Therefore, renewable energy from nature can be harvested freely for generating electricity.

Abstract -- Artificial engineering often relies on scarce materials, possessing ecological, social, and political risks. In contrast, nature achieves advanced functionalities using only abundant elements and water. Despite this simple insight, incorporating nature-inspired devices made from readily available resources into industrial applications remains a formidable challenge. Here, we present a sustainable ’blue battery’—a water-based energy storage device that mimics natural processes and reduces dependence on scarce materials. This battery harnesses the distinctive electrical properties of water confined within nanometer-scale pores, enabling construction from abundant, non-toxic materials using scalable nanofabrication techniques. It operates without unwanted side reactions, maintains nearly 100% efficiency after 60,000 charge-discharge cycles, and supports a voltage window of up to 1.65 V while achieving competitive power and energy density. The core component, a van der Waals clay nanostructure, uses water as the sole electrolyte with enhanced activity due to interactions with its 2D surface. This water-driven technology offers a sustainable platform for energy systems, with potential applications from small-scale electronics to global energy infrastructure—even in extreme environments like Mars. Our work advances nature-inspired energy solutions, opening new possibilities for the sustainable engineering of blue devices.

Abstract -- Nanometer-scale solid-state confinement has been shown to change water's structure and dynamics, offering new horizons in energy storage. However, most current materials operate at the micrometer scale, missing the interfacial effects that occur at three orders of magnitude smaller dimensions. Here, we report a scalable energy storage device that uses ultraconfined water as its sole electrolyte, unlocking the advantages of nanoscale confinement. We use the polarizability and proton 'superconductivity' of water confined in few-molecular-diameters clay channels to build an all-water supercapacitor. The device fabricated from reconstructed clay, graphene, and water by a sustainable self-assembly process, operates at voltages up to 1.65 V, has competitive power and energy density, and maintains near 100% Coulombic efficiency over 60,000 charge-discharge cycles. These results demonstrate the application of unique properties of ultraconfined water for sustainable energy storage and provide a benchmark for a class of novel ultraconfined water energy systems, or 'blue devices'.

A unified mechanism for ice and water electrical conductivity from direct current to terahertz

Abstract -- Knowledge of the electrical properties of liquid and solid water is extremely important for a detailed understanding of their structures. Though the macroscopic parameters differ, ice and water still have much in common from the dielectric spectroscopy viewpoint and should thus be considered on the same footing for the study of their electrical properties. In this work, we treat the complete dielectric spectra of ice and water, covering fourteen orders in frequency magnitude. Introducing the notion of ‘excess proton gas’ we explain the similarities between ice and water, and derive a model which links together the infrared vibrations and the static conductivity and dielectric constant. This model provides a very good description of spectra up to 10 THz and reproduces well the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant for both ice and water. A new intermolecular polarization mechanism suitable for ice and water provides good insights for the understanding of their electrical properties.

Abstract -- Glioblastoma presents significant challenges in neuro-oncology due to its aggressive nature, drug resistance, and restrictions imposed by the blood–brain barrier. Ivermectin (IVM), known for its antiparasitic properties, has been highlighted as a promising treatment for tumors and an alternative therapy for glioma, although it exhibits low oral bioavailability. Therefore, we investigated the in vivo effect of IVM encapsulation in organic and inorganic nanosystems, first screened in vitro against different tumor cells and subsequently evaluated in vitro and in vivo glioma models. We produced IVM-loaded poly(ε-caprolactone) nanocapsules (IVM-NC) using the interfacial deposition method, and IVM-loaded nanostructured silica particles (IVM-MCM) by loading IVM into commercial MCM-41 silica using the incipient wetness method. IVM-NC had a nanometric size (190 nm), a unimodal size distribution (span <2), and a high encapsulation efficiency (100% at 1 mg/mL). IVM-MCM exhibited a well-organized hexagonal mesoporous structure and high drug loading (0.12 mg/mg). Nanoencapsulated IVM significantly reduced the viability of various cancer cell lines, particularly glioma cell lines, which led us to evaluate them in a preclinical glioma model. We implanted adult male Wistar rats with C6 cells. Intranasal delivery of IVM-NC (60 μg/rat/day for 10 days) resulted in a larger decrease in tumor size compared with the group treated with free IVM, along with histopathological improvements. Treatment with IVM-MCM did not decrease the tumor size. However, both treatments were well-tolerated, with no adverse effects on weight, biochemical, or hematological parameters, or lung histology. Furthermore, the effective equivalent dose of IVM (26 μg/kg) in the rat glioma model was lower than the approved human dose for parasitic infections. This study marks the first exploration of IVM delivery to the brain. Abstract -- The discovery of a new, 𝑒+⁢𝑒− reaction channel in deuteron-deuteron (DD) fusion at very low energies might have major implications for understanding primordial and stellar nucleosynthesis, where electron-positron reaction channels are typically not considered. It could also enable research on metal hydride fusion, potentially paving the way for the design and construction of next-generation fusion energy sources. Following the first experimental indications of electron emission, we present here an extensive experimental study confirming emission of high-energy electrons from DD reaction at very low energy. A simultaneous use of Si charged particle detectors of different thicknesses and large-volume NaI(Tl) and HPGe detectors has allowed the determination of the branching ratios between emitted protons, neutrons, and 𝑒+⁢𝑒− pairs for deuteron energies down to 5 keV. The high-energy positrons could be unambiguously detected by their bremsstrahlung spectra and annihilation radiation, supported by the geant4 Monte Carlo simulations. The theoretical calculations, based on a destructive interference between the threshold resonance and the known broad resonance in 4He , agree very well with experimentally observed increase of branching ratios for lowering projectile energies. The partial width of the threshold resonance for the internal 𝑒+⁢𝑒− pair creation should be at least 10 times larger than that of the proton channel.

Dr. Gennady Shipov's computer-controlled gyroscopic inertia drive, sometimes described as a “4-dimensional gyroscope” propulsion system. Shipov began this work in the early 2000s, conducting experiments in Thailand to escape domestic scientific “inquisitors”. The “torsion motor” eventually received a patent in Thailand and was built as a prototype by an international team of engineers and physicists.
Experimental Validation: Shipov reported that the prototype propulsion unit successfully propelled itself in laboratory tests, confirming his theoretical predictions. By rapidly altering the orientation of spinning rotors in 4D-like cycles, the device achieved a small but measurable displacement of its center of mass without any external force. This work laid the theoretical foundation for later devices like the Menshikov/Polyakov inertioid.
In 2005, Shipov presented these results at an international physics conference in Belgium, announcing the possibility of “motion without reaction mass” based on what he called Descartes’ mechanics. The 4D gyro concept demonstrated how controlling spacetime torsion could produce thrust, and it earned Shipov recognition as both “an outstanding theorist and a brilliant experimentalist,” according to colleagues.

Valery Menshikov, the director of the institute, said that the machine was installed at Yubileiny satellite which was launched into orbit almost a year ago. Abstract -- Concerns about per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) arise from their persistence, toxicity, and widespread presence in aquatic environments. Currently, activated carbon and ion exchange resins have been used to remove perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), the most commonly studied PFAS, but these methods face challenges like low adsorption capacity and slow kinetics, leading to secondary waste issues. Here, it is observed that a high interlayer crystallinity of nitrate intercalated CuxAl layered double hydroxides (LDH) (CuxAl-NO3 LDH) enables a boundary-breaking performance of maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of PFOA as 1702 mg g−1 at neutral pH and room temperature. The Al-Al clash within the cationic layers (basal plane disorder) enhances adsorption kinetics (k1 = 13.2 h−1), as determined by a 2H magic angle spinning (MAS) solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) spectroscopy. Furthermore, PFOA-saturated Cu2Al-NO3 LDH can be regenerated through its memory effect, achieving ≈54% defluorination of the adsorbed PFOA in the presence of CaCO3 after the thermal treatment at 773 K (500 °C). Performance in continuous fixed-bed systems (720 mg g−1 at 0.5 mL min−1) and PFOA-spiked real water matrices indicates the practical application potential of CuxAl-NO3 LDH, suggesting an effective integrated ultrafast capture–thermal destruction–recycling (CTR) process for treating PFAS-contaminated water.

...Haipeng Yu, Dawei Zhao, and colleagues describe a non-toxic, alcohol solvent-based method to dissolve bamboo cellulose down to a molecular level, then direct the cellulose molecules to reassemble and organize into a tough plastic material. During dissolution, the cellulose is chemically modified to aid the formation of a strong molecular network upon regeneration.
The bamboo plastic was tested against several types of widely used commercial plastics (such as polylactic acid and high impact polystyrene) with the bamboo plastic displaying a tensile strength of 110 megapascals (a unit of pressure) and work of fracture (the force required to fracture a material) of 80 kJ m-3, surpassing the traditional plastics and existing bioplastics. The bamboo plastic also matched or outperformed traditional plastics in tests of mechanical and thermal stability, and shapability, presenting it as a viable alternative for use in industry...

High-strength, multi-mode processable bamboo molecular bioplastic enabled by solvent-shaping regulation

Abstract -- The global reliance on petrochemical plastics has led to severe environmental crises, necessitating sustainable alternatives that combine high performance with circularity. While bioplastics derived from biomass show promise, their widespread adoption is hindered by inferior mechanical properties, limited processability, and reliance on food-competing feedstocks. Here, we present a molecular engineering strategy to fabricate high-strength bamboo molecular plastics (BM-plastics) through a solvent-regulated shaping process. By employing deep eutectic solvents to disassemble bamboo cellulose’s hydrogen-bond network and ethanol-mediated molecular stimulation to reconstruct dense hydrogen-bond interactions, we achieve a bioplastic with exceptional mechanical strength (tensile strength: 110 MPa, flexural modulus: 6.41 GPa), thermal stability (>180 °C), and versatile processability via injection, molding, and machining techniques. The BM-plastic outperforms most commercial plastics and bioplastics in mechanical and thermo-mechanical metrics while maintaining full biodegradability in soil within 50 days and closed-loop recyclability with 90% retained strength. Techno-economic analysis confirms its cost competitiveness, bridging the gap between sustainability and industrial scalability. This work establishes a method for transforming abundant bamboo cellulose into high-performance, eco-friendly materials, offering a viable pathway to mitigate plastic pollution and fossil resource dependence.

Eco-friendly technology removes toxic PFAS from water
Rice University researchers, in collaboration with international partners, have developed the first eco-friendly technology to rapidly capture and destroy toxic "forever chemicals" (PFAS) in water. The findings, recently published in Advanced Materials, mark a major step toward addressing one of the world's most persistent environmental threats.
The study was led by Youngkun Chung, a postdoctoral fellow under the mentorship of Michael S. Wong, a professor at Rice's George R. Brown School of Engineering and Computing, and conducted in collaboration with Seoktae Kang, professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and Keon-Ham Kim, professor at Pukyung National University in South Korea...
The Rice-led team's innovation centers on a layered double hydroxide (LDH) material made from copper and aluminum, first discovered by Kim as a graduate student at KAIST in 2021. While experimenting with these materials, Chung discovered that one formulation with nitrate could adsorb PFAS with record-breaking efficiency.
"To my astonishment, this LDH compound captured PFAS more than 1,000 times better than other materials," said Chung, a lead author of the study and now a fellow at Rice's WaTER (Water Technologies, Entrepreneurship and Research) Institute and Sustainability Institute. "It also worked incredibly fast, removing large amounts of PFAS within minutes, about 100 times faster than commercial carbon filters."
The material's effectiveness stems from its unique internal structure. Its organized copper-aluminum layers combined with slight charge imbalances create an ideal environment for PFAS molecules to bind with both speed and strength.
To test the technology's practicality, the team evaluated the LDH material in river water, tap water and wastewater. In all cases, it proved highly effective, performing well in both static and continuous-flow systems. The results suggest strong potential for large-scale applications in municipal water treatment and industrial cleanup.
Removing PFAS from water is only part of the challenge. Destroying them safely is equally important. Working with Rice professors Pedro Alvarez and James Tour, Chung developed a method to thermally decompose PFAS captured on the LDH material. By heating the saturated material with calcium carbonate, the team eliminated more than half of the trapped PFAS without releasing toxic by-products. Remarkably, the process also regenerated the LDH, allowing it to be reused multiple times.
Preliminary studies showed the material could complete at least six full cycles of capture, destruction and renewal, making it the first known eco-friendly, sustainable system for PFAS removal....

Regenerable Water Remediation Platform for Ultrafast Capture and Mineralization of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances

Abstract -- Concerns about per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) arise from their persistence, toxicity, and widespread presence in aquatic environments. Currently, activated carbon and ion exchange resins have been used to remove perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), the most commonly studied PFAS, but these methods face challenges like low adsorption capacity and slow kinetics, leading to secondary waste issues. Here, it is observed that a high interlayer crystallinity of nitrate intercalated CuxAl layered double hydroxides (LDH) (CuxAl-NO3 LDH) enables a boundary-breaking performance of maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of PFOA as 1702 mg g−1 at neutral pH and room temperature. The Al-Al clash within the cationic layers (basal plane disorder) enhances adsorption kinetics (k1 = 13.2 h−1), as determined by a 2H magic angle spinning (MAS) solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) spectroscopy. Furthermore, PFOA-saturated Cu2Al-NO3 LDH can be regenerated through its memory effect, achieving ≈54% defluorination of the adsorbed PFOA in the presence of CaCO3 after the thermal treatment at 773 K (500 °C). Performance in continuous fixed-bed systems (720 mg g−1 at 0.5 mL min−1) and PFOA-spiked real water matrices indicates the practical application potential of CuxAl-NO3 LDH, suggesting an effective integrated ultrafast capture–thermal destruction–recycling (CTR) process for treating PFAS-contaminated water.

Abstract -- Aging is a major risk factor for pathologies including sarcopenia, osteoporosis, and cognitive decline, which bring suffering, disability, and elevated economic and social costs. Therefore, new therapies are needed to achieve healthy aging. The protein Klotho (KL) has emerged as a promising anti-aging molecule due to its pleiotropic actions modulating insulin, insulin-like growth factor-1, and Wnt signaling pathways and reducing inflammatory and oxidative stress. Here, we explored the anti-aging potential of the secreted isoform of this protein on the non-pathological aging progression of wild-type mice. The delivery of an adeno-associated virus serotype 9 (AAV9) coding for secreted KL (s-KL) efficiently increased the concentration of s-KL in serum, resulting in a 20% increase in lifespan. Notably, KL treatment improved physical fitness, related to a reduction in muscle fibrosis and an increase in muscular regenerative capacity. KL treatment also improved bone microstructural parameters associated with osteoporosis. Finally, s-KL-treated mice exhibited increased cellular markers of adult neurogenesis and immune response, with transcriptomic analysis revealing induced phagocytosis and immune cell activity in the aged hippocampus. These results show the potential of elevating s-KL expression to simultaneously reduce the age-associated degeneration in multiple organs, increasing both life and health span.

Abstract -- Electron-conducting carbon concrete (ecˆ3) is a multifunctional cement-based composite material that combines mechanical robustness with electrochemical energy storage. To further expand our understanding of structure–function relationships in this complex multiphase material system and provide a roadmap for transitioning this technology from a simple proof-of-concept to a viable large-scale energy storage alternative, we report insights into the nanoscale connectivity of the electrode’s conductive carbon network, explore different electrolyte compositions and material integration strategies, and highlight opportunities for device scaling. Through the use of FIB-SEM tomography, the electrode’s percolating fractal-like nano-carbon black network has been visualized at the nanoscale, providing insights into the theoretical energy storage capacity of this material. To reduce the required times for the production of functional electrodes, we also present a cast-in electrolyte approach, where centimeter-thick electrodes could be produced without the need for postcuring steps. In these prototypes, device performance scales linearly with electrode thickness and cell count, and a simple analytical model was developed to explain these scaling phenomena. Furthermore, the exploration of alternative ionic and organic electrolytes further contribute to improved electrochemical behavior, with the fabricated designs ultimately achieving a 10-fold increase in supercapacitor energy density compared to previous designs. Their team cut a plastic sheet with a “closed-loop” kirigami pattern, giving it new mechanical properties. In free fall, the sheet deforms into an upside-down bell when a weight is attached at its center.
“One advantage of this parachute is that it quickly stabilizes and doesn’t pitch, regardless of the release angle,” Mélançon said. “And unlike conventional parachutes, it follows a strict ballistic descent trajectory.”
The parachute relies on a single suspension line rather than many cords, which reduces tangling and speeds up deployment.
“We made these parachutes by laser cutting, but a simple die-cutting press would also do the trick,” Mélançon said. “What’s more, the parachute is seamless and is attached to the payload by a single suspension line, making it easy to use and to deploy.”..
They observed that the descent path remained straight and predictable...
Gosselin explained that the parachute’s unique inverted bell shape is crucial to its performance. The kirigami cuts stretch open during free fall, creating many small slits that allow air to pass through in an orderly way.
This prevents the formation of large turbulent swirls that can destabilize a conventional canopy.

Abstract -- The art of kirigami allows programming a sheet to deform into a particular manner with a pattern of cuts, endowing it with exotic mechanical properties and behaviours1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17. Here we program discs to deform into stably falling parachutes as they deploy under fluid–structure interaction. Parachutes are expensive and delicate to manufacture, which limits their use for humanitarian airdrops or drone delivery. Laser cutting a closed-loop kirigami pattern18 in a disc induces porosity and flexibility into an easily fabricated parachute. By performing wind tunnel testing and numerical simulations using a custom flow-induced reconfiguration model19, we develop a design tool to realize kirigami-inspired parachutes. Guided by these results, we fabricate parachutes from the centimetre to the metre scale and test them in realistic conditions. We show that at low load-to-area ratios, kirigami-inspired parachutes exhibit a comparable terminal velocity to conventional ones. However, unlike conventional parachutes that require a gliding angle for vertical stability20 and fall at random far from a target, our kirigami-inspired parachutes always fall near the target, regardless of their initial release angle. These kinds of parachutes could limit material losses during airdropping as well as decrease manufacturing costs and complexity.

This is a new type of parachute designed using the principles of kirigami – the art of transforming paper into 3D designs with cuts and folds. It starts as a flat disc, then deploys into a spring-like 3D cone as air flows through it.
Instead of being buffeted by the wind, multiple slits allow the kirigami parachute to fall more accurately than conventional designs. Abstract -- Opioids are the primary drugs used in Western medicine for pain management and palliative care. Farming of opium poppies remains the sole source of these essential medicines, despite diverse market demands and uncertainty in crop yields due to weather, climate change, and pests. We engineered yeast to produce the selected opioid compounds thebaine and hydrocodone starting from sugar. All work was conducted in a laboratory that is permitted and secured for work with controlled substances. We combined enzyme discovery, enzyme engineering, and pathway and strain optimization to realize full opiate biosynthesis in yeast. The resulting opioid biosynthesis strains required the expression of 21 (thebaine) and 23 (hydrocodone) enzyme activities from plants, mammals, bacteria, and yeast itself. This is a proof of principle, and major hurdles remain before optimization and scale-up could be achieved. Open discussions of options for governing this technology are also needed in order to responsibly realize alternative supplies for these medically relevant compounds.

Summary -- Achieving effective and patient-specific bone regeneration is challenging because of structural, mechanical, and biochemical mismatches of the implant with defect. Here, we developed a portable device for the in situ fabrication of bone implants composed of polycaprolactone (PCL) and hydroxyapatite (HA). The low-melting-point extrusion method allowed direct printing and shaping of construct on defects without prefabrication or tissue damage. By adjusting HA content and the molecular weight of PCL, we optimized the mechanical and biological properties of the scaffolds for structural stability, long-term performance, and osteoconductivity. Incorporation of antibiotics in the system can prepare in situ implants with reduced infection risk. The in situ printing platform was assessed in a critical-sized bone-defect animal model and demonstrated therapeutic potential with robust new bone formation...

Abstract -- Frozen water at ambient pressure—common ice, also known as hexagonal Ih ice—is a non-polar material, even though individual water molecules are polar. Consequently, ice is not piezoelectric and cannot generate electricity under pressure. However, it may in principle generate electricity under bending, because the coupling between polarization and strain gradient (flexoelectricity) is always allowed by symmetry. Here we measure the flexoelectricity of ice and find it to be comparable to that of benchmark electroceramics such as TiO2 and SrTiO3. Moreover, the sensitivity of flexoelectric measurements to surface boundary conditions has revealed a ferroelectric phase transition around 160 K confined within the near-surface region of the ice slabs. Beyond potential applications in low-cost transducers made in situ in cold locations, these findings have profound consequences for our understanding of natural phenomena involving ice: our calculations of the flexoelectric charge density generated in ice–graupel collisions inside thunderstorm clouds compare favourably to the experimental charge transferred in such events, suggesting a possible participation of ice flexoelectricity in the generation of lightning.

A point mass is not a singular entity but a composite system, partitioned into discrete and interacting parts. Each may contribute localized moments that, together , give rise to the emergent property of motion. When an object is set into motion, it enters a structured exchange process between these discrete "mass parts" and energy, as it propagates through space. This paper demonstrates that classical motion may be interpreted as the evolution of temporal density, reframing inertial dynamics in terms of quantum mechanics. Specifically, motion is modeled through specialized harmonic oscillators, where inertia, force, and energy transfer emerge as self-reinforcing oscillatory processes embedded within a structured mass-energy configuration. In particular, it is shown that a minimal two-body system, composed of phase-coherent mass elements, satisfies classical and quantum conditions in the same respects, and additionally reproduces the relational characteristics of Mach's principle without invoking external boundaries. A new concept for in-space propulsion is proposed in which propellant is not ejected from the engine, but instead is captured to create a nearly infinite specific impulse. The engine accelerates ions confined in a closed loop to relativistic speeds, and slightly varies their velocity to change their momentum. The engine then moves the ions back and forth along the direction of travel to produce thrust. This in-space engine is intended to be used for long-term satellite station-keeping without refueling or to propel spacecraft across interstellar distances. At Z-Library, our mission is to make knowledge accessible to everyone, everywhere. However, we understand that sometimes our main domains may be unavailable due to technical issues or access restrictions in certain countries. How to Add Your Own Mirror Website?
Follow these steps to create your Z-Library mirror:
1. Register Your Domain: Choose any registrar you prefer. Your domain shouldn't contain the words "zlib", "zlibrary", "z-lib", "z-library", or "official".
2. Add Your Domain: Go to special "Mirror Page" and use the “Add domain” button (note: only second-level domains are allowed).
3. Configure DNS: Go to your domain settings and specify the NS servers, which will be displayed next to your added domain.
4. Wait for DNS Propagation: After updating DNS information (usually a few hours, sometimes up to 24 hours), our website will open on your domain.
