The remarkable floating ability comes from stable air trapped inside the tube. Besides being able to float back to the surface even after being fully forced into water, the SH tube can also maintain buoyancy under severe tilting, water impact, and even under severe structural damage. The SH tubes assembly can be used to construct large vessels, watercrafts, floating platforms, and buoys for marine applications. A breakthrough that could make ships nearly unsinkable
More than a century after the Titanic, the dream of unsinkable ships is still alive, and scientists may be closer than ever.Researchers have found a way to make ordinary aluminum tubes float indefinitely, even when submerged for long periods or punched full of holes. By engineering the metal’s surface to repel water, the tubes trap air inside and refuse to sink, even in rough conditions. The technology could eventually be scaled up into floating platforms, ships, or even wave-powered energy systems...
The work was led by Chunlei Guo, a professor of optics and physics and a senior scientist at URochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics. Guo and his colleagues detailed the new method in a study published in Advanced Functional Materials. Their approach focuses on modifying the inside surface of aluminum tubes by etching it to create microscopic and nanoscale pits. This textured surface becomes superhydrophobic, allowing it to strongly repel water and remain dry.

...Chunlei Guo, a professor of optics and physics and senior scientist at URochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics, and his team describe their process for creating aluminum tubes with remarkable floating abilities in a study published in Advanced Functional Materials. By etching the interior of aluminum tubes, the researchers create micro- and nano-pits on the surface that turns it superhydrophobic, repelling water and staying dry.
When the treated tube enters water, the superhydrophobic surface traps a stable bubble of air inside the tube and prevents the tube from getting waterlogged and sinking, in a similar way that diving bell spiders trap an air bubble to stay buoyant underwater or fire ants to form floating rafts with their hydrophobic bodies.
“Importantly, we added a divider to the middle of the tube so that even if you push it vertically into the water, the bubble of air remains trapped inside and the tube retains its floating ability,” says Guo.
Guo and his lab first demonstrated superhydrophobic floating devices in 2019, featuring two superhydrophobic disks that were sealed together to create their buoyancy. But the current tube design simplifies and improves the technology in several key areas. The disks that the researchers previously developed could lose their ability to float when turned at extreme angles, but the tubes are resilient against turbulent conditions like those found at sea.
“We tested them in some really rough environments for weeks at a time and found no degradation to their buoyancy,” says Guo. “You can poke big holes in them, and we showed that even if you severely damage the tubes with as many holes as you can punch, they still float.”
Multiple tubes can be linked together to create rafts that could be the basis for ships, buoys, and floating platforms. In lab experiments, the team tested the design using tubes of varying lengths, up to almost half a meter, and Guo says the technology could be easily scaled to the larger sizes needed for load-bearing floating devices.
The researchers also showed how rafts made from superhydrophobic tubes could be used to harvest water waves to generate electricity, offering a promising renewable energy application.

Studies at MIT and elsewhere are producing mounting evidence that light flickering and sound clicking at the gamma brain rhythm frequency of 40 hertz can reduce Alzheimer’s disease (AD) progression and treat symptoms in human volunteers as well as lab mice.
Why 40 Hz? Light and sound sensory gamma stimulation increases 40Hz power and synchrony in the brains of mice, that prompts a particular type of neuron to release peptides. These short peptide protein signals drive specific neuronal processes that promote increased amyloid and tau clearance via the glymphatic system. Because amyloid and tau protein buildup in the brain is one of the main findings in Alzheimer's dementia, reducing such "toxic" protein buildup is thought to possibly decrease risk for dementia development and potentially even treat it.

engineers from UIUC, in collaboration with US-based manufacturing company Fabric8Labs, devised a novel direct-to-chip cooling system composed of copper plates that attach to computer chips.
These plates have 'fins,' or projections that protrude to increase contact with the circulating coolant and enhance heat transfer efficiency.
While conventional cold plates often employ fins in simple shapes such as rectangles or cones, the fins designed here have jagged edges and pointy tips to increase surface area...
The researchers used a technique called topology optimization to design more efficient heat-moving shapes. This technique begins with a basic rectangle and then uses a mathematical algorithm to alter its form through multiple iterations...
Its cooling properties, and how much energy is required to push fluid through it, is calculated each time and honed through virtual trial-and-error.
This technique helps to alleviate the thermal-hydraulic trade-off issue. Improved fins reduce pressure drop, decreasing the power required to pump cooling fluids through the structure.
"Topology optimization ends up converging on a design which is optimal in maximizing thermal performance and minimizing pumping power," explains Nenad Miljkovic, mechanical engineer at UIUC.
Yet this design presents another problem: intricately shaped fins are harder to manufacture. Similarly, the multi-functional metal copper has favorable thermal conductivity but doesn't lend itself particularly well to fabrication methods such as conventional 3D printing.
As a result, previous cold plate designs have been made of aluminum alloy or stainless steel, which exhibit less favorable thermal properties... the researchers partnered with the fabrication firm Fabric8Labs, based in San Diego, to create the copper cold plates using an emerging technique called electrochemical additive manufacturing (ECAM).
In contrast to subtractive manufacturing, which whittles materials down into their desired shapes, additive manufacturing (such as 3D printing) builds them up by laying down successive layers of material.
Rather than melting copper, ECAM employs electrochemical plating to construct the copper plates layer by layer.
"ECAM can manufacture pure copper parts with very fine detail – down to 30 to 50 micrometers, less than the width of a human hair," says Miljkovic.
The resultant pure copper plates, with their pointy, jagged fins, provide a solution to two of the significant issues mentioned above, the researchers say.
First, they could deliver up to 32 percent better cooling than conventional plates with simple rectangular fins. Second, they could reduce pressure drop by up to 68 percent while offering the same level of cooling.
The researchers also estimate that incorporating this cold plate technology across an entire "high-density, next-generation" data center could cut its cooling costs to just 1.1 percent of total energy use.
For comparison, conventional air-cooling methods currently account for around 30 percent of a data center's energy use.

I've featured a few of these devices in the past. All in the same case and being pushed on eBay, amazon, and all the other unregulated platforms during times of fuel poverty. It appears the recent greed-driven political idiocracy has caused another push of these devices onto the market to cash in on the fact that people are struggling financially.
There are genuine engine-tuning devices available, but they are for specific cars and carry a high price tag to cover the development costs.
These units claim to work with ANY car and "remap" the engine's parameters to boost performance while saving fuel. (That would be a massive software feat.) In reality they do NOTHING but waste power and blink lights.
Some make an effort to look convincing by blinking the lights in a way that looks like bidirectional data communication, but others like this just flash an LED on and off to look like they are doing something. This particular unit is especially disappointing because it uses a microcontroller with full control over the three LEDs and could have looked so much more convincing with better software.
The button in these units has two purposes. Firstly it gives an element of interaction, making the user think they have started the vehicle learning sequence.
The second purpose is probably to facilitate fobbing customers off until they lose interest or are beyond the point they can open a dispute with the seller.
The instructions with these units often imply that a minimum mileage or time is required for the device to learn and adjust the engine for maximum economy. If the customer then complains that there's no difference then they can ask if they pressed the button or suggest holding it in for ten seconds and then start the whole minimum mileage thing again.
A subsequent test with an external resistor and supply showed that the zener diode is a 5.1V one, and the lower voltage readings were because the dropper resistor isn't passing enough current for the LEDs, so they drag the voltage down.
The cost of these units varies dramatically, with the price starting at less than £2 on Aliexpress with no upper limit on eBay and amazon as the scammers either try to gouge as much money as possible, or use a high price to create the illusion of value. (Like the fashion industry.)
Any positive reviews of these devices are either fake or from people who have bought one and then convinced themselves that it's doing something with the placebo effect.

Abstract -- Aging is closely associated with oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, chronic inflammation, and progressive declines in muscle and cognitive function. Exercise is widely recognized as the most effective non-pharmacological strategy to counteract these processes; however, its benefits may be potentiated by targeted nutritional interventions. Glycine and N-acetylcysteine (NAC), both precursors of the antioxidant glutathione, have emerged as promising candidates for maintaining redox balance, supporting mitochondrial metabolism, and improving physiological resilience in older adults. Evidence on NAC suggests context-dependent effects, with supplementation improving glutathione availability, fatigue resistance, and exercise performance in individuals with low baseline glutathione, while results remain inconsistent in healthy populations. Glycine and its derivatives, such as glycine propionyl-L-carnitine, show potential to enhance anaerobic performance and reduce lactate accumulation, though findings are mixed and require confirmation in older cohorts. Increasingly, studies on combined glycine and NAC supplementation (GlyNAC) provide compelling proof-of-concept: clinical and preclinical trials demonstrate improvements in oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, insulin resistance, inflammation, muscle strength, cognition, and even lifespan extension in animal models. These results suggest that GlyNAC, especially when paired with exercise, may represent a novel paradigm to mitigate aging hallmarks and extend healthspan.

Effectiveness of Stevia Rebaudiana Whole Leaf Extract Against the Various Morphological Forms of Borrelia Burgdorferi in Vitro

Abstract -- Lyme disease is a tick-borne multisystemic disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi. Administering antibiotics is the primary treatment for this disease; however, relapse often occurs when antibiotic treatment is discontinued. The reason for relapse remains unknown, but recent studies suggested the possibilities of the presence of antibiotic resistant Borrelia persister cells and biofilms. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of whole leaf Stevia extract against B. burgdorferi spirochetes, persisters, and biofilm forms in vitro. The susceptibility of the different forms was evaluated by various quantitative techniques in addition to different microscopy methods. The effectiveness of Stevia was compared to doxycycline, cefoperazone, daptomycin, and their combinations. Our results demonstrated that Stevia had significant effect in eliminating B. burgdorferi spirochetes and persisters. Subculture experiments with Stevia and antibiotics treated cells were established for 7 and 14 days yielding, no and 10% viable cells, respectively compared to the above-mentioned antibiotics and antibiotic combination. When Stevia and the three antibiotics were tested against attached biofilms, Stevia significantly reduced B. burgdorferi forms. Results from this study suggest that a natural product such as Stevia leaf extract could be considered as an effective agent against B. burgdorferi.

Spodumene rock is essentially made of three things: lithium, aluminum, and silica. Silica bonds are tough; hence, standard mining tries to dissolve everything else first. Chiang’s team used a liquid reagent made of water and ammonium fluoride — the active chemical in glass etchant — to do the exact opposite. They dissolved the silica first.
The results were immediate. The rock dissolved smoothly at room temperature. No extreme heat required.
From there, the team pioneered what they call “nose-to-tail mining.” The entire rock was transformed into high-value commodities through precise separation of dissolved elements. The SH tubes assembly can be used to construct large vessels, watercrafts, floating platforms, and buoys for marine applications. When the treated tube enters water, the superhydrophobic surface traps a stable bubble of air inside the tube and prevents the tube from getting waterlogged and sinking, in a similar way that diving bell spiders trap an air bubble to stay buoyant underwater or fire ants to form floating rafts with their hydrophobic bodies.
“Importantly, we added a divider to the middle of the tube so that even if you push it vertically into the water, the bubble of air remains trapped inside and the tube retains its floating ability,” says Guo.
Guo and his lab first demonstrated superhydrophobic floating devices in 2019, featuring two superhydrophobic disks that were sealed together to create their buoyancy. But the current tube design simplifies and improves the technology in several key areas. The disks that the researchers previously developed could lose their ability to float when turned at extreme angles, but the tubes are resilient against turbulent conditions like those found at sea.
“We tested them in some really rough environments for weeks at a time and found no degradation to their buoyancy,” says Guo. “You can poke big holes in them, and we showed that even if you severely damage the tubes with as many holes as you can punch, they still float.”
Multiple tubes can be linked together to create rafts that could be the basis for ships, buoys, and floating platforms. In lab experiments, the team tested the design using tubes of varying lengths, up to almost half a meter, and Guo says the technology could be easily scaled to the larger sizes needed for load-bearing floating devices.
The researchers also showed how rafts made from superhydrophobic tubes could be used to harvest water waves to generate electricity, offering a promising renewable energy application.

engineers from UIUC, in collaboration with US-based manufacturing company Fabric8Labs, devised a novel direct-to-chip cooling system composed of copper plates that attach to computer chips.
These plates have 'fins,' or projections that protrude to increase contact with the circulating coolant and enhance heat transfer efficiency.
While conventional cold plates often employ fins in simple shapes such as rectangles or cones, the fins designed here have jagged edges and pointy tips to increase surface area...
The researchers used a technique called topology optimization to design more efficient heat-moving shapes. This technique begins with a basic rectangle and then uses a mathematical algorithm to alter its form through multiple iterations...
Its cooling properties, and how much energy is required to push fluid through it, is calculated each time and honed through virtual trial-and-error.
This technique helps to alleviate the thermal-hydraulic trade-off issue. Improved fins reduce pressure drop, decreasing the power required to pump cooling fluids through the structure.
"Topology optimization ends up converging on a design which is optimal in maximizing thermal performance and minimizing pumping power," explains Nenad Miljkovic, mechanical engineer at UIUC.
Yet this design presents another problem: intricately shaped fins are harder to manufacture. Similarly, the multi-functional metal copper has favorable thermal conductivity but doesn't lend itself particularly well to fabrication methods such as conventional 3D printing.
As a result, previous cold plate designs have been made of aluminum alloy or stainless steel, which exhibit less favorable thermal properties... the researchers partnered with the fabrication firm Fabric8Labs, based in San Diego, to create the copper cold plates using an emerging technique called electrochemical additive manufacturing (ECAM).
In contrast to subtractive manufacturing, which whittles materials down into their desired shapes, additive manufacturing (such as 3D printing) builds them up by laying down successive layers of material.
Rather than melting copper, ECAM employs electrochemical plating to construct the copper plates layer by layer.
"ECAM can manufacture pure copper parts with very fine detail – down to 30 to 50 micrometers, less than the width of a human hair," says Miljkovic.
The resultant pure copper plates, with their pointy, jagged fins, provide a solution to two of the significant issues mentioned above, the researchers say.
First, they could deliver up to 32 percent better cooling than conventional plates with simple rectangular fins. Second, they could reduce pressure drop by up to 68 percent while offering the same level of cooling.
The researchers also estimate that incorporating this cold plate technology across an entire "high-density, next-generation" data center could cut its cooling costs to just 1.1 percent of total energy use.
For comparison, conventional air-cooling methods currently account for around 30 percent of a data center's energy use.

I've featured a few of these devices in the past. All in the same case and being pushed on eBay, amazon, and all the other unregulated platforms during times of fuel poverty. It appears the recent greed-driven political idiocracy has caused another push of these devices onto the market to cash in on the fact that people are struggling financially.
There are genuine engine-tuning devices available, but they are for specific cars and carry a high price tag to cover the development costs.
These units claim to work with ANY car and "remap" the engine's parameters to boost performance while saving fuel. (That would be a massive software feat.) In reality they do NOTHING but waste power and blink lights.
Some make an effort to look convincing by blinking the lights in a way that looks like bidirectional data communication, but others like this just flash an LED on and off to look like they are doing something. This particular unit is especially disappointing because it uses a microcontroller with full control over the three LEDs and could have looked so much more convincing with better software.
The button in these units has two purposes. Firstly it gives an element of interaction, making the user think they have started the vehicle learning sequence.
The second purpose is probably to facilitate fobbing customers off until they lose interest or are beyond the point they can open a dispute with the seller.
The instructions with these units often imply that a minimum mileage or time is required for the device to learn and adjust the engine for maximum economy. If the customer then complains that there's no difference then they can ask if they pressed the button or suggest holding it in for ten seconds and then start the whole minimum mileage thing again.
A subsequent test with an external resistor and supply showed that the zener diode is a 5.1V one, and the lower voltage readings were because the dropper resistor isn't passing enough current for the LEDs, so they drag the voltage down.
The cost of these units varies dramatically, with the price starting at less than £2 on Aliexpress with no upper limit on eBay and amazon as the scammers either try to gouge as much money as possible, or use a high price to create the illusion of value. (Like the fashion industry.)
Any positive reviews of these devices are either fake or from people who have bought one and then convinced themselves that it's doing something with the placebo effect.

Effectiveness of Stevia Rebaudiana Whole Leaf Extract Against the Various Morphological Forms of Borrelia Burgdorferi in Vitro

Abstract -- Lyme disease is a tick-borne multisystemic disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi. Administering antibiotics is the primary treatment for this disease; however, relapse often occurs when antibiotic treatment is discontinued. The reason for relapse remains unknown, but recent studies suggested the possibilities of the presence of antibiotic resistant Borrelia persister cells and biofilms. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of whole leaf Stevia extract against B. burgdorferi spirochetes, persisters, and biofilm forms in vitro. The susceptibility of the different forms was evaluated by various quantitative techniques in addition to different microscopy methods. The effectiveness of Stevia was compared to doxycycline, cefoperazone, daptomycin, and their combinations. Our results demonstrated that Stevia had significant effect in eliminating B. burgdorferi spirochetes and persisters. Subculture experiments with Stevia and antibiotics treated cells were established for 7 and 14 days yielding, no and 10% viable cells, respectively compared to the above-mentioned antibiotics and antibiotic combination. When Stevia and the three antibiotics were tested against attached biofilms, Stevia significantly reduced B. burgdorferi forms. Results from this study suggest that a natural product such as Stevia leaf extract could be considered as an effective agent against B. burgdorferi.

Spodumene rock is essentially made of three things: lithium, aluminum, and silica. Silica bonds are tough; hence, standard mining tries to dissolve everything else first. Chiang’s team used a liquid reagent made of water and ammonium fluoride — the active chemical in glass etchant — to do the exact opposite. They dissolved the silica first.
The results were immediate. The rock dissolved smoothly at room temperature. No extreme heat required.
From there, the team pioneered what they call “nose-to-tail mining.” The entire rock was transformed into high-value commodities through precise separation of dissolved elements. The recipe yields battery-grade lithium salts for electric-vehicle cathodes, smelter-grade alumina for aluminum production, and highly reactive silica perfectly suited for green cement
