ABSTRACT -- A new theory, describing both light and material particles, is proposed. The experimentally-observed nature of space and time are brought into the theory at the most fundamental level. An equation encompassing the usual free-space Maxwell equations but similar in form to the Dirac equation is proposed. This equation has new kinds of solutions. Propagating, pure-field solutions may have any energy, but the energy transferred must be proportional to the frequency. These are identified with the physical photon. Solutions with a rest-mass term allow any incoming propagating field to merge into re-circulating vortex-like solutions. The minimum energy configuration “rectifies” the oscillating electric field of light into a uni-directional, radial (inward or outward directed) configuration. The resulting apparent external charge may be readily estimated and is found to be of the order of the elementary charge. The spin may, likewise, be calculated, and is found to be half integral, exhibiting a double-covering internal symmetry. Charge is then not a fundamental quantity in the theory - but is a result of the way field folds from a rest-massless bosonic to a rest-massive fermionic configuration. The simplest such charged, fermionic particles are identified with the electron and positron.

Discovery and Implications of a Nanoscale Rare Earth Mineral in a Hyperaccumulator Plant

Here, we report the discovery of naturally formed nanoscale monazite in the fern Blechnum orientale, a REE hyperaccumulator plant. These REE minerals crystallize within extracellular tissues under ambient conditions, forming dendritic nanocrystals through biologically induced mineralization coupled with a non-equilibrium self-organization process. This represents the novel discovery of REE mineral crystals formed in living plants through a phytomineralization (i.e., plant-mediated mineralization) process. Our findings uncover a previously unrecognized, plant-mediated pathway for critical mineral formation in a supergene environment. This discovery not only sheds light on REE enrichment and sequestration during chemical and biological weathering but also opens new possibilities for the direct recovery of functional REE materials...

Evidence of universal conformal invariance in living biological matter

Abstract -- The emergent dynamics of collective cellular movement are typically thought to depend on how cells interact with one another and the mechanisms used to drive motility, both of which exhibit remarkable diversity across different biological systems. Here we report experimental evidence of a universal feature in the patterns of flow that spontaneously emerge in groups of collectively moving cells. Specifically, we demonstrate that the flows generated by collectively moving dog kidney cells, human breast cancer cells and two different strains of pathogenic bacteria exhibit robust conformal invariance. We also show that the precise form of invariance in all four systems is described by the Schramm–Loewner evolution—a family of planar curves defined by a single parameter—and belongs to the percolation universality class. The presence of universal conformal invariance reveals that the macroscopic features of living biological matter exhibit universal translational, rotational and scale symmetries that are independent of the microscopic properties of its constituents. Our results show that flow patterns generated by different systems are highly conserved and that biological systems can be used to experimentally test predictions from the theories for conformally invariant structures.

How much time does a photon spend as an atomic excitation before being transmitted through a cloud of atoms?

When a single photon propagates through a cloud of two-level atoms, part of its energy is temporarily stored as a collective atomic excitation. This raises a fundamental question: is it possible to meaningfully quantify how long the photon spends in the form of an atomic excitation? If so, does this duration depend on whether the photon is ultimately transmitted through the cloud or scattered by the atoms? These questions motivated recent experimental work by some of us [Sinclair et al., PRX Quantum 3, 010314 (2022)], but until now there has been no theoretical prediction for these conditional durations. We answer these questions by extending the concept of a dwell time from quantum tunneling to light–matter interactions, introducing an experimentally measurable “atomic excitation time.” Using the weak-value formalism combined with quantum trajectory theory, we derive analytical expressions for this time conditioned on the photon being transmitted through the cloud or scattered into a side mode. We show that, for transmitted photons, this time is equal to the (spectrally averaged) group delay, even in regimes where the group delay is negative. For scattered photons, the time is given by the sum of an ensemble-averaged group delay and an always-positive Wigner time delay, well known in elastic scattering theory. Finally, we present a toy model that explains how such negative dwell times can arise as a result of quantum interference. This work provides new insight into the complex and surprising histories of photons traveling through absorptive media.

Ultrahigh Electrical Conductivity of Graphene Embedded in Metals

Abstract -- Highly efficient conductors are strongly desired because they can lead to higher working performance and less energy consumption in their wide range applications. However, the improvements on the electrical conductivities of conventional conductors are limited, such as purification and growing single crystal of metals. Here, by embedding graphene in metals (Cu, Al, and Ag), the trade-off between carrier mobility and carrier density is surmount in graphene, and realize high electron mobility and high electron density simultaneously through elaborate interface design and morphology control. As a result, a maximum electrical conductivity three orders of magnitude higher than the highest on record (more than 3,000 times higher than that of Cu) is obtained in such embedded graphene. As a result, using the graphene as reinforcement, an electrical conductivity as high as ≈117% of the International Annealed Copper Standard and significantly higher than that of Ag is achieved in bulk graphene/Cu composites with an extremely low graphene volume fraction of only 0.008%. The results are of significance when enhancing efficiency and saving energy in electrical and electronic applications of metals, and also of interest for fundamental researches on electron behaviors in graphene.

Mechanical Demonstration of Inertia by Francis McCabe // Math Easy Solutions
A video by the late Francis McCabe demonstrating that a group of randomly orientated gyroscopes will automatically align themselves in the direction of an applied torque. McCabe constructed a machine with 4 gyro horizons from World War 2 (WW2) planes fixed to an assembly that is free to rotate manually via a crank. A gyro horizon is an instrument used to measure an aircraft's orientation relative to the Earth's horizon. When McCabe starts the machine, the gyroscopes are spun up with air pressure and start oscillating and/or rotating (which McCabe describes as "motorization"). He notes that their is a self-developed frequency of oscillation and motorization. Then he applies an external torque by rotating the crank and immediately all the gyroscope line up! He notes that the force is felt only initially as the gyros are lining up and then the machines starts "coasting". This machine demonstrates what may well be the first mechanical rendition of inertia, which is a mass' resistance to change or acceleration. The gyros can be considered as tiny atoms, and the inertia that an object possesses is related to how many atoms need to reorient themselves in the direction of applied motion. Interestingly, this gyro assembly is also a good illustration of magnetism, since an externally applied magnetic field causes many tiny magnets to reorient themselves in the applied magnetic field direction. Are atoms and magnets just tiny gyroscopes? gyroscopes of the Aether? I think so!

This paper describes over 20 demonstration motion force specimens. These would be systems for traveling gyro-dynamic, torque-based generating force motion that apparently replicates the atomic mechanics of the electron energy torus; and other mass transfer phenomenon which also demonstrate a possible mechanical motion explanation for inertia. First, the paper will discuss the problems in discovery of how ÈinertiaŠ (and gravity) may have its basis in the inherent immediate reaction from gyro ÈwaveŠ (atomic / molecular) planar disturbances -- (any multiples of angular rotation of the mass spin plane). This generated torque force field could be a summation / synthesis of ÈgyroscopicŠreactions. These reactions appear to be based on the plane of stability (or force) associated with a mass arc travel. Axial rotation of the plane of rotation sets up a torque system linked to precession. ÈNaturalŠ precession always starts with an orbital ÈbumpingŠwhich manifests as a cyclic settlement into handling torsion loadings on the original (angular displacement) beam. The ÈbumpingŠhas been observed in gyroscopic initial precession reaction; and has been seen as an obstruction to the smooth major arc displacement energy transfer into precessional motion / torque. Appropriately powered precession is necessary for vortex energy and propulsion; and can obscure the ÈbumpingŠ. During the time that the origin torque is passing through the (up to ½ turn) pre-alignment period, there is an opposition to acceleration of the system (mass) that is a definitively ratioed correlation displayed by the devices arc rates. This and the ÈbumpŠ (which actually may be a cyclic basis for a continuous power / motion) ? ý can be the re-incryption of the DNA spiral and can also be sub-atomic in its application bases. When many gyro particles are in a structure and, of course, at random positions, the sum of the precessional motion becomes ÈinertiaŠ. When the period is powered at a rate faster than the natural gyro resistance (e.g. to a gravity handling stability) relativity then various torque based power and spiral motion becomes available. ... the late Francis J. McCabe’s amazing Gyro Wheel Torque “Over-Unity” demonstration, which he had up on his YouTube Channel in June 27, 2012. Francis showed that a large 50 pound, 32 inch diameter gyro, precessing from about 25 inches from the pivot point, can still be “torqued-up” by a very small and visibly weak 6 volt battery with a “Torque Rating” of 2.5 inch-pounds at 12 volts.
Crunching in the numbers, we get roughly:
Output Torque = 50 pounds * 25 inches = 50 * 25 = 1,250 inch-pounds
Input Torque = 2.5 inch-pounds * (6 volts input) / (12 volts rating) = 1.25 inch-pounds.
Output Torque / Input Torque = 1250/1.25 = 1000 TIMES OVER-UNITY!
Recall that the mainstream definition of “Torque” is essentially force multiplied by the distance perpendicular from the fulcrum or point of rotation. For a fixed horizontal wheel, the torque would be the “Moment of Inertia” multiplied by the Acceleration. But while precessing, this torque is also equal to the weight multiplied by the distance to the pivot... Essentially what this means is that although a very weak motor won’t be able to spin a fixed horizontal heavy wheel, but if spun initially through the vertical near zero torque position and then allowed to precess, the motor magically is able to increase spin speed and maintain precession! This is literally as if the very magical act of precession is causing the gyroscope to be “lifted” in a horizontal spiral plane. Later Francis turns off the power and the gyro-wheel begins precessing in a downwards spiral. This is an absolutely mind-boggling demonstration by Francis J. McCabe, and just adds to amazing properties of gyroscopes shown in my earlier experiments.

Abstract -- Sodium vanadate hydrate (NaV3O8·xH2O, NVOH) exhibits a wider interlayer spacing than its anhydrous form (NaV3O8, NVO), allowing a greater volume for sodium intercalation and, consequently, a higher specific capacity in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the presence of H2O hinders the long-term cycling stability of the material in an organic medium, whereas its application in aqueous media has received significant attention. In this work, the hydrothermal synthesis of NVO is optimised to maximise both sodium and crystalline water content, thereby enhancing battery performance in both organic cells and aqueous desalination cells. When tested within organic half-cells, the optimised structure provided an exceptional specific capacity of 280 mA h g−1 at 10 mA g−1 and demonstrated cycling stability (150 cycles, > 100 mA h g−1, 100 mA g−1). The performance of this material was confirmed in a full sodium ion battery (SIB) with a C@V2O3 counter electrode, yielding 70 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1. This optimised structure was then measured in a new platform designed to provide low-cost high-throughput three-electrode electrochemical testing. Using NaCl(aq) as the electrolyte verified promise of NVOH for desalination batteries as a sodium extraction anode, showing a high estimated desalination capacity of 173 mgNaCl g−1.

Abstract -- Reducing human reliance on high-electricity-consuming cooling technologies like air conditioning is crucial for reshaping the global energy paradigm. Through utilizing natural starch gelatinization, freeze-drying and densification processes, we fabricated an ultrawhite cooling starch film with an ultrahigh solar reflectance of 0.96 and strong infrared emittance of 0.94. The porous structure of the cooling starch film, systematically controlled by the mechanical pressing processing, allows for effective scattering of solar radiation while emitting strongly during the atmospheric transparency window, thereby contributing to high-efficiency daytime radiative cooling capacity. Furthermore, the cooling starch film exhibits excellent mechanical tensile strength, measuring at up to 38.5 megapascals, which is more than twice the strength of natural wood. The ultrawhite radiative cooling starch film holds significant promise for optimizing cooling energy usage, especially in hot and arid climates.

Propagating, pure-field solutions may have any energy, but the energy transferred must be proportional to the frequency. These are identified with the physical photon. Evidence of universal conformal invariance in living biological matter

Abstract -- The emergent dynamics of collective cellular movement are typically thought to depend on how cells interact with one another and the mechanisms used to drive motility, both of which exhibit remarkable diversity across different biological systems. Here we report experimental evidence of a universal feature in the patterns of flow that spontaneously emerge in groups of collectively moving cells. Specifically, we demonstrate that the flows generated by collectively moving dog kidney cells, human breast cancer cells and two different strains of pathogenic bacteria exhibit robust conformal invariance. We also show that the precise form of invariance in all four systems is described by the Schramm–Loewner evolution—a family of planar curves defined by a single parameter—and belongs to the percolation universality class. The presence of universal conformal invariance reveals that the macroscopic features of living biological matter exhibit universal translational, rotational and scale symmetries that are independent of the microscopic properties of its constituents. Our results show that flow patterns generated by different systems are highly conserved and that biological systems can be used to experimentally test predictions from the theories for conformally invariant structures.

When a single photon propagates through a cloud of two-level atoms, part of its energy is temporarily stored as a collective atomic excitation. This raises a fundamental question: is it possible to meaningfully quantify how long the photon spends in the form of an atomic excitation? If so, does this duration depend on whether the photon is ultimately transmitted through the cloud or scattered by the atoms? These questions motivated recent experimental work by some of us [Sinclair et al., PRX Quantum 3, 010314 (2022)], but until now there has been no theoretical prediction for these conditional durations. We answer these questions by extending the concept of a dwell time from quantum tunneling to light–matter interactions, introducing an experimentally measurable “atomic excitation time.” Using the weak-value formalism combined with quantum trajectory theory, we derive analytical expressions for this time conditioned on the photon being transmitted through the cloud or scattered into a side mode. We show that, for transmitted photons, this time is equal to the (spectrally averaged) group delay, even in regimes where the group delay is negative. For scattered photons, the time is given by the sum of an ensemble-averaged group delay and an always-positive Wigner time delay, well known in elastic scattering theory. Finally, we present a toy model that explains how such negative dwell times can arise as a result of quantum interference. This work provides new insight into the complex and surprising histories of photons traveling through absorptive media.

Ultrahigh Electrical Conductivity of Graphene Embedded in Metals

Abstract -- Highly efficient conductors are strongly desired because they can lead to higher working performance and less energy consumption in their wide range applications. However, the improvements on the electrical conductivities of conventional conductors are limited, such as purification and growing single crystal of metals. Here, by embedding graphene in metals (Cu, Al, and Ag), the trade-off between carrier mobility and carrier density is surmount in graphene, and realize high electron mobility and high electron density simultaneously through elaborate interface design and morphology control. As a result, a maximum electrical conductivity three orders of magnitude higher than the highest on record (more than 3,000 times higher than that of Cu) is obtained in such embedded graphene. As a result, using the graphene as reinforcement, an electrical conductivity as high as ≈117% of the International Annealed Copper Standard and significantly higher than that of Ag is achieved in bulk graphene/Cu composites with an extremely low graphene volume fraction of only 0.008%. The results are of significance when enhancing efficiency and saving energy in electrical and electronic applications of metals, and also of interest for fundamental researches on electron behaviors in graphene.

A video by the late Francis McCabe demonstrating that a group of randomly orientated gyroscopes will automatically align themselves in the direction of an applied torque. McCabe constructed a machine with 4 gyro horizons from World War 2 (WW2) planes fixed to an assembly that is free to rotate manually via a crank. A gyro horizon is an instrument used to measure an aircraft's orientation relative to the Earth's horizon. When McCabe starts the machine, the gyroscopes are spun up with air pressure and start oscillating and/or rotating (which McCabe describes as "motorization"). He notes that their is a self-developed frequency of oscillation and motorization. Then he applies an external torque by rotating the crank and immediately all the gyroscope line up! He notes that the force is felt only initially as the gyros are lining up and then the machines starts "coasting". This machine demonstrates what may well be the first mechanical rendition of inertia, which is a mass' resistance to change or acceleration. The gyros can be considered as tiny atoms, and the inertia that an object possesses is related to how many atoms need to reorient themselves in the direction of applied motion. Interestingly, this gyro assembly is also a good illustration of magnetism, since an externally applied magnetic field causes many tiny magnets to reorient themselves in the applied magnetic field direction. This paper describes over 20 demonstration motion force specimens. These would be systems for traveling gyro-dynamic, torque-based generating force motion that apparently replicates the atomic mechanics of the electron energy torus; and other mass transfer phenomenon which also demonstrate a possible mechanical motion explanation for inertia. First, the paper will discuss the problems in discovery of how ÈinertiaŠ (and gravity) may have its basis in the inherent immediate reaction from gyro ÈwaveŠ (atomic / molecular) planar disturbances -- (any multiples of angular rotation of the mass spin plane). This generated torque force field could be a summation / synthesis of ÈgyroscopicŠreactions. These reactions appear to be based on the plane of stability (or force) associated with a mass arc travel. Axial rotation of the plane of rotation sets up a torque system linked to precession. Francis showed that a large 50 pound, 32 inch diameter gyro, precessing from about 25 inches from the pivot point, can still be “torqued-up” by a very small and visibly weak 6 volt battery with a “Torque Rating” of 2.5 inch-pounds at 12 volts.
Crunching in the numbers, we get roughly:

For a fixed horizontal wheel, the torque would be the “Moment of Inertia” multiplied by the Acceleration. But while precessing, this torque is also equal to the weight multiplied by the distance to the pivot... Essentially what this means is that although a very weak motor won’t be able to spin a fixed horizontal heavy wheel, but if spun initially through the vertical near zero torque position and then allowed to precess, the motor magically is able to increase spin speed and maintain precession! This is literally as if the very magical act of precession is causing the gyroscope to be “lifted” in a horizontal spiral plane. Later Francis turns off the power and the gyro-wheel begins precessing in a downwards spiral. This is an absolutely mind-boggling demonstration by Francis J. McCabe, and just adds to amazing properties of gyroscopes shown in my earlier experiments.

Abstract -- Sodium vanadate hydrate (NaV3O8·xH2O, NVOH) exhibits a wider interlayer spacing than its anhydrous form (NaV3O8, NVO), allowing a greater volume for sodium intercalation and, consequently, a higher specific capacity in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the presence of H2O hinders the long-term cycling stability of the material in an organic medium, whereas its application in aqueous media has received significant attention. In this work, the hydrothermal synthesis of NVO is optimised to maximise both sodium and crystalline water content, thereby enhancing battery performance in both organic cells and aqueous desalination cells. When tested within organic half-cells, the optimised structure provided an exceptional specific capacity of 280 mA h g−1 at 10 mA g−1 and demonstrated cycling stability (150 cycles, > 100 mA h g−1, 100 mA g−1). The performance of this material was confirmed in a full sodium ion battery (SIB) with a C@V2O3 counter electrode, yielding 70 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1. This optimised structure was then measured in a new platform designed to provide low-cost high-throughput three-electrode electrochemical testing. Using NaCl(aq) as the electrolyte verified promise of NVOH for desalination batteries as a sodium extraction anode, showing a high estimated desalination capacity of 173 mgNaCl g−1.

Abstract -- Reducing human reliance on high-electricity-consuming cooling technologies like air conditioning is crucial for reshaping the global energy paradigm. Through utilizing natural starch gelatinization, freeze-drying and densification processes, we fabricated an ultrawhite cooling starch film with an ultrahigh solar reflectance of 0.96 and strong infrared emittance of 0.94. The porous structure of the cooling starch film, systematically controlled by the mechanical pressing processing, allows for effective scattering of solar radiation while emitting strongly during the atmospheric transparency window, thereby contributing to high-efficiency daytime radiative cooling capacity. Furthermore, the cooling starch film exhibits excellent mechanical tensile strength, measuring at up to 38.5 megapascals, which is more than twice the strength of natural wood. The ultrawhite radiative cooling starch film holds significant promise for optimizing cooling energy usage, especially in hot and arid climates.
